Performance measurement systems are a key instrument of subsidiary controlling. The correct use of performance measures combined with the right incentives can help reduce information asymmetry between the corporate centre and subsidiaries and at the same time ensure an orientation toward corporate objectives on all levels. In this book, the concept of performance measurement systems in the context of subsidiary controlling is explained. One focus is the thorough discussion of financial performance measures and their use in subsidiary controlling. Particularities in subsidiary controlling are for instance the determination of divisional cost-of-capital for value-based management and the aggregation of measures to the corporate level. The second focus is the design of performance measurement systems depending on certain characteristics of the company and its environment. It is emphasised that there is not one right way of designing controlling systems. Instead, they have to be aligned to certain situational variables such as strategy, organisational structure or environmental uncertainty. For example, managers of business units that pursue differentiation strategies should be evaluated by more non-financial performance measures than managers of business units with a low-cost strategy. The book can be used as guidance for practitioners concerned with the design of performance measurement systems - for example corporate controllers, management consultants or investment managers in holding companies. It also provides a starting point for academics that intend to conduct further research on related topics.

As Neely, Adams and Kennerley (2002) claim, this is not far-reaching enough. A company must consider more stakeholders (e.g. the supplier, the employee and further more) as their approach of the performance prism explains. But, Neely and his colleagues did not explain in detail how to apply their performance prism to the departmental level, and how to connect it to a remuneration system. Here, the actual book gives brand-new ideas and tools for a consistent application of the developed framework to the departmental level. This book concentrates especially on the stakeholder approach of Neely, Adams and Kennerley which will be improved by the ‘stakeholder matrix’, and connected by the development of the ‘multidimensional performance appraisal table’ to performance evaluation. This is the second book of Erik Wödl regarding performance measurement.

The banking sector is one important part of a service economy. With regard to the globalisation the banking industry still faces radical changes. This paper is especially addressed to the business operations of WestLB AG (WestLB), a major German bank that primarily operates both national and international business-to-business (B2B) banking. WestLB operates in a partnership with the savings banks, which run the business-to-customer (B2C) banking of the mass market for private customers (esp. retail banking). In addition, WestLB s subsidiaries Readybank and Weberbank attend to private clients, whereas Readybank runs bulk-lending business and Weberbank offers private wealth management to German customers. In particular, this reading explores a number of relevant questions within the scope of well-managed marketing and its controlling. Latest organisational restructuring within the bank s marketing organisation have encouraged a rethink of how to better manage marketing communications to the clients and where to spend its marketing investments. One important change means that one worldwide marketing budget has been applied to the entire bank. This is the second largest departmental cost budget after information technology to be controlled at WestLB. All these present circumstances are described in detail in a separate chapter including organisational questions, marketing teams, customer and product groups. Motivation: Due to the homogeneity of the offered finance products, it is especially difficult for banks to position and distinguish themselves from the competition.
