Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On an unseasonably warm Easter Sunday, a young girl named Ivy discovers a chilling secret in the basement of the Rumbaugh pharmacy across the street from the hotel where she lives with her mother. The discovery reveals a disturbing side to the eccentric lives of family friends Abner and Adolph Rumbaugh, known throughout their small western Pennsylvania town simply as the Twins. It seems that Ab and Dolph have been compelled by a powerful mutual love for their deceased mother to do something extraordinary, something that in its own twisted way bridges the gap between the living and the dead. Immediately, Ivy's discovery provokes the revelation of a Rumbaugh family curse, a curse that, as Ivy will learn over the coming years, holds a strange power over herself and her own mother. In his third book for young adults, Jack Gantos has scripted a completely original drama. With gothic flavor and black humor, he depicts a group of people bound together by love, compulsion . . . and a passion for taxidermy.

The chapters are like peeling an onion as Hall deftly delivers the most dismal times of her life. Readers will experience so many emotions, but in the end will be cheering for Hall's escape, redemption, and power to rebuild a successful life. She credits her beloved 93-year-old Grandmother unconditional love and wisdom for giving her the endurance and strength to overcome all that life has dealt her. Hall reveals, "I sought answers from others about my own value. I did not see nor know that I was born valuable," but continuous talk therapy has helped her to let go of shame, anxiety, and self-hate and walk proudly in her truth. She challenges readers to own their power and to unabashedly live their reality with no regrets. Today, she is vulnerable enough and ready to expend the energy to try emotional intimacy to break the love curse because she knows that if Love fails her again and again, she is built and equipped to survive.Hall says, "Society thinks being single is a sickness or disorder and that can lead to toxic relationships." She unapologetically takes the reader on her journey to find peace, joy, and wholeness. Hall, an advocate, and champion of mental wellness realize that hurt and broken people hurt and break others. She has committed her entire life to avoid being like her mentally ill mother, and to shoulder the burden of responsibility, along with her ex-husband Mark, for caring for her three boys and only daughter whom all have special abilities.

Melody McIntyre, stage manager extraordinaire, has a plan for everything. What she doesn’t have? Success with love. Every time she falls for someone during a school performance, both the romance and the show end in catastrophe. So, Mel swears off any entanglements until their upcoming production of Les Mis is over. Of course, Mel didn’t count on Odile Rose, rising star in the acting world, auditioning for the spring performance. And she definitely didn’t expect Odile to be sweet and funny, and care as much about the play’s success as Mel. Which means that Melody McIntyre’s only plan now is trying desperately not to fall in love.

Book excerpt: With issues such as the ordination of women and the call for "inclusive" language affecting the Church today, Dr. Amda Spencer has provided a helpful and important study of how the Scriptures really speak to these and other issues related to the role of women in the Church. From the biblical account of creation and "the fall" to other relevant Old Testament passages, "Beyond the Curse" carefully examines the attitudes toward and teachings about women" especially those of Jesus and Paul. "Beyond the Curse" sheds light on instances in the New Testament of feminine authority and on feminine metaphors used in Scripture to define God, the church, and society. Jesus is shown to have broken through the cultural barriers of first-century Palestine in His attitudes toward and dealings with women. Paul's later works are found to be consistent with Jesus' views, as Spencer notes the vital place of women in Paul's ministry. Women in leadership roles and the many implications are viewed firsthand by Dr. Spencer" herself a minister. Dr. William David Spencer, the author's husband, gives an afterword, explaining his personal journey as the spouse of an ordained minister. Timely and vital to an understanding of the growth of a woman's role in the Church, "Beyond the Curse" is a compelling and important work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "From Beyond" is a horror short story by American writer H. P. Lovecraft. It was written in 1920 and was first published in The Fantasy Fan in June 1934. The story is told from the first-person perspective of an unnamed narrator and details his experiences with a scientist named Crawford Tillinghast. Tillinghast creates an electronic device that emits a resonance wave, which stimulates an affected person's pineal gland, thereby allowing them to perceive planes of existence outside the scope of accepted reality. Sharing the experience with Tillinghast, the narrator becomes cognizant of a translucent, alien environment that overlaps our own recognized reality. From this perspective, he witnesses hordes of strange and horrific creatures that defy description. Tillinghast reveals that he has used his machine to transport his house servants into the overlapping plane of reality. He also reveals that the effect works both ways, and allows the alien creature denizens of the alternate dimension to perceive humans. Tillinghast's servants were attacked and killed by one such alien entity, and Tillinghast informs the narrator that it is right behind him. Terrified beyond measure, the narrator picks up a gun and shoots it at the machine, destroying it. Tillinghast dies immediately thereafter as a result of apoplexy. The police investigate the scene and it is placed on record that Tillinghast murdered the servants in spite of their remains never being found.
