Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Short fiction of biblical proportions—and bent—from the science fiction satirist and author of The Godhead Trilogy. James Morrow, “the most provocative satiric voice in science fiction,” unabashedly delves into matters both sacred and secular in this collection of short stories buoyed by his deliciously irreverent wit (The Washington Post). Among the dozen selections is the Nebula Award–winning story, “The Deluge,” in which a woman of ill repute is rescued by the crew of the ark, who must deal with the consequences of their misguided act of mercy. Also included is a follow-up to the Tower of Babel fable, an unprecedented nativity, and an attempt to stand so-called creation science on its head. Nothing is spared in a collection that “deliciously skewer[s] not only Judeo-Christian mythology but other sacred cows of modern society, from capitalism to New Age spiritualism” (Booklist). “Morrow’s is a blend of parody and commentary which challenges readers to reflect upon the human spiritual condition.” —Midwest Book Review

Book excerpt: Ever overhear a pre-teen or early teen conversation? It can be pretty dramatic -- in fact, young people and drama go together like... God and the Bible! If you're looking for quality material that draws middle school/junior high age young people into the scriptures, here's an invaluable resource. My Way Or Thy Way is a collection of twelve brief plays that bring familiar Bible stories to life in contemporary conversation that's easy to understand. By focusing on the choices made by the main characters -- and their consequences -- the scenes help young people make better choices in their own lives. "I want to do it my way, not thy way" was the struggle of these biblical personages, and many of us face similar issues today. Each skit lets participants "walk in the sandals" of ordinary people who faced extraordinary choices. Designed for versatility, these scenes can be given full dramatic performances with props, scenery, and costumes, or presented in readers' theater format for use as dynamic classroom discussion starters. Each drama is accompanied by questions and a variety of related activities. My Way Or Thy Way is an excellent supplement to a Sunday school, Bible school, or Bible study curriculum, and is especially useful for youth groups. These beautifully written skits are a perfect way for youth (and adults) to discover the teachings of the Bible. Pat Betteley has created a series of inventive and insightful pieces that encourage active participation from both performer and audience. What a great tool for a Sunday service or youth group meeting! Brint Learned Executive Director, Rabbit Run Community Arts Association Madison, Ohio In a world filled with choices, it's good to examine the choices of the "faith full." This book is filled with delectable skits and lots of ideas on how to use them in a variety of ways -- from the very theatrical to simple read-aloud discussion starters. The skits are filled with righteous puns and double entendres, putting a light touch on serious material. They make talking about making right choices fun and refreshing. Judy Astle Executive Director, Camp Henry Westminster Presbyterian Church Grand Rapids, Michigan Every Christian education director, children's coordinator, and Vacation Bible School director would benefit by having this collection. Richard Lehto Former District Superintendent, East Ohio Conference United Methodist Church Pat Betteley is a freelance writer with a passion for literature and drama. Book excerpt: This is a book of dramas, but the conversations of the actors make for good reading. So read it and enjoy it as a book of true stories or read it and pick your favorite story and present it in your church as a drama. Some of these dramas were written when i was in charge of drama productions at Millar College of the Bible. After school finished in the spring we would travel to about 15 churches and present them. Some of these dramas were written for a local church where I pastored. I usually worked with young people, but some older people, even retired people, had the courage to participate. This book is a book of reading dramas. The lines could be memorized like students did at Millar, but finding people who will do all that work for one production would be nearly impossible. Allowing people to participate while reading and with only one rehearsal is possible. No memorization would be required. The drama would involve the church people in an active way. Each page of the drama requires 1 to 2 minutes. Requirements of the drama leader; Be able to picture how the drama could be presented in your church setting. Select actors that are best suited to the part. Give out the scripts. Get a commitment to attend the rehearsal and presentation. Ask a capable person to become familiar with the drama who can fill in if sickness etc. leaves a hole. Organize a rehearsal and talk it through, walk it through. and then rehears it until the actors understand their part. The home church does not expect professional quality from its children, teens and adults, but do your best. They will love it even if it is not perfect. The main thing is that the characters of the Bible come alive as people watch people they know. There are videos and downloads that do a more professional job of portraying Scripture. That is good, but people sit passively and watch. In these dramas people are actively involved, living on the edge, but loving it. People thrive as they participate, and parents love to see their child or teenager portraying a Bible lesson.

Book excerpt: Sunday school children (grades 1-6) are fully capable of witnessing Biblical truths to mature audiences. "Singin' in the Reign" shows exactly how this was accomplished by Clark Tyler in his 21 years of teaching such children. The seven musical plays included in this volume are "instant productions," complete with scripts, stage directions, props lists and sheet music, taking into account the physical constraints of most small Christian churches.
