This book was released on 2012-07-01 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Minor Prophets are those dozen Old Testament books that, in the time of Jesus, were usually written on one scroll since they were all fairly brief. The late Elizabeth Achtemeier prepared the New International Biblical Commentary on the first six: Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, and Micah. This second volume deals with the final six books. John Goldingay writes on Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, and Haggai; Pamela Scalise takes on the longest, Zechariah, and the last, Malachi. Like the authors of other volumes in the NIBC, Goldingay and Scalise utilize what is referred to as "believing criticism" when examining the biblical texts. Based on fidelity to critical analysis and sensitivity to the faith of both ancient and contemporary readers, this balanced approach enriches both the academy and the church. Following the series guidelines, the authors clearly explain the texts with additional notes regarding interpretation and "practical" reflection. For example, Goldingay issues a reminder that when the prophets spoke against the arrogance and sins of Assyria and Babylon, the Israelites needed to hear the word of God as a caution against their own pride and wickedness. He goes on to suggest that modern readers must remember, as well, that the same attitudes and actions that led to the downfall of these ancient Middle East empires can fall upon any and all who follow their example. The New International Biblical Commentary offers the best of contemporary scholarship in a format that both general readers and serious students can use with profit. Based on the widely used New International Version translation, the NIBC presents careful section-by-section exposition with key terms and phrases highlighted and all Hebrew transliterated. A separate section of notes at the close of each chapter provides additional textual, linguistic, cultural, and technical comments. Each commentary also includes a selected bibliography as well as Scripture and subject indexes.

John Goldingay and Pamela Scalise have produced a commentary informed by sound scholarship that ably serves both the biblical text and its variety of readers. The prophets under consideration in this volume, Nahum through Malachi, present a host of interpretive difficulties. Goldingay and Scalise navigate those difficult passages with wisdom and interpretive modesty. They write lucidly, with contemporary readers of the Bible in mind, while consistently, expertly, guiding us through the complex world of the text and its details., Ben C. Ollenburger, Professor of Biblical Theology, Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary Goldingay and Scalise are seasoned, world-class scholars writing from a conservative-moderate viewpoint in a winsome, non-technical style, arguing cogently for their conclusions and covering a wide range of material succinctly. Any student, pastor, or scholar would enjoy owning this volume and would find much to interact with in every part.Douglas Stuart, Professor of Old Testament, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The writings of the prophets make up over a quarter of the Old Testament. But perhaps no other portion of the Old Testament is more misunderstood by readers today. For some, prophecy conjures up knotted enigmas, opaque oracles and terrifying visions of the future. For others it raises expectations of a plotted-out future to be reconstructed from disparate texts. And yet the prophets have imprinted the language of faith and imagination with some of its most sublime visions of the future - nations streaming to Zion, a lion lying with a lamb, and endlessly fruiting trees on the banks of a flowing river. We might view the prophets as stage directors for Israel's unfolding drama of redemption. Drawing inspiration from past acts in that drama and invoking fresh words from its divine author, these prophets speak a language of sinewed poetry, their words and images arresting the ear and detonating in the mind. For when Yahweh roars from Zion and thunders from Jerusalem, the pastures of the shepherds dry up, the crest of Carmel withers, and the prophetic word buffets those selling the needy for a pair of sandals. The Dictionary of the Old Testament: Prophets is the only reference book of its kind. Not only does it focus exclusively on the prophetic books; it also plumbs their imagery of mountains and wilderness, flora and fauna, temple and Zion. It maps and guides us through topics such as covenant and law, exile and deliverance, forgiveness and repentance, and the Day of the Lord. Here the nature of prophecy is searched out in its social, historical, literary and psychological dimensions as well as its synchronic spread of textual links and associations. And the formation of the prophetic books into their canonical collection, including the Book of the Twelve, is explored and weighed for its significance. Then too, contemporary approaches such as canonical criticism, conversation analysis, editorial/redaction criticism, feminist interpretation, literary approaches and rhetorical criticism are summed up and assayed. Even the afterlife of these great texts is explored in articles on the history of interpretation as well as on their impact in the New Testament.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Old Testament prophets were people who looked at the world and heard God speaking. They looked at the creation and felt God's power. They looked at pain and poverty and felt God's compassion. They looked at oppression, corruption and idolatry and felt God's anger. They looked at faithful believers and felt God's encouragement. They looked to the future and envisaged God's action. They knew doubt, discouragement and rejection but they stood firm because in looking at God's world they had sensed God's love. They were real people speaking into real situations in a world where people's behavior and reactions were, in spite of all the advances of modern technology, not so very different from our own. Mary Evans, who lectured in Old Testament Studies for many years, firmly believes that these people who spoke from God so many years ago are dynamically relevant in church and society today. This book helps you understand the prophets and appreciate their relevance.

Joan Cook captures the essence of these prophetic messages. She does so with an eye toward careful biblical scholarship: historical and political considerations, chronological timelines, and literary patterns. But Cook moves beyond the important scholarly study to consider how prophetic messages speak to the religious, pastoral, and socio-economic concerns of our time. Hear anew these prophetic messengers and discover the practical - and challenging - implications of their words for today."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God’s Love and Justice on Display What do we know about the date of Joel’s ministry? How do the warnings of Malachi relate to the Book of Revelation? How did Amos’s profession as a rancher influence his prophetic voice? Drawing on the research of internationally known Bible scholars, this detailed commentary looks at each verse of the final books of the Old Testament. The words of the minor prophets draw us closer to God by teaching us about His enduring love, His judgment to the unfaithful and mercy to the repentant, and His call to restoration for people who have suffered. Covering every book from Hosea through Malachi, this commentary shows the meaning behind these powerful prophecies while reminding us how ordinary people spoke extraordinary truth on behalf of a loving and just God.
