Book excerpt: DIVA thrilling and irreverent memoir about the transformation of the advertising business from the 1980s to today /divDIV/divDIVRichard Kirshenbaum was born to sell. Raised in a family of Long Island strivers, this future advertising titan was just a few years old when his grandfather first taught him that a Cadillac is more than a car, and that if you can’t have a Trinitron you might as well not watch TV. He had no connections when he came to Madison Avenue, but he possessed an outrageous sense of humor that would make him a millionaire./divDIV /divDIVIn 1987, at the age of twenty-six, Richard put his savings on the line to launch his own agency with partner Jonathan Bond, and within a year, had transformed it from a no-name firm into the go-to house for cutting-edge work. Kirshenbaum and Bond pioneered guerilla marketing by purchasing ad space on fruit, spray-painting slogans on the sidewalk, and hiring actors to order the Hennessy martini in nightclubs. They were the bad boys of Madison Avenue—a firm where a skateboarding employee once bowled over an important client—but backed up their madness with results./divDIV /divDIVPacked with business insight, marketing wisdom, and a cast of characters ranging from Princess Diana to Ed McMahon, this memoir is as bold, as breathtaking, and as delightful as Richard himself./div

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to be what every marketing manager needs to know about marketing in today?s competitive markets. The idea was born out of repeated comments from IMD clients that there were gaps in the ?classic? literature where innovations in practice had moved ahead of the discipline at an academic level. Each chapter takes a subject that can be defined as being new or relatively new (for instance value chain marketing, marketing through collaboration with customers, and two-way brand building) and illustrates how new thinking has led to innovations in practice. The book is full of examples of real-world companies who have dealt effectively with the emerging issues, and others who have not. Each chapter ends with managerial highlights and actionable summaries.

Book excerpt: Are you interested in learning how to create companies people love to love? If you want to be that company people love to love—the one that people can’t wait to tell others about—you will find this book both inspirational and informative. Beyond Sizzle answers how branding, reimagined as an approach to management, can be a force for engaging your most important resource—people—to build your most valuable asset: your reputation. This book will ring true to anyone who wants to be that company customers, employees and the world can’t wait to tell others about! People are increasingly looking beyond the sizzle of product and service advertising to the substance of the companies behind the image. As the conversations about purpose move from the margins to the mainstream, it’s clear that this once-fringe business perspective, often associated with Birkenstocks and granola, now has a seat at the boardroom table. Award-winning management strategist Dr. Mona Amodeo brings together the best practices of change management, marketing, and communications to give readers an actionable process for creating brands that matter—organizations that are redefining workplaces, reimagining customer experiences, and creating innovative products and services that are building healthier, more sustainable communities—in turn, creating a better world for us all. If you are an entrepreneurial thinker ready to embrace the opportunity to prosper economically by having a positive impact on people, communities, and the world; a game changer courageous enough to challenge the status quo by designing and leading organizations as brands that matter; or a leader who wants to make choices that leave the world better than you found it, this book is for you. Readers who have enjoyed the works of Wally Olins, Dr. Mary Jo Hatch, Simon Sinek and books like The Brand Flip will benefit from Mona’s approach on how to reach beyond philosophy and platitudes to a roadmap for transforming organizations into brands that matter to customers, employees and the world. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taboos are much more than just a synonym of ‘forbidden’. Proof of the concept’s complexity can be found in the way ads often try to hide the taboo inherent to their products or, conversely, in the way certain taboo readings are foregrounded on purpose in other ads. This volume shows why and how that happens, using print and television ads to exemplify (a) the elaborate strategies used by ads for certain products to cleverly hide the taboo inherent to them, and (b) the deliberate recourse to taboo references in ads for products that do not present any taboo connotation. The linguistic analysis undertaken takes into account the different modes (verbal language, music, sound effects, moving and static images) that convey meaning in ads. Taboo is very often conveyed or disguised through one of the channels while the others play the opposite role, thus achieving a balance that prevents the ad from being too obscure to be understood or too daring for the general public to accept it. For this comprehensive approach, concepts are drawn from different disciplines: textual and semiotic analysis from linguistics, theories of taboo from anthropology, and background to advertising from media studies.

Book excerpt: What the Bleep Do We Know!? is the biggest New Age movie phenomenon . . . EVER! This outrageous film plunges you into a world where quantum uncertainty is demonstrated—where neurological processes and perceptual shifts are engaged and lived by its protagonist—where everything is alive, and reality is changed by every thought. What the Bleep Do We Know!? gives voice to the modern-day radical souls of science, bringing their genius to millions. What the Bleep Do We Know!? says that science and spirituality are not different modes of thought, but are in fact describing the same thing. And it brings the power back to the individual man and woman as it demonstrates creation as the god-like capacity of every individual. In Beyond the Bleep, Alexandra Bruce illuminates the personalities and teachings of the physicists, neurologists, anesthesiologists, physicians, spiritual teachers, mystics, and scholars in the film, as well as the filmmakers, helping the reader sort through their wilder and woollier theories with simple explanations of the cutting-edge science on which they are based. The phenomenon of the movie is only just beginning, spreading outwards from the yoga studios and health food stores of the Pacific Northwest across America and the world. There is a huge demand for more information on the topics presented in the film; Beyond the Bleep is the place to start.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emancipation, manumission, and complex legalities surrounding slavery led to a number of women of color achieving a measure of freedom and prosperity from the 1600s through the 1800s. These black women held property in places like Suriname and New Orleans, headed households in Brazil, enjoyed religious freedom in Peru, and created new selves and new lives across the Caribbean. Beyond Bondage outlines the restricted spheres within which free women of color, by virtue of gender and racial restrictions, carved out many kinds of existences. Although their freedom--represented by respectability, opportunity, and the acquisition of property--always remained precarious, the essayists support the surprising conclusion that women of color often sought and obtained these advantages more successfully than their male counterparts.
