Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book asks readers to adopt a critical and comprehensive view of education (pre-K to lifelong learning) as existing both within classroom walls, and in the surrounding world, including communities and workplaces. It presents an integrated view of online learning, community schools, communiversities, and learning through work. Our educational systems are organized in ways that make this integration difficult. We have elaborate systems of formal instruction––academies, schools, universities, and training institutes––all to facilitate learning within the walls. At the same time we have ample opportunities for learning in the wild. Unfortunately these systems diverge to the point that they do little to support learning that allows us to draw from both of the realms of knowledge. But it is possible to bring together learning within the walls with that beyond the walls. Moreover it is crucial to make these connections in the world of today. In order to bring together the classroom and daily life we need an educational system that does that as well. The book provides a coherent account of how schooling can and should relate to learning beyond the classroom walls.

Book excerpt: This book examines contexts and possibilities in Aotearoa New Zealand education contexts arising from the international trend for open, flexible, innovative learning environments (ILE), specifically on the pedagogical load. The book responds to questions such as: What does it mean to teach, learn or lead in an innovative learning environment? What happens when teachers move form single cell learning spaces to open, collaborative ones? The chapters provide examples of how teaching in new spaces can be an exciting challenge for teachers and students where they try new ways of teaching and learning, and rethink the purposes of learning and the implications of societal change for learning and what is valued. Examples are drawn from pre-service teachers working in primary and secondary schools and in-service teachers learning to become professionals. The book offers insights into a variety of educational contexts where teachers and students learn and adapt to new learning spaces, and also how different teaching and learning partnerships may be conceived, and flourish. It focuses attention on a range of aspects that teachers, school leaders, and other educators, and researchers may find valuable when they embark on similar initiatives to consider issues pivotal to productive and effective innovative learning environment design, development and implementation.

Book excerpt: This monograph analyses and describes successful educational actions with a specific focus on vulnerable groups (i.e. youth, migrants, cultural groups e.g. Roma, women, and people with disabilities). Concrete data that shows success in school performance in subject matters such as math or language will be provided, as well as children, teachers and families accounts of the impact of this success. Alongside, there is an analysis of the relationship between these children’s educational performance with their inclusion or exclusion from different areas of society (i.e. housing, health, employment, and social and political participation). Many studies have already diagnosed and described the causes of educational and social exclusion of these vulnerable groups. This monograph, however, provides solutions, that is, actions for success identified through the INCLUD-ED project, thus providing both, contrasted data and solid theoretical background and development. Some examples of these actions are interactive groups (or heterogeneous grouping in the classroom with reorganisation of human resources), extension of the learning time, homework clubs, tutored libraries, family and community educative participation, family education, or dialogic literary gatherings. All these actions have been defined as successful educational actions, which mean that they lead to both efficiency and equity. Finally, recommendations for policy and practice are included and discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The crisis of borders and prisons can be seen starkly in statistics. In 2011 some 1,500 migrants died trying to enter Europe, and the United States deported nearly 400,000 and imprisoned some 2.3 million people--more than at any other time in history. International borders are increasingly militarized places embedded within domestic policing and imprisonment and entwined with expanding prison-industrial complexes. Beyond Walls and Cages offers scholarly and activist perspectives on these issues and explores how the international community can move toward a more humane future. Working at a range of geographic scales and locations, contributors examine concrete and ideological connections among prisons, migration policing and detention, border fortification, and militarization. They challenge the idea that prisons and borders create safety, security, and order, showing that they can be forms of coercive mobility that separate loved ones, disempower communities, and increase shared harms of poverty. Walls and cages can also fortify wealth and power inequalities, racism, and gender and sexual oppression. As governments increasingly rely on criminalization and violent measures of exclusion and containment, strategies for achieving change are essential. Beyond Walls and Cages develops abolitionist, no borders, and decolonial analyses and methods for social change, showing how seemingly disconnected forms of state violence are interconnected. Creating a more just and free world--whether in the Mexico-U.S. borderlands, the Morocco-Spain region, South Africa, Montana, or Philadelphia--requires that people who are most affected become central to building alternatives to global crosscurrents of criminalization and militarization. Book excerpt: Beyond the Classroom Walls is a collection of short stories involving parents', students', and teachers', lives outside the school building. Expect drama in each of the stories as well as a life lesson. As a result of the life lesson the main characters have learned something from their mistakes and go on to be successful in life. The stories in this book are directed toward young adults, although any age can relate. I have included a variety of ethnicity and age groups. Each story has a different conflict including a drowning, kidnapping, and a marital separation. Each of the twelve stories is challenged with conflicts in a different setting, placed on the east coast of North America. These young adult short stories will challenge any age to choose relationships that will better their own lives.

Book excerpt: "Kohn's analytical style ... is brought to bear on big-picture policy issues as well as small-scale classroom interactions. He looks carefully at research about homework, play, the supposed benefits of practice, parent involvement in education, and summer learning loss - discovering in each case what we've been led to believe doesn't always match what the studies actually say. Kohn actually challenges us to reconsider the goals that underlie our methods, to explore the often troubling values that inform talk about everything from the disproportionate enthusiasm for STEM subjects to claims made for "effective" teaching strategies."--Back cover.

Book excerpt: Paul Wilkes believes that monastic spiritual wisdom can and should be accessible to all. Over the course of one year, he made monthly trips to the brothers at Mepkin Abbey, a Trappist Monastery. During each visit he focused on a particular aspect of monastic life, and each month's visit comprises a chapter of this book. Each chapter opens with a description of Wilkes' physical visit to the monastery, which he uses to lead into difficult explorations of issues such as faith, prayer, community, and discernment. Each chapter closes as Wilkes searches for the proper ways to integrate what he has learned during his time at the Abbey into his life as a father, husband, teach, writer, and lay minister. He uses monastic wisdom to speak to the journey of faith itself, letting readers discover their own path "beyond the walls."

Book excerpt: Designed to support student teachers during their student placements, Coursework to Classroom: A Guide for a Successful Student Teaching Experience equips readers with strategies to facilitate intentional, reflective discourse with their students, the practical tools they need to successfully transition from the higher education classroom to the workforce, and valuable information to help them make the most of their experience as a pre-service teacher. The book is organized into four units. Unit I focuses on the first week of student teaching, ethical practices, and student and teacher rights. Unit II emphasizes three critical aspects of effective teachers: routines and structures, parent and family engagement, and impact on student learning. In Unit III, readers become acquainted with the foundations of teaching, including teaching frameworks, curriculum in action, and how to shift from planning for teaching to planning for learning. Unit IV provides insights and strategies to assist candidates in applying, seeking, and interviewing for their first teaching position, licensure requirements, and what to expect during the early years of their career. Throughout, advice from the field, reflection exercises, discussion questions, and interactive appendices support critical thinking and deeper learning. Designed to bridge the gap between study and real-world experience, Coursework to Classroom is an essential guide for pre-service teachers.
