Book excerpt: This book describes in detail two kinds of models that simulate the dispersion of radionuclides in the sea. Biases have a strong impact on the predictable skill and the structures of the model predicted patterns in the tropical Atlantic Ocean. These biases and the related effects are presented as well as the atmospheric teleconnections between the tropical Atlantic and the African continent. Special focus is given to recent developments in the nitrogen cycle in the open ocean and the new challenges that have arisen from these advancements. This book also provides a review of the history, geography, and climate of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, as well as the role they play in natural disasters. A review of the tsunami hazard along the coastal area of the Gulf of Bengal is explored and the seismicity of the Indian Ocean area. The Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) and its affects, such as monsoon strength over the Indian subcontinent, climatic extremes and socio-economic hardship throughout the tropical Indian Ocean region are presented. This book considers a selection of statistical time series models to analyze and predict the IOD. Finally, using a data-assimilative model of the North Indian assimilating altimetry, the seasonal and inter-annual variability of the meridional heat fluxes in the Indian Ocean are explored.

Book excerpt: Long-distance migration of peoples have been a central if little understood factor in global integration. The essays in this collection contribute to a new history of world migrations, written by specialists of particular areas of the world. Collectively these essays point towards a shift from the regional migrations of individual seas and oceans of the early modern era toward nineteenth-century labor migrations that connected the Pacific and Indian to the Atlantic Oceans. Detailed case studies demonstrate the importance of human migration in the development, consolidation and critique of empire-building, theories of race, modern capitalism, and large-scale commercial agriculture and industry on every continent.

Book excerpt: Ocean as Method presents a new way of thinking about the humanities and the social sciences. It explores maritime connections in social and humanistic research and puts forward an alternative to national histories and area studies. As global warming and rising sea levels ring alarm bells across the world, the chapters in the volume argue that it is time to think through oceans to realign discourses which better understand our future. The volume: • Engages with the paradigms of oceanic narratives to identify connections between continents through trade, migration, and economic processes, thinking beyond the artificial distinctions between the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans; • Discusses oceanic travel accounts by Muslim travellers to counter the idea that the colonial era was marked by European travel to Asia and Africa, without a counterflow of “native travel”; •Examines the connections between South Africa, South Asia, and South East Asia through histories of Indian indenture and the slave trade, and engages with the idea of the ocean and enforced movement; •Compares and connects recent scholarship in the social sciences and the humanities centring the ocean to break away from inherited paradigms which have shaped world history so far. As a unique transdisciplinary collaboration, this volume will be of much interest to scholars and researchers of history, especially oceanic history, historiography, critical theory, literature, geography, and Global South studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Indian Ocean world has a rich history of socio-economic and cultural exchanges across time and space. This book and its companion, Merchants and Ports in the Indian Ocean World, explore these connections around the wider Indian Ocean world. The book examines the many overlapping linkages that existed from the early modern period and into the colonial era. It offers a clear understanding of the economic networks that extended across the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic during the 19th century. With a critical historical lens, the volume discusses themes like the opium trade in the Malay-Indonesian Archipelago – the biggest opium trade market at the time; the Safavid mission to Siam; and the economic relationship between Pondicherry and West Africa, via France. Rich in archival material, this book will be of interest for scholars and researchers of Indian Ocean history, maritime history, Indian history, economic and commercial history, South Asian history, and social history, anthropology, and trade relations in general.
