Download or read book The Case against Education written by Bryan Caplan and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-08-20 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why we need to stop wasting public funds on education Despite being immensely popular—and immensely lucrative—education is grossly overrated. Now with a new afterword by Bryan Caplan, this explosive book argues that the primary function of education is not to enhance students' skills but to signal the qualities of a good employee. Learn why students hunt for easy As only to forget most of what they learn after the final exam, why decades of growing access to education have not resulted in better jobs for average workers, how employers reward workers for costly schooling they rarely ever use, and why cutting education spending is the best remedy. Romantic notions about education being "good for the soul" must yield to careful research and common sense—The Case against Education points the way.

Book Synopsis Beyond Free College by : Eileen L. Strempel
Download or read book Beyond Free College written by Eileen L. Strempel and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-01-15 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond Free College outlines an audacious national agenda—consistent with, but far more comprehensive than, the current “free college” movement—that builds on the best of US higher education’s populist history such as the G.I. Bill and the community college transfer function. The authors align a wide constellation of higher education trends—online learning, prior learning assessment, competency-based learning, high school college-credit— with a rapidly shifting student transfer environment that privileges college credit as the pivotal educational catalyst to boost access and completion. The book’s agenda seeks greater productive investment in postsecondary education by privileging a single metric—lower-cost-per-degree-granted—as the animating driver of a transfer pathway that will fulfill the potential of its historical, progressive innovators. Beyond Free College’s goal is as simple as it is urgent: To galvanize higher education advocates in an effort to reorganize, reorient, and reignite the transfer function to serve the needs of a neotraditional student population that now constitutes the majority of college-goers in America; and in ways that advance completion, not just access to higher education.

Book Synopsis High School and Beyond Fourth Follow-up Methodology Report by : Daniel Zahs
Download or read book High School and Beyond Fourth Follow-up Methodology Report written by Daniel Zahs and published by Department of Education Office of Educational. This book was released on 1995 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes and evaluates the methods, procedures, techniques, and activities that produced the fourth (1992) follow-up of the High School and Beyond (HS&B) study. HS&B began in 1980 as the successor to the National Longitudinal Study of the High School Class of 1972. The original collection techniques of HS&B were replaced by computer assisted telephone interviews, and other electronic techniques replaced the original methods. HS&B data are more user-friendly and less resource-dependent as a results of these changes. There were 2 components to the fourth follow-up: (1) the respondent survey which was a computer assisted telephone interview (CATI) based on 14,825 members of the 1980 sophomore cohort, and (2) a transcript study based on the 9,064 sophomore cohort members who reported postsecondary attendance. The response to the respondent survey was 85.3%. Response rate for the transcript study varied from 50.4% at private, for-profit institutions to 95.1% at public, four-year institutions. Technical innovations in this survey round included verification and correction of previously collected data through the CATI instrument, online coding applications, and statistical quality control. Survey data and information about the methodology are presented in 49 tables. An appendix contains the transcript request packages. (SLD)

Book Synopsis Beyond the Tyranny of Testing by : Kenneth J. Gergen
Download or read book Beyond the Tyranny of Testing written by Kenneth J. Gergen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurement-based assessment has dominated our educational systems at the expense of the learning and the well-being of students and teachers. In this book, Gergen and Gill propose a radical alternative to this broken system, which is based instead on an inspirational conception of schools as sites of collective meaning-making and a relational orientation to evaluation. The authors acknowledge that it is within the process of relating that the world comes to be meaningful for us, and equally, learning and well-being are embedded in relational process, which testing and grades undermine. Providing detailed illustrations using cases from pioneering schools around the globe at both the primary and secondary level, this book demonstrates how a relational orientation to evaluation in education can enhance learning processes, foster students' engagement, vitalize relationships, and elevate the evaluation of teaching and the school as a whole. Featuring collaborative learning, dialogic pedagogy, and flexible curricula, relational evaluation truly speaks to the demands of a rapidly changing world.
