Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kiraitu Murungi easily fits into the category of 'Philosopher-King', a leader who, according to Plato, combines intellect, intelligence and wisdom in leadership. An alumnus of the University of Nairobi and the prestigious Harvard University, Kiraitu has applied these qualities to serve the society at constituency, county and national levels. In this candid interview with veteran journalist, Njeri Rugene, Kiraitu is blunt, brutal, frank and rational on politics and development issues. The first of its kind in the country, this lengthy interview is not only inspiring, but also an insightful and igniting expos of realpolitik in Kenya.

Book Synopsis Beyond the Miracle of the Market by : Robert H. Bates
Download or read book Beyond the Miracle of the Market written by Robert H. Bates and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-05-09 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As capitalism defeated socialism in Eastern Europe, the market displaced the state in the developing world. In Beyond the Miracle of the Market, first published in 2005, Bates focuses on Kenya, a country that continued to grow while others declined in Africa, and mounts a prescient critique of the neo-classical turn in development economics. Attributing Kenya's exceptionalism to its economic institutions, this book pioneers the use of 'new institutionalism' in the field of development. In doing so, however, the author accuses the approach of being apolitical. Institutions introduce power into economic life. To account for their impact, economic analysis must therefore be complemented by political analysis; micro-economics must be imbedded in political science. In making this argument, Bates relates Kenya's subsequent economic decline to the change from the Kenyatta to the Moi regime and the subsequent use of the power of economic institutions to redistribute rather than to create wealth.

Book Synopsis Economic Development in Rural Areas by : Peter Dannenberg
Download or read book Economic Development in Rural Areas written by Peter Dannenberg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysing the ongoing changes and dynamics in rural development from a functional perspective through a series of case studies from the global north and south, this volume deepens our understanding of the importance of new functional and multifunctional approaches in policy, practice and theory. In rural areas of industrialized societies, food production as a basis for growth and employment has been declining for many decades. In the Global South, on the other hand, food production is still often the most important factor for socio-economic development. However, rural areas both in the industrialized north and in the global south are facing new challenges which lead to significant changes and threats to their development. New forms of food production, but also new functional (e.g. housing or business parks) and often multifunctional approaches are being discussed and practiced yet it remains unclear the extent to which these result in better or more sustainable development of rural areas.
