Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of the Polish tax system and policy which enriches knowledge of developments in one of the largest and most rapidly changing states in Europe. It is the result of cooperation of academics and practitioners from major tax advisory firms as well as in-house tax experts. Political changes in Poland (electoral victory of the right-wing PiS party) coincided with changes on the global tax scene, which were associated with the BEPS project (Base Erosion and Profit Shifting), implemented by the OECD. The struggle to rebuild countries' tax revenues began. The ambitious social policy in Poland, which involved substantial transfers of funds to the less well-off, required an increase in budget revenues. Thus, the Polish government quickly became an ardent supporter of BEPS. The radicalism of the tax policy changes raised many doubts among practitioners, who accused the authorities of excessive fiscalism. On the other hand, the legal rules previously in force did indeed poorly protect the fiscal interests of the state. The study of the Polish tax system and Polish tax policy based on the contributions collected in this volume enriches knowledge of developments in one of the largest and most rapidly changing states in Europe.

Book Synopsis Explaining Economic Backwardness by : Anna Sosnowska
Download or read book Explaining Economic Backwardness written by Anna Sosnowska and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-12 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is about an exciting episode in the intellectual history of Europe: the vigorous debate among leading Polish historians on the sources of the economic development and non-development, including the origins of economic divisions within Europe. The work covers nearly fifty years of this debate between the publication of two pivotal works in 1947 and 1994. Anna Sosnowska provides an insightful interpretation of how local and generational experience shaped the notions of post-1945 Polish historians about Eastern European backwardness, and how their debate influenced Western historical sociology, social theories of development and dependency in peripheral areas, and the image of Eastern Europe in Western, Marxist-inspired social science. Although created under the adverse conditions of state socialism and censorship, this body of scholarship had an important repercussion in international social science of the post-war period, contributing an emphasis on international comparisons, as well as a stress on social theory and explanations. Sosnowska's analysis also helps to understand current differences that lead to conflicts between Europe’s richest and economically most developed core and its southern and eastern peripheries. The historians she studies also investigated analogies between paths in Eastern Europe and regions of West Africa, Latin America and East Asia.
Book Synopsis Combatting Illicit Trade on the EU Border by : Celina Nowak
Download or read book Combatting Illicit Trade on the EU Border written by Celina Nowak and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book provides the first-ever comparative study on criminal policy concerning the illicit trade of tobacco, conducted among four comparatively new EU Member States (Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Romania) and two "old" EU countries (Germany and Italy). The book addresses the national legal frameworks, current criminological situation regarding illicit trade of tobacco, and the practical challenges faced by national law enforcement authorities in the countries examined. It also considers the international framework, and concludes with a horizontal report. The objective of the book is to highlight legislative and practical challenges in the fight against illegal tobacco products at the national and transnational level, and to formulate recommendations for overcoming them more effectively in Europe.--
