Book excerpt: This book, which accompanies a traveling exhibition organized by the Institute of Contemporary Art at the Maine College of Art, in Portland, Maine, is the first comprehensive publication on Ude's photography. The book contains photographs of the installations "Beyond Decorum", "Uses of Evidence", and "Project Rear"; several series, including Cover Girls, Uli, and Celluloid; and photographs from his magazine aRUDE. The book also includes essays by Lauri Firstenberg, Kobena Mercer, Olu Oguibe, Valerie Steele, Octavio Zaya, and Ike Ude himself, as well as an interview with Ude conducted by Okwui Enwezor. The reader meets Ude the artist, editor, dandy, and aesthete. In his writing, Ude speaks of the futility of stereotypes, and in his photography, he brings to life the image of the artist in a plenitude of guises.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American abstract expressionist painter Barnett Newman famously declared in 1948 that the impulse of modern art is to destroy beauty. Not long after that, Andy Warhol was reconciling the world of art with the world of everyday life, painting soup cans and soda bottles. In this book, Federico Vercellone provides an account of the decline of beauty as a Platonic ideal from early German Romanticism to the twentieth century. He traces this intellectual trajectory from Goethe, Dilthey, and Nietzsche, through modernism and the avant-garde move ment, to the work of Adorno and Heidegger. Rather than the death or destruction of beauty, Vercellone argues instead that beauty in the twentieth century came back to live in reality and everyday life. He suggests this is a new edition of the classical ideal rather than an abandonment of it, and further makes the case for the ecological significance of this orientation and outlook.

He is best known for his two longest works, ‘War and Peace’ and ‘Anna Karenina’, commonly regarded as among the finest novels ever written. During his later years, Tolstoy also achieved world renown as a moral and religious teacher. His doctrine of non-resistance to evil had an important influence on Gandhi. Some viewed him as the embodiment of nature and pure vitality, others saw him as the incarnation of the world’s conscience, while all regarded him as a living symbol of the search for life’s meaning. This eBook presents Tolstoy’s complete fictional works, with numerous illustrations, rare texts, informative introductions and the usual Delphi bonus material. Book excerpt: "... aspirations to perfection awaken us to our actual imperfection." It is in the space between these aspirations and our inability to achieve them that Grant reflects upon imperfection. Grant argues that an awareness of imperfection, defined as both suffering and the need for justice, drive us to an unrelenting search for perfection, freedom, and self-determination. The twenty-one brief chapters of Imperfection develop this governing idea as it relates to the present situation of the God debate, modern ethnic conflicts, and the pursuit of freedom in relation to the uncertainties of personal identity and the quest for self-determination.

Book excerpt: As social, locative, and mobile media render the intimate public and the public intimate, this volume interrogates how this phenomenon impacts art practice and politics. Contributors bring together the worlds of art and media culture to rethink their intersections in light of participatory social media. By focusing upon the Asia-Pacific region, they seek to examine how regionalism and locality affect global circuits of culture. The book also offers a set of theoretical frameworks and methodological paradigms for thinking about contemporary art practice more generally.
