Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China has become one of the world's leading destinations for foreign direct investment (FDI), following the Chinese government's economic reforms and decision to open up foreign trade and investment opportunities. FDI has been a key factor in promoting rapid economic growth and technological progress, although there remains substantial potential for a greater inflow of long-term, high-technology, high-value-added FDI from OECD countries. This study reviews developments and suggests policy options designed to improve FDI inflows further. This will require structural reform aspects, including greater legal transparency and streamlined investment approval procedures, good corporate governance, effective competition policy and a sound financial system.
Book Synopsis The Power of Renewables by : Chinese Academy of Engineering
Download or read book The Power of Renewables written by Chinese Academy of Engineering and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-01-29 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States and China are the world's top two energy consumers and, as of 2010, the two largest economies. Consequently, they have a decisive role to play in the world's clean energy future. Both countries are also motivated by related goals, namely diversified energy portfolios, job creation, energy security, and pollution reduction, making renewable energy development an important strategy with wide-ranging implications. Given the size of their energy markets, any substantial progress the two countries make in advancing use of renewable energy will provide global benefits, in terms of enhanced technological understanding, reduced costs through expanded deployment, and reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions relative to conventional generation from fossil fuels. Within this context, the U.S. National Academies, in collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), reviewed renewable energy development and deployment in the two countries, to highlight prospects for collaboration across the research to deployment chain and to suggest strategies which would promote more rapid and economical attainment of renewable energy goals. Main findings and concerning renewable resource assessments, technology development, environmental impacts, market infrastructure, among others, are presented. Specific recommendations have been limited to those judged to be most likely to accelerate the pace of deployment, increase cost-competitiveness, or shape the future market for renewable energy. The recommendations presented here are also pragmatic and achievable.
Book Synopsis China’s Aid, Trade and Investment to Africa by : Wang Xinying
Download or read book China’s Aid, Trade and Investment to Africa written by Wang Xinying and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-09-30 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adopting perspectives from development economics and international relations, this book researches the ongoing cooperation between China and African countries and the interactive system of China’s aid, trade and investment to and with Africa. In reviewing the history and development of China-Africa relations from the founding of the People’s Republic to the new century, the book analyses the achievements, opportunities and challenges of the bilateral relationship and reflects on the public-private partnership model in the context of international development assistance. Coupled with experiences from the US, Japan and the EU in the field of foreign aid, trade and investment as well as case studies from China, the core chapters delve into China-Africa cooperation in terms of aid, trade and investment and proposes to build an interactive and coordinated mechanism of China’s aid, trade and investment in Africa. The author argues that China-Africa cooperation goes beyond reciprocal benefits, offering a possible model for South-South Cooperation and a potential model for balanced and sustainable development within the world economy. This book will appeal to researchers, students and policy makers interested in Chinese politics and foreign policy, African politics, international relations, international diplomacy and the world economy.
Download or read book Global China written by Tarun Chhabra and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2021-06-22 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global implications of China's rise as a global actor In 2005, a senior official in the George W. Bush administration expressed the hope that China would emerge as a “responsible stakeholder” on the world stage. A dozen years later, the Trump administration dramatically shifted course, instead calling China a “strategic competitor” whose actions routinely threaten U.S. interests. Both assessments reflected an underlying truth: China is no longer just a “rising” power. It has emerged as a truly global actor, both economically and militarily. Every day its actions affect nearly every region and every major issue, from climate change to trade, from conflict in troubled lands to competition over rules that will govern the uses of emerging technologies. To better address the implications of China's new status, both for American policy and for the broader international order, Brookings scholars conducted research over the past two years, culminating in a project: Global China: Assessing China's Growing Role in the World. The project is intended to furnish policy makers and the public with hard facts and deep insights for understanding China's regional and global ambitions. The initiative draws not only on Brookings's deep bench of China and East Asia experts, but also on the tremendous breadth of the institution's security, strategy, regional studies, technological, and economic development experts. Areas of focus include the evolution of China's domestic institutions; great power relations; the emergence of critical technologies; Asian security; China's influence in key regions beyond Asia; and China's impact on global governance and norms. Global China: Assessing China's Growing Role in the World provides the most current, broad-scope, and fact-based assessment of the implications of China's rise for the United States and the rest of the world.

Book Synopsis China's International Investment Strategy by : Julien Chaisse
Download or read book China's International Investment Strategy written by Julien Chaisse and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2019-02-21 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since China adopted its 'open door' policy in 1978, which altered its development strategy from self-sufficiency to active participation in the world market, its goal has remained unchanged: to assist the readjustment of China's economy, to coordinate its modernization programs, and to improve its quality of life. With the 1997 launch of the 'Going Global' policy, an outward focus regarding foreign investment was added, to circumvent trade barriers and improve the competitiveness of Chinese firms. In order to accommodate inward and outward investment, China's participation in the international investment regime has underpinned its efforts to join multilateral investment-related legal instruments and conclude international investment agreements. This collection, compiled by award-winning scholar Professor Julien Chaisse, explores the three distinct tracks of China's investment policy and strategy: bilateral agreements including those with the US and the EU; regional agreements including the Free Trade Area of the Asia Pacific; and global initiatives, spear-headed by China's presidency of the G20 and its 'Belt and Road initiative'. The book's overarching topic is whether these three tracks compete with each other, or whether they complement one another - a question of profound importance for the country's political and economic future and world investment governance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In China, social development has fallen far behind economic development. This book looks at why this is the case, and poses the question of whether the conditions, structures and institutions that have locked China into unbalanced development are changing to pave the way for the next stage of development. Based on an empirical examination of ideological, structural and institutional transformations that have shaped China’s development experiences, the book analyses China’s reform and development in the social domain, including pension, healthcare, public housing, ethnic policy, and public expenditure on social programs. The book moves beyond descriptive analyses to understand the role of broader changes in shaping and redefining the pattern of development in China.

Book Synopsis Evaluation of "Improving farmer livelihoods in the dry zone through improved livestock health, productivity and marketing" by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book Evaluation of "Improving farmer livelihoods in the dry zone through improved livestock health, productivity and marketing" written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2020-04-01 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The project aim was to sustainably improve the livelihoods and food security of communities and the poor and vulnerable in six townships in the Central Dry Zone (CDZ) of Myanmar through improving livestock health, productivity, and marketing. The project is highly relevant as livestock are critical to people’s livelihoods in the area. It was evaluated as being efficiently delivered with very significant benefits being provided in developing livestock policies with good sustainability and identifying effective new technologies to promote livestock production in the CDZ. Of note, project efficiency was evaluated as being high with an adaptive approach taken as priorities changed and opportunities developed, and with strong government support providing considerable staff and other resources. At the time of the evaluation, the impact of the project remains limited as little extension work has been undertaken to improve livestock production practices and many of the policies being developed are yet to be finalized. However, the project has laid down a strong basis for the improvement in livestock policies and improved production practices and Government has taken strong ownership of these. The impact of the project will be enhanced over time as policies are consolidated and further extension of the new technologies undertaken.
