Book Synopsis Beyond the Security Dilemma by : Jason G. Ralph
Download or read book Beyond the Security Dilemma written by Jason G. Ralph and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001. The security dilemma has long been at the heart of the security studies discipline. Moving beyond this, this book attacks the assumptions of the traditional concept and redefines the security dilemma in a way more useful for examining security policy. By exposing the historical and social contingency of the traditional concept, the book argues that the security dilemma is an important though not a permanently operating feature of international politics. An examination of US policy towards the Soviet Union demonstrates the limits of perceiving the Cold War and challenges the role that American security policy has played in the process of constructing a transatlantic security community.
Book Synopsis Security and Stability in the New Space Age by : Brad Townsend
Download or read book Security and Stability in the New Space Age written by Brad Townsend and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-12 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the drivers behind great power security competition in space to determine whether realistic strategic alternatives exist to further militarization. Space is an area of increasing economic and military competition. This book offers an analysis of actions and events indicative of a growing security dilemma in space, which is generating an intensifying arms race between the US, China, and Russia. It explores the dynamics behind a potential future war in space and investigates methods of preventing an arms race from an international relations theory and military-strategy standpoint. The book is divided into three parts: the first section offers a broad discussion of the applicability of international relations theory to current conditions in space; the second is a direct application of theory to the space environment to determine whether competition or cooperation is the optimal strategic choice; the third section focuses on testing the hypotheses against reality, by analyzing novel alternatives to three major categories of space systems. The volume concludes with a study of the practical limitations of applying a strategy centered on commercialization as a method of defusing the orbital security dilemma. This book will be of interest to students of space power, strategic studies, and international relations.

Book Synopsis The Cybersecurity Dilemma by : Ben Buchanan
Download or read book The Cybersecurity Dilemma written by Ben Buchanan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-02-01 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do nations break into one another's most important computer networks? There is an obvious answer: to steal valuable information or to attack. But this isn't the full story. This book draws on often-overlooked documents leaked by Edward Snowden, real-world case studies of cyber operations, and policymaker perspectives to show that intruding into other countries' networks has enormous defensive value as well. Two nations, neither of which seeks to harm the other but neither of which trusts the other, will often find it prudent to launch intrusions. This general problem, in which a nation's means of securing itself threatens the security of others and risks escalating tension, is a bedrock concept in international relations and is called the 'security dilemma'. This book shows not only that the security dilemma applies to cyber operations, but also that the particular characteristics of the digital domain mean that the effects are deeply pronounced. The cybersecurity dilemma is both a vital concern of modern statecraft and a means of accessibly understanding the essential components of cyber operations.
Book Synopsis Alliance Politics by : Glenn H. Snyder
Download or read book Alliance Politics written by Glenn H. Snyder and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glenn H. Snyder creates a theory of alliances by deductive reasoning about the international system, by integrating ideas from neorealism, coalition formation, bargaining, and game theory, and by empirical generalization from international history. Using cases from 1879 to 1914 to present a theory of alliance formation and management in a multipolar international system, he focuses particularly on three cases--Austria-Germany, Austria-Germany-Russia, and France-Russia--and examines twenty-two episodes of intra-alliance bargaining. Snyder develops the concept of the alliance security dilemma as a vehicle for examining influence relations between allies. He draws parallels between alliance and adversary bargaining and shows how the two intersect. He assesses the role of alliance norms and the interplay of concerts and alliances. His great achievement in Alliance Politics is to have crafted definitive scholarly insights in a way that is useful and interesting not only to the specialist in security affairs but also to any reasonably informed person trying to understand world affairs.

Book Synopsis National Security Dilemmas by : Colin S. Gray
Download or read book National Security Dilemmas written by Colin S. Gray and published by Potomac Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2011-09 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A contemporary primer on the leading arguments about U.S. national security, National Security Dilemmas addresses the major challenges and opportunities that are live-issue areas for American policymakers and strategists today. Colin S. Gray provides an in-depth analysis of a policy and strategy for deterrence; the long-term U.S. bid to transform its armed forces' capabilities, with particular reference to strategic surprise, in the face of many great uncertainties; the difficulty of understanding and exploiting the challenge of revolutionary change in warfare; the problems posed by enemies who fight using irregular methods; and the awesome dilemmas for U.S. policy over the options to wage preventive and preemptive warfare. With forty years' experience as a strategist, within and outside of government, Gray uses a problem-solving motif throughout the book, suggesting solutions to the challenges he identifies. The book's master narrative is that the United States must take a more considered strategic approach to its security dilemmas. Too often, the country's leaders decide on a policy and then move to take action, all the while neglecting to devise a plan that would connect its political purposes to military means. While many of Gray's judgments here are critical of current ideas and behavior, he crafted them as helpful guides should planners adopt them when revising policies and approaches. Strategy is a practical matter; truly it is the zone wherein theory meets practice. This text can be used as an expert guide to the major national security challenges of today. It both explains the structure of these challenges and provides useful answers. With a foreword by Lt. Gen. Paul K. Van Riper, USMC (Ret.), Bren Chair, Marine Corps University, Quantico, Virginia.

Book Synopsis The Strategic Logic of the Contemporary Security Dilemma by : U. S. Army War College
Download or read book The Strategic Logic of the Contemporary Security Dilemma written by U. S. Army War College and published by . This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Peace of Westphalia in 1648 to the end of World War II and beyond the Cold War period, the prevailing assumption was that interstate warfare would continue to be the dominant threat to global peace and prosperity. Today's wars, by contrast, are intrastate conflicts that take place mainly within-not across-national borders. As a consequence, the disease of intrastate conflict has been allowed to rage relatively unchecked across large areas of the world, and has devastated the lives of millions of human beings. At the same time, indirect and implicit unmet needs (e.g., poverty) lead people into greater and greater personal and collective insecurity. In the past, the traditional security dilemma was: What is defensive, and what is aggressive? This problem has never been sorted out. It depends entirely on one's interpretation-based on culture, values, external relationships, interests, and concepts of threat to national security.

Book Synopsis Iran Security Dilemma Behind Paris Climate Change Agreement by : Majid Asadnabizadeh

This book was released on 2020-02-20 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change is becoming, as well as one of the most complex, the main ecological legal and political problems of the 21st century. Responses to climate change by different countries based on negotiations are the focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions to avoid runaway impacts and on addressing the impacts that are already with us. To put it simply, the COP 21 or the Paris Climate Conference led to a new international climate agree- ment, applicable to all countries, aiming to keep global warming below 2˚C, in accordance with the recommendations of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The 197 “Negotiating Parties” committed to drawing up long-term low greenhouse gas emission development strategies. This was the first time that a universal agreement was reached in the fight against climate change. The aim is to keep the rise in global average temperature far below 2˚C above pre-industrial rates and to ensure that efforts are made to restrict the increase in temperature to 1.5˚C. The Paris Agreement calls for all parties to update their commitments to reducing greenhouse gas emissions every five years in order to accomplish this. The Countries agreed to reach as soon as possible a world limit in greenhouse emissions to strike a balance among pollution and their elimination in the second half of the century.

Book Synopsis India-China Maritime Competition by : Rajesh Basrur
Download or read book India-China Maritime Competition written by Rajesh Basrur and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-03 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume critically examines the concept of the “security dilemma” and applies it to India–China maritime competition. Though frequently employed in academic discussion and popular commentary on the Sino-Indian relationship, the term has rarely been critically analysed. The volume addresses the gap by examining whether the security dilemma is a useful concept in explaining the naval and foreign policy strategies of India and China. China’s Belt and Road Initiative and its expansive engagement in the Indian Ocean Region have resulted in India significantly scaling up investment in its navy, adding ships, naval aircraft and submarines. This volume investigates how the rivalry is playing out in different sub-regions of the Indian Ocean, and the responses of other powers, notably the United States and prominent Southeast Asian states. Their reactions to the Sino-Indian rivalry are an underexplored topic and the chapters in this book reveal how they selectively use that rivalry while trying to steer clear of making definite choices. The book concludes with recommendations on mitigating the security dilemma. This work will be of great interest to students of strategic studies, international relations, maritime security, and Asian politics.
