Book excerpt: Originally published in 1990, this book focuses on the challenge to Jewish identity posed by the conflicting forces of enlightenment, emancipation, modern political antisemitism, and secular ideologies like Zionism, nationalism, and socialism. At the heart of his discussion stands the intense, tortured, and ultimately tragic encounter of Jews with Germans and Austrians. He also deals at length with the new problems of Jewish cultural and political identity posed by the existence of the state of Israel and its embattled position among the nations. In the course of the analysis the book looks at the tragedy of assimilation in central Europe, with the optimistic dream of Enlightenment and Bildung coming to a climax in the nightmare of racial antisemitism and the Holocaust. He explores the ambivalent relationship of the Jews with the European Left, showing how many Jewish intellectuals found a new political home in radical and socialist movements, though these movements often retained negative stereotypes of Jews and Judaism and exhibited a fierce opposition to the maintenance of any separate Jewish identity. The role of Zionism is discussed and the more recent challenges to its legitimacy examined.

Book Synopsis Journey to Redemption Or Perdition? by : Rosa Clark
Download or read book Journey to Redemption Or Perdition? written by Rosa Clark and published by Publishamerica Incorporated. This book was released on 2005-10-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journey to Redemption or Perdition? On the surface it focuses on an old theme of good vs. evil, but it is much more philosophical than that. Derdekea, for loving Lucifer, became a fallen archangel; her penance, to roam the earth as protector of mankind. On her journey she encounters Joseph, who is not what he seems. Together they continue on a vaguely understood, surmised common path. Many signs are misread and misconstrued, due to neither one of them being aware of the Creators ultimate plan. Only when they are confronted by Lilith (demoness sworn to the destruction of mankind) and Leviathan (demon of the watery world), Satans emissaries on Earth, do they begin to make sense of the puzzle, only to be confronted with another maze within. The story is filled with celestial beings, magical characters, mutated creatures and lost, tortured souls, which cannot be aptly credited in this short analysis.

Book excerpt: During Reconstruction, an attempt was made in the South to return its politics to the two-party system that it had experienced during the Jacksonian era. This book is a study of that experiment in party formation. As such, it attempts to explain how this system operated, what brought about its collapse, and what took its place. After all, Reconstruction was not embarked upon solely to round out and settle the sectional conflict. Far more important was its purpose of establishing a new political order, even a new economic direction, for the South, and that is what this book is about. -- from Introduction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Will all evil finally turn to good, or does some evil remain stubbornly opposed to God and God's goodness? Will even the devil be redeemed? Addressing a theological issue of perennial interest, this comprehensive book (in two volumes) surveys the history of Christian universalism from the second to the twenty-first century and offers an interpretation of how and why universalist belief arose. The author explores what the church has taught about universal salvation and hell and critiques universalism from a biblical, philosophical, and theological standpoint. He shows that the effort to extend grace to everyone undermines the principle of grace for anyone.
