Book excerpt: Extraordinary people marked 'not normal' come from all different walks of life. For far too long, a shroud of darkness was thrown over those who've had boundless potential to transcend greatness; shunned and cast out through the misjudgment forced upon them. People enduring isolation from being trapped inside their own minds. People labeled with an ASD-Autism Spectrum Disorder. Seeds of greatness cannot be cultivated through judgment and condemnation. Imagine a world never having heard the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart? Never seeing the extraordinary art of Michelangelo? What if Sir Isaac Newton hadn't discovered gravity, and laws of motion that would be relevant 300 years later? And for all the writers out there...were you aware that Lewis Carroll-author of 'Alice in Wonderland'-fell under the umbrella of Autism? So to all of you, who are reading this, ask yourself... "Is Autism a disorder, or is it a gift?" Through their short stories and poetry, a collection of talented authors have tackled that question.

This book was released on 2013-10-29 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On April 1, 1865, the steamboat Bertrand, a sternwheeler bound from St. Louis to Fort Benton in Montana Territory, hit a snag in the Missouri River and sank twenty miles north of Omaha. The crew removed only a few items before the boat was silted over. For more than a century thereafter, the Bertrand remained buried until it was discovered by treasure hunters, its cargo largely intact. This book categorizes some 300,000 artifacts recovered from the Bertrand in 1968, and also describes the invention, manufacture, marketing, distribution, and sale of these products and traces their route to the frontier mining camps of Montana Territory. The ship and its contents are a time capsule of mid-nineteenth-century America, rich with information about the history of industry, technology, and commerce in the Trans-Missouri West. In addition to enumerating the items the boat was transporting to Montana, and offering a photographic sample of the merchandise, Switzer places the Bertrand itself in historical context, examining its intended use and the technology of light-draft steam-driven river craft. His account of steamboat commerce provides multiple insights into the industrial revolution in the East, the nature and importance of Missouri River commerce in the mid-1800s, and the decline in this trade after the Civil War. Switzer also introduces the people associated with the Bertrand. He has unearthed biographical details illuminating the private and social lives of the officers, crew members, and passengers, as well as the consignees to whom the cargo was being shipped. He offers insight into not only the passengers’ reasons for traveling to the frontier mining camps of Montana Territory, but also the careers of some of the entrepreneurs and political movers and shakers of the Upper Missouri in the 1860s. This unique reference for historians of commerce in the American West will also fascinate anyone interested in the technology and history of riverine transport.

She is such a great storyteller, and there is always a lesson to be learned. Phylliss new book is so much like her personality, full of mirth, a history lesson, nurturing words, and a brief glimpse into a remarkable mind. The story of Fifty-Four made me smile and remember what I was thinking at that age and what I could expect to come to mind as I move into my next phase of life (Dr. Joye M. Carter, author of My Strength Comes from Within: An Autobiography; I Speak for the Dead; and Let Me Give You a Peace of My Mind). Beyond the Wind Chimes is a poignant collection of short stories written by the talented Phyllis Adair Ward, author of Wind Chimes and Promises. I found myself wiping a tear or two or simply scratching my head. The stories are whimsical, thought-provoking, and a very easy read. It is a must read accompanied by a cup of coffee or tea (Beatrice Toney Bailey, author of Farewell, My Friend). If you love Phyllis, you will love this book. If you dont know Phyllis, read it, and your heart will be touched. She has written poems, stories, essays, and commentaries infused with warmth and connection. Meet Miss Lorraine and Dr. Adams if you want a heart-warmer. Meet mothers and grandmothers, cousins, aunts, and uncles. You will find humor, kindness, and tragedy, along with gratitude for the miracles of living. Here is a fine model for aging gracefully with only a few complaints. Phyllis succeeds in her goal for this book, I want to write acceptable or unacceptable words. I want to empty out my heart and soul on paper. Thats my gift to the world. The only one I really have. She gives abundantly. (Linda Caldwell Lee, author of Mystics, Me and Moby: A Spiritual Road Trip and What Happiness Required).

Book excerpt: THE THIRTEENTH CHIME THE THIRTEENTH CHIME is a collection of poems in various forms. They were composed over a period in excess of forty years. Many of them appeared in various periodicals and anthologies on both sides of the Atlantic. They are written in a variety of forms and with a variety of themes. Subject matter is sometimes personal and sometimes public. The author never dates his work as some of the poems took decades to finish. So the reader will have to decide which poems began in youth and which belong to an older sensibility. Although the subjects of these poems range widely from love to war and all points between what they share is poetry's ability to create memorable shortcuts to significant meaning. A few lines of verse can say a lot. Concentrated power produced by skilful concision is the unique quality of poetry. The author is an award-winning poet who lives in Essex, half-way between London and Southend thus halfway between the city and the sea. A railway runs through his town and joins the two. The author hopes the reader enjoys the journeys his poems make. This is the final volume of my Collected Poetry. Tanka & Haiku appeared in THE DEBRIS FIELD; shorter poems (no more than one page long) appeared in THE SECOND CHANNEL; longer poems (more than a page long) appear here in the THIRTEENTH CHIME. All volumes are published by CREATESPACE and are available from amazon.com; my work is also available on KINDLE as THE DEBRIS FIELD (Collected Tanka & Haiku) and BEYOND THE TERMINUS (Collected Poems).

Book excerpt: THE NEW GHOST FINDER NOVEL from the bestselling author of the Nightside and Secret Histories series... Meet the operatives of the Carnacki Institute—JC Chance: the team leader, brave, charming, and almost unbearably arrogant; Melody Chambers: the science geek who keeps the antisupernatural equipment running; and Happy Jack Palmer: the terminally gloomy telepath. Their mission: Do Something About Ghosts. Lay them to rest, send them packing, or just kick their nasty ectoplasmic arses… Their latest assignment takes JC and the team to a small country village, site of a famously haunted inn. At first, JC thinks that the spirits in the King’s Arms are more the stuff of urban legend than anything that needs the Ghost Finders’ expertise. Then one story rings true: the tale of a traveler trapped by an unusual thunderstorm who retired to her room for the night—and vanished. Trapped by an unusual thunderstorm—like the one that begins raging outside shortly after they arrive… As the team investigates, they are forced, one by one, to face some hard truths about themselves, their relationships, and the haunting itself—truths that may push Happy Jack over the edge into the madness that he has always feared...

Book excerpt: The old Blackwood Manor stood as a brooding sentinel on a hill, its gothic spires piercing the sky like skeletal fingers. It was a house of shadows, whispers, and a history that was as dark and deep as the woods that surrounded it. Tonight, a gathering of peculiar individuals had assembled within its hallowed walls. They were drawn together by a shared fascination with the occult, a thirst for the unknown, and a touch of the macabre. At the heart of the grand hall, a colossal grandfather clock stood, its ornate carvings glinting in the flickering candlelight. It was a relic of the manor's past, a timepiece that seemed to possess a life of its own. The clock's face was adorned with intricate symbols and runes, their meanings lost to time. Its pendulum swung with an eerie, hypnotic rhythm, almost as if it were counting down to some inevitable doom. Among the gathered were Eleanor, a woman with a haunted look and a penchant for the dramatic; Jasper, a skeptical journalist with a cynical smirk; Evelyn, an ethereal medium with eyes that held the depths of an ocean; and Dr. Silas Thorne, a renowned psychologist with a reputation for debunking the supernatural. But they weren't alone. Other figures lurked in the shadows of the grand hall. There was Victor Blackwood, the reclusive owner of the manor, his gaunt face a mask of barely concealed disdain. Beside him stood his niece, Lillian, her porcelain features betraying no emotion. In a corner, partially obscured by a heavy velvet curtain, sat the ancient groundskeeper, Ezra, his gnarled hands clutching a gnarled cane. "Are we all ready?" Evelyn asked, her voice soft as a summer breeze. A hush fell over the room as everyone nodded. The air was thick with anticipation, heavy with the weight of unspoken fears and hidden agendas. "Remember," Dr. Thorne said, his voice cutting through the silence, "this is a scientific experiment. There's no such thing as ghosts or spirits." His words rang hollow in the cavernous room as if the very walls of Blackwood Manor were laughing at his skepticism. Eleanor scoffed, her eyes flashing. "Oh, really? Then how do you explain the strange occurrences in this house?" Her voice trembled with a mix of fear and excitement. "The whispers in the night, the shadows that move of their own accord, the cold spots that appear out of nowhere?" Victor Blackwood cleared his throat, his voice a rasp that sent shivers down the spines of those present. "My family has lived in this house for generations. We've seen things... heard things... that defy explanation." His eyes darted nervously to the grandfather clock. "That clock... it's been in the family for centuries. It's said to have... unusual properties." Before anyone could reply, the grandfather clock began to chime. The deep, resonant tones echoed through the hall, filling the room with a sense of foreboding. The chimes were slow, deliberate as if each one was a heartbeat in the grand rhythm of time. With each chime, the temperature in the room seemed to drop, the air becoming thick and oppressive. With the twelfth chime, a collective breath was held. The room was silent, save for the ticking of the clock. Then, the thirteenth chime. It was different from the others-deeper, more resonant, almost mournful. As the final note faded, the lights flickered and died, plunging the room into darkness. A gasp rippled through the group. A moment of utter chaos ensued the sound of shuffling feet and murmured exclamations filling the void. Then, a scream pierced the darkness-high-pitched, terrified, and abruptly cut short. When the lights finally flickered back on, a horrifying scene unfolded. Eleanor lay sprawled on the floor, a look of terror frozen on her face. A sharp, glistening object protruded from her chest. Blood pooled around her body, seeping into the intricate patterns of the Persian rug beneath her. "My God," Jasper whispered, his voice trembling. His journalist's instincts warred with his horror, his hand unconsciously reaching for the notebook in his pocket. Evelyn was the first to move, her hands trembling as she reached for Eleanor's wrist. "She's gone," she said softly, her voice filled with sorrow. But as she touched Eleanor's skin, she recoiled as if burned. "Something's wrong," she gasped. "I... I can feel her. She's still here!" Dr. Thorne pushed past her, his face a mask of professional detachment as he examined the body. "The weapon appears to be a letter opener," he said, his voice barely audible. "It was plunged into her heart with considerable force."

Where as Susan Culhane put her high-heeled shoe on the bottom rail of the fence and pulled herself up allowing her to stand there with her head barely over the top rail, “Sunni, I must insist that you come and talk to us right now. You must not speak anymore with your grandparents.” “Go to hell,” said Sunni. “Sunni!” scolded her grandmother. “Don’t you talk like that, now. Do you hear me, Sunni?” “Yes, ma’am, but I don’t want to talk to that old bitch.” “Now, Sunni, I mean it. You watch your mouth and hush up that cussing. That’s not going to help matters at all.” “Well, she is.” “Sunni.” “Sunni, come here this instant. I demand that you come here.” Said Susan Culhane.

Book excerpt: Have we ever really believed in gender? Is there any evidence that we have resisted, rejected, and denied the division of human beings into 'male' and 'female'? Both our charter narratives and popular media murmur a persistent «no». The theories of Luce Irigaray, Mikhail Bakhtin, and Roland Barthes, when applied to works as varied as Bible stories, parables, nursery rhymes, Greek myths and drama, Shakespeare's plays, and contemporary film reveal a new character - the transcengenderist mucosa. The transcengenderist mucosa - an original metaphor derived from our own deep physical structures: our permeable cellular membranes - deconstructs the equilibrium of binary gender transcends 'male' and 'female' by being, simultaneously, both and neither. Through the agency of the transcengenderist mucosa, who operates in the liminal space between male and female, we recognize that 'gender' does not exist in reality, and that the violence and destruction inherent in the binary definition of gender can be transcended.
