Book excerpt: Beyond Airline Disruptions challenges the traditional approach to disruption management where disruptions are treated mainly as an operational issue, thereby ignoring their multidimensional aspects. The book explains how to recognise system weaknesses, and how to minimise gaps between plans and reality, and strategy and operations. It also describes how to manage disruptions by focusing on things that really matter, revealing their dependences, and pointing out the importance of cross-functional communication.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flight disruptions continue to thrive unnoticed, invisibly eroding airline profitability and causing growing passenger dissatisfaction. This is especially critical at airports where traffic expansion outstrips airport capacities. Hampered by legacy information systems, management practices and organisational detachments, decision makers across the industry have little or no understanding of the multiple causes of disruptions and their implications. Consequently, their actions are focused on resolving local problems without being synchronised at system level. As problematic as they are, disruptions create opportunities for learning about system interactions, a solid and appropriate foundation for resolving complex industry issues. Beyond Airline Disruptions explains how airlines can become more competitive by utilising unexplored potential for gradual, consistent and measurable improvements, centred around cost and quality of operational performance. It describes practical methods and techniques essential for turning these ideas into daily practices. This second, revised edition features updated content that introduces a fresh approach to airline management and decision making, more in line with future industry needs. It bridges the gaps between strategy and operations and inspires collaboration between airlines, airports, ATC, service providers and regulators to bring longer-lasting benefits not only for industry participants and passengers, but also for the economy, society and the environment.

Book excerpt: Despite airlines' tremendous efforts to streamline their operations to minimise controllable costs and improve flight punctuality, system inefficiencies are continuously on the increase. They inevitably lead to a higher number of operational disruptions, and consequently unforeseen losses. Beyond Airline Disruptions addresses this issue by taking a wider, more strategic perspective. By focusing on prevention rather than operational fire-fighting, and laying out the hidden aspects of operational disruptions, this book reveals the significant unexploited potential for cost savings and improvements in on-time performance. It explains for the first time what operational disruptions really are, describes their costs, tangible and intangible causes, and supports the creation of strategies for decreasing system inefficiencies and minimising the risks of operational disruptions.

Book excerpt: Is flying an irreplaceable part of 21st-century life? Can businesses succeed in a globalised world without international air travel? What about 'love miles' – visiting friends and family overseas? Architect and writer Chris Watson grew up in an airline family, passionate about aviation and how it allows us to explore the world, share knowledge and create more diverse communities. But this freedom has come at a cost for the environment. Aviation is a significant factor in climate change - and one that's been steadily growing in both developed and undeveloped countries, burning fossil fuels and emitting harmful greenhouse gases. Flying is never zero-carbon, so can we reduce it, or even do without it? Fourteen remarkable travellers from around the world share their stories with Chris about how they came to the conclusion that reducing their air travel was necessary to lower their personal emissions. From backgrounds as diverse as commercial, professional, academic, NGOs, literature and science, they have found easy and better ways of living and working, saving what few flights they do take for emergencies and 'love miles'. Their stories look at how our modern, globalised world offers more alternatives to keep in touch with people around the world without contributing to the aviation industry's ever-increasing emissions. Filled with success stories and practical guidance to help people make more informed decisions, this book is a must-read for any frequent flyer - or for anyone involved in a global business. Beyond Flying demonstrates that even the toughest of environmental challenges can be addressed.

Book excerpt: Many business sectors have been, and are being, forced to compete with new competitors-disrupters of some sort-who have found new ways to create and deliver new value for customers often through the use of technology that is coupled with a new underlying production or business model, and/or a broad array of partners, including, in some cases, customers themselves. Think about the disruption created by Apple by the introduction of the iPod and iTunes, and by Netflix within the entertainment sectors using partners within the ecosystem; think of Uber that didn’t build an app around the taxi business but rather built a mobility business around the app to improve customer experience. Airline Industry considers whether the airline industry is poised for disruptive innovations from inside or outside of the industry. Although airlines have a long history of continuous improvements and innovation, few of their innovations can be classified as disruptive innovations. The few disruptive innovations that did emerge were facilitated, for example by new technology (jet aircraft) and government policy (deregulation). Now there are new forces in play-customers who expect to receive products that are more personalized and experience-based throughout the entire journey, new customer interfaces (via social media), advanced information systems and analytics, financially powerful airlines based in emerging nations, and the rise of unencumbered entrepreneurs who think differently as well as platform-focused integrators.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In total passenger miles, air travel has never been more popular. But as any frequent flyer knows, air travel problems are growing even faster - long lines, lost luggage, overbooking, flight delays, and serious safety issues. And instead of doing something about it, the traveling public seems simply to be sitting down, buckling in, and allowing itself to be treated like sheep. But it doesn't have to be this way. There are solutions to our air travel problems, real solutions that can make real differences. And they don't require 15 years to implement. With decades of experience in civil aviation and policy, Drs. George Donohue and Russell Shaver are well qualified to assess the problems in the system and offer responsible, workable solutions. Dr. Donohue, the current Director of the Center for Air Transportation Systems Research and a Professor of Systems Engineering at George Mason University (GMU), has extensive high-level experience at the Federal Aviation Administration and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Dr.Shaver, formerly a senior RAND Corporation research analyst and now a visiting research fellow at GMU, served as chief scientist for policy analysis at the MITRE Center for Advanced Aviation System Development. The stories they tell are compelling. There are high-profile horror stories - passengers stranded for hours on the tarmac, flights cancelled for 'bad weather' when there's not a drop of rain anywhere near the flight path - as well as an overall sense of apathy and obstructionism among those responsible for managing the industry. Interestingly, these problems are not the inevitable result of the size or complexity of the U.S. system. Air transportation in Europe, with almost identical air traffic control systems and safety standards, is far better.Amsterdam moves 30 per cent more passengers than Newark, but the average flight delay is an order of magnitude lower. In addition, a European Passenger's Bill of Rights - giving distressed passengers the right to substantial and immediate compensation - has been a powerful incentive for non-U.S. airlines to maintain their schedules. So just how did we get where we are in the U.S. system today?Donohue and Shaver cite multiple reasons that have combined to create the chaos we now face. These causes include airline deregulation, multiple governmental agencies with no central oversight or responsibility, multiple corporate entities with conflicting agendas, and a technologically outdated air traffic control system. Even more importantly, there seems to be a complete absence of advocacy for the customer - the passengers. The authors also explain that our air travel problems, if left unaddressed, are on a direct course to greatly impact the overall U.S. economy and harm our global competitiveness. In 2006 alone, delays and cancellations cost U.S. travelers an estimated $3.2 billion. And in 2004 and 2005, the U.S. tourism industry is estimated to have lost $98 billion in revenue due to our air travel mess.Fortunately, Donohue and Shaver don't leave us in this state of chaos. Their provocative analysis not only identifies the causes and extent of the problems, but also provides us with a course heading to put us on the path to recovery. The solutions they propose include holding the government decision-makers responsible, expanding the capacity of airports and airplanes, modernizing the air traffic control system, and implementing what the authors call the '30 per cent solution' to significantly reduce congestion. In short, this book should be read by every airline passenger traveling in or through the United States. As a country, we simply can't afford to let the chaos continue.
