Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond the Terrazzo Veranda is more than a love story. Although a memoir, it traces how society changes over a lifetime. Our essence is due to many factors--some within our control--but many contingent on others' plans. Sometimes what happens before our birth impacts our personalities. My mother seeing my sister killed by a speeding truck from the veranda of our house affected my family and destroyed my mother. People mature and my evolution from a whining boy into a macho man and then a scholar was a slow and painful process. Others see us differently while struggling to know our talents and weaknesses. This story leads the reader from my early defiance, my success in sports, love of literature and lifelong passion for people into some unpredictable and dangerous situations. It also deals with prejudice, ignorance and sexism that I witnessed as a victim, a bystander and perpetrator. Having no single career, I am fortunate that working in business, earning a doctorate, teaching and being an actor allowed me to interact with people in different contexts. Sadly, nothing lasts and friendships, trysts and choices end. Living needs empathy for neighbors, ourselves, and the strangers we will meet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A celebration of Tuscan farmhouse style, with practical advice on how to bring the look home. For anyone who has ever dreamed of living under the Tuscan sun, Italian Rustic is the next best thing--a step-by-step guide to recreating the romance and appeal of the weathered Italian farmhouse. This nuts-and-bolts guide to building Italian-style walks the reader through all the elements that make the rustic Italian home so unique, from the hand-laid stone walls to the artisanal stucco wall finishes. Author Elizabeth Minchilli, an American design writer based in Rome and Tuscany, received dozens of questions from readers after publishing her last book, Artisan's Restoring a Home in Italy. The queries went beyond the usual searches for fabric and couches. "People were hungry to know how terra-cotta tiles were laid, or how fireplaces were built," she says. Italian Rustic, researched with the help of her Italian architect husband, is the user-friendly result: a book that explains, in clear text accompanied by photographs and drawings, how to lay a tile floor a la Italiana, or add a Tuscan-style pergola to any garden. With more than 300 stunning photographs shot on location in Tuscany and Umbria, the book contains profiles of local artisans, engaging text on how the farmhouse style evolved, and targeted advice on how Americans can find Italian-style building materials and craftsmen close to home. This essential sourcebook will appeal to anyone building an addition or an entire house from scratch, or for homeowners who want to add just a touch of Italian style to their houses.

Book excerpt: Sri Lanka Style showcases 30 of the finest traditional and modern dwellings in Sri Lanka. Reflecting its location and status as a hub of Indian Ocean trade from time immemorial, the tropical island of Sri Lanka has always been open to the movements and patterns of world culture. Indigenous architects and cultural traditions, colonial incursions and the vagaries of living in a tropical environment have combined to produce a distinctive Sri Lankan architectural style: thick lime-washed walls, tall windows and doors, terracotta or granite tile floors, open pavilions and verandas, courtyard gardens, elaborately carved furniture and vibrant hand-looms. The Sri Lankan homes vary from private homes to retreats and resorts, all designed by the island's most creative architects and interior designers including some by the world-renowned architect Geoffrey Bawa that have never been seen before. These works demonstrate the essentials of the Sri Lankan spaces open to the elements and the natural use of space and decor, contributing to a palpable sense of peace and discipline. In addition, there are practical design ideas that can be applied to any tropical locale. Photographed entirely on location, Sri Lanka Style is an inspirational sourcebook of contemporary tropical style.

Book excerpt: As India enters an election year, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party looks as invincible as the Congress once looked in the first few decades after Independence. Many believe that the only way a regime change can be effected is if political parties in the opposition come together to form a mahagathbandhan, or a grand coalition. As the opposition faces the arduous task of uniting disparate interests and ideologies, there is much they can learn from the story of Ram Manohar Lohia—the first architect of coalition politics in India. Also in this issue: Bela Bhatia on what really happened in the Nulkatong encounter; Hartosh Singh Bal on how caste trumped class in the state elections; Himanshu on why the Modi government is obscuring data on unemployment; Yogendra Yadav on what the Modi government has done to farmers; Gabriele Cecconi on the environmental crisis unfolding in the world’s largest refugee camp; Sara Rai on her journey out of and into language.

Two descriptive narrative pieces derive from the author's personal experience and invite the reader to shift attention from merely seeing to noticing. Four poems range from expressing sentiments about rural life and relationships to a study in irony. A final section deals with personal identity and invites the reader to explore the topic more fully and to participate in its development more deeply. The ensemble concludes with a cluster of foundation ideas.

Book excerpt: Wanting to understand how her path is tied to her mother tongue, Anne, a young, multiracial American woman, travels through China, the country of her mother’s birth. Along the way, she tries on different roles—seeker, teacher, student, girlfriend, artist, and daughter—and continually asks herself: Why do I feel called to make this journey? Whether witnessing a Tibetan sky burial, teaching English at a university in Chengdu, visiting her grandmother in LA, or falling in love with a Chinese painter, Anne is always in pursuit of intimacy with others, even as she is all too aware of her silences and separation. For two years, she settles into a comfortable routine in her boyfriend’s apartment and regains fluency in Chinese, a language she spoke as a young child but has used less and less as an adult. Eventually, however, her desire to know herself in other ways surfaces again. She misses speaking English, she feels suffocated by urban, polluted China, and she starts to fall for another man. Ultimately, Anne realizes that to live her truth as a mixed-race, bilingual woman she must embrace all of her influences and layers. In a world that often wants us to choose a side or fit an ideal, she learns that she can both belong and not belong wherever she is, and that home is ultimately found within.
