Book Synopsis The Minorities of Cyprus by : Nicholas Coureas
Download or read book The Minorities of Cyprus written by Nicholas Coureas and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-05-27 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the various minorities living in the island of Cyprus from the early modern (late Venetian and early Ottoman) period down to the present day. It charts their history, with special emphasis on their relations with the powers ruling Cyprus and with the two dominant Christian-Greek and Muslim-Turkish communities. The theme running through the book is that despite being significant members of Cyprus’ society, the three historical minorities (Maronites, Armenians and Latins) were only included in society to a certain extent by the two major communities. This was formalised in the post-independence (1960) period when they were compelled to become members of either dominant community and thus they suffered ‘internal exclusion’ by being regarded as religious sub-groups of one of the two dominant communities rather than national minorities in their own right. Within this general context, the social, legal and political roles, customs, culture and language of the various minorities are examined as they evolved through time and in response to internal and external developments affecting Cyprus in the political, economic and global spheres. They are discussed not as static entities, but as evolving groups that have adapted with greater or lesser degrees of success to the radical and at times painful changes Cyprus has undergone, especially over the last 150 years, in all walks of life. Finally, the question of what the future holds for the minorities of the island in the light of Cyprus’ EU membership and the prospect of reunification are also analysed. This book is a product of the conference “Minorities of Cyprus: Past, Present and Future”, which was held on 24 and 25 November 2007 at the European University Cyprus.
Book Synopsis The Ottoman World, the Mediterranean and North Africa, 1660–1760 by : Colin Heywood
Download or read book The Ottoman World, the Mediterranean and North Africa, 1660–1760 written by Colin Heywood and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr Heywood’s second volume of collected papers in the Variorum series brings together fourteen studies published between 2000 and 2010. They represent two of the main strands of his interests during the past decade: the era of Ottoman history dominated by the ministerial family of Köprülü; and the maritime history of the ’post-Braudelian’ Mediterranean, in the later 17th and early 18th centuries. Aspects of the Köprülü era under examination in Part One include the shifting chronology of the Çehrin campaign of 1678; a study of the role of renegades in Ottoman service, linked in this instance to the Venetian betrayal of the Cretan fortress of Grabusa to the Ottomans in 1691, and a study of the reorganisation of the Ottoman state courier service in 1696, together with three studies of English diplomacy at the Porte during the ’Long War’ of 1683-99. In Part Two maritime and Mediterranean themes predominate. Four papers revolve around the complexities of the English maritime and commercial presence in Algiers in the decades before and after 1700, and two examine the Ottoman maritime frontier in the western Mediterranean and in the Aegean in the same period. The volume concludes with a look at the daily (and mainly maritime) uncertainties in the life of the French community in Cyprus at the turn of the eighteenth century, and an examination of the emergence of Fernand Braudel’s intellectual involvement with Ottoman history, down to the publication in 1949 of his epochal study of the Mediterranean in the age of Philip II.

Book Synopsis EU Constitutional Law by : Allan Rosas
Download or read book EU Constitutional Law written by Allan Rosas and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-05-17 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third edition of this acclaimed book continues the story of the EU's constitutional journey. The EU's constitution, composed of myriad legal texts, case law and practice, is no less of a moving target than before and the pace of change has, if anything, increased since the publication of the second edition. In a constantly challenging geopolitical context, the EU faces unprecedented political, economic and cultural trials, all of which impact upon the evolution of its constitution. In particular, the migration crisis has given rise to the need for substantial revision of the chapter dealing with the area of freedom, security and justice, and the institutional reforms embarked upon in the quest to restore financial order have taken a more structured form following the inception of a European banking union. Fully updated to include the ramifications of Brexit, the book succeeds – where others have struggled – in making sense of the EU's complex constitutional order, focusing on its essential features but taking into account the profound changes that have taken place over the past 20 years. The EU has become much more than an internal economic market. Recently it may even be argued that the focus of action has been in areas such as immigration and third-country nationals, security and defence policy, and penal law and procedure, and the work towards creating a European banking union underlines the continued need to monitor economic and fiscal policy. Eschewing too much detail, the authors underline the essential values, principles and objectives of the integration regime as well as its basic normative structure and hierarchy. In this context, the decentralised nature of the EU is highlighted as an integral part of its constitutional make-up. Recurring themes include European citizenship, fundamental rights and the rule of law. The book also confronts head-on the problems and challenges facing the Union and the gap which is often perceived between lofty ideals and harsh realities. The book will be useful to students of EU law and European integration but will also appeal to a broader audience of researchers and practitioners, including political scientists.

Download or read book The Gift written by Dean Allen and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-05-23 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In every account of historical significance, there is what history has recorded, there is what research determines the reasons for that historical account to be valid, and there are those people who believe that there are inaccuracies which need to be clarified. Some of those people may then seek to re-write history as they see it, so that those inaccuracies might be removed and the historical account corrected. Unknown to most people though, is the back story, the account of what really happened. Lastly, for those not satisfied with these explanations of written history, there is one other: There is the way we wish a historical event had happened, instead of the way it did. Here, we examine what history would have looked like if we had the ability to make that wish come true. Some people contend that we do not have the right to make changes to events of the past. Leave it alone, they would say. Take the results for what they are. The future should become what it did become. Fine, I say, but while the future may well be written in stone, must the past also? Do we have the right to ask this question: Does He, The One Who decrees it all, have the final and only say?
