Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the issue of mistakes in psychoanalysis and psychodynamic therapy--the inevitability of making them, as far as possible how to avoid them, and what therapists can do to transform potential disasters into a means for growth in themselves as well as the patient. Further developing the creative therapeutic approach first elaborated in his classic Learning from the Patient, distinguished clinician and author Patrick Casement makes a compelling case for being open-minded rather than dogmatic in clinical practice. He shows how analysts can become blind to their own mistakes, and even more significantly, can fail to recognize when their efforts to guide or control the therapeutic process have become a problem for the patient. A wealth of evocative case material is used to illustrate how the process of internal supervision can facilitate heightened awareness of the patient's experience within the clinical encounter. Written with rare candor, this book challenges many traditional assumptions even as it affirms the healing power of psychodynamic work. It will be read with pleasure by practicing therapists as well as students and trainees. Winner--Gradiva Award, National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis

Book excerpt: An argument against the ideology of domesticity that separates work from home; lavishly illustrated, with architectural proposals for alternate approaches to working and living. Despite the increasing numbers of people who now work from home, in the popular imagination the home is still understood as the sanctuary of privacy and intimacy. Living is conceptually and definitively separated from work. This book argues against such a separation, countering the prevailing ideology of domesticity with a series of architectural projects that illustrate alternative approaches. Less a monograph than a treatise, richly illustrated, the book combines historical research and design proposals to reenvision home as a cooperative structure in which it is possible to live and work and in which labor is socialized beyond the family—freeing inhabitants from the sense of property and the burden of domestic labor. The projects aim to move the house beyond the dichotomous logic of male/female, husband/wife, breadwinner/housewife, and private/public. They include the reinvention of single-room occupancy as a new model for affordable housing; the reimagining of the simple tower-and-plinth prototype as host to a multiplicity of work activities and enlivening street life; and a plan for a modular, adaptable structure meant to house a temporary dweller. All of these design projects conceive of the house not as a commodity, the form of which is determined by its exchange value, but as an infrastructure defined by its use value.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond Dichotomies examines literary texts, cultural production, and concrete local practices within the context of modernity and globalization by focusing on the ways in which some societies confront the complexity of cultures reflected in new forms of knowledge, narratives, and subjectivities. The contributors explore how particular societies negotiate the relations between the global and the local, and use a geographical, comparative perspective combined with an interdisciplinary approach to offer a diversity of views and illuminate the cultural impact of globalization on different societies around the world: Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. These societies face complex questions regarding people's histories, identities, and cultures that embody the ambivalence, contradictions, and anxieties generated by the process of globalization. The contributors provide a compelling conclusion for a rethinking and reconfiguration of cultures and intercultural relations in today's global world in which dichotomized representations coexist with a discourse of globalization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Doubt is is a book about letting go - surrendering our constant strivings for more knowledge, more ideas about right and wrong, and more tools by which we can judge ourselves and others. Drawing from biblical traditions, Buddhism, Taoism, 12-step recovery wisdom, New Age/New Thought teachings, and the author's experience in the academic study of religion, it offers a spirituality aimed toward becoming authentically human. It asserts that alternative ways of knowing - namely, love and meditative awareness - are necessary to help individuals and communities transcend the limiting and limited capacities of their thinking minds. These ways of knowing are essential aspects of walking a pathway not based on dogmatism, rigidity, or static ideas of truth - one that is instead open to change, questioning, and continual transformation. The Great Doubt is more than just a book; it is a journey. Throughout, it not only posits ideas ("normal" book writing), but also intersperses personal reflections on the writing process itself. These reflections allow the reader to journey with the author as a real human being engaged in real human experiences - hope, fear, doubt, uncertainty. The goal of these reflections is to embody something of the spiritual path to which the book invites its readers - a path of authenticity, self-acceptance, love, and surrender.
