Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey of two literary devices that are indispensable for understanding salvation history A biblical type is a person, place, or thing in salvation history that corresponds to a later person, place, or thing in the scriptural text. An allegory is a passage that says one thing in order to say something else. Both are common literary devices in the Bible that are vital for understanding truths about Jesus Christ found nowhere else. In 40 Questions About Typology and Allegory, Mitchell Chase provides a thorough introduction to both devices, showing where they appear throughout Scripture and the historical roles they have played in biblical interpretation. In a convenient question-and-answer format, Chase answers key questions such as: • Why should interpreters care about typology and allegory? • How do we identify types? • What are the theological assumptions of typology? • Do all types lead to Christ? • What is allegorical interpretation? • How was allegory practiced in the early church? • How should we practice allegorical interpretation? Situating typology and allegory within salvation history, Chase shows how these devices reveal the interconnectedness of Scripture and commonly overlooked aspects of Christ's person and work. Scholars, Bible teachers, and preachers will find this an essential resource for interpreting Scripture more comprehensively.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, by an American Jesuit priest who completed doctoral studies under Jean Danielou at Paris, serves to present some of the highlights of the era of the fathers of the church - a period which begins with post-New Testament Christian writing and extends to about the end of the seventh century A.D. It is a survey of the era and an introduction to the context of the times in which the fathers thought and wrote and fought (not always without bloodshed) for the faith and way of life which was coming to be called Christian. In Father Barr's summary we feel the pulsing ebb and flow of the early history of Christianity, the history of the first impacts of the extraordinary gospel message, the good news, as it becomes embodied in and expressed by bishops and theologians through the critical early centuries. These far-away figures - men like Clement of Rome, Irenaeus, Tertullian, and Athanasius - take on familiar human form as the author sketches them in their milieu, showing them acting and reacting amid the various complex forces of their era. Cyprian of Carthage, puzzling over what to do with the apostate certificate bearers; Justin and Origen (in their fiery youth), Nestorius and his nemesis, Cyril of Alexandria (in their fiery prime); Augustine in the West and the golden age fathers in the East. These and other figures emerge as vigorous and sometimes colorful personalities in this lively mosaic of early Christian times.

Book excerpt: Why is it that a text, particularly a canonical text, is often said to contain a meaning different from what it literally says? How did allegorical readings arise and develop? By looking at such examples as Jewish and Christian interpretations of the Song of Songs and traditional Chinese commentaries on the Confucian classic Book of Poetry, Zhang Longxi discusses allegorical readings from a broad perspective that bridges the usual East/West cultural divide and examines their social and political implications. His approach is wide-ranging, cross-cultural, and cross-disciplinary, exploring allegoresis with regard to religion, philosophy, and literature. In his inquiry into allegory and allegorical interpretation, Zhang examines the idea of a self-explanatory text of the Bible as conceived by Augustine, Aquinas, and Luther; discusses the importance of the literal basis of textual interpretation; and takes up the question of moral responsibility and political allegiance. Zhang, who regards utopia as an allegory of social and political ideas, explores how utopian visions vary in their Chinese and Western expressions, in the process commenting on contemporary literary theory and political readings of literature past and present.

Esterson explores how Christian methods of biblical interpretation shifted during the eighteenth century, producing a rhetorical rejection of allegory while embracing literalism. Under the influence of Enlightenment concepts of human reason and advances in the experimental sciences, Christian interpreters began casting Jewish biblical interpretation as allegorical, while presenting Christian interpretation as literal. This shift in self-understanding allowed Christians to portray their own interpretations as scientifically, philosophically, and historically superior, resulting in a new way of othering the Jewish people. This study of biblical exegesis, theology, philosophy, and the arts in English, Swedish, and German contexts is an essential resource for scholars interested in biblical reception history and the history of Jewish-Christian relations.

Book excerpt: This book examines the discrepancies between various Western representations of China and the reality of China. It inquires into the cultural, historical, and political contexts within which such discrepancies arise, and it points out the distortion of reality in the tendency toward cultural dichotomies, the tendency to view China as the conceptual opposite of the West.
