Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faculty recruitment is a major expense for colleges and universities, and schools devote a considerable amount of their resources to the hiring process. But many of these institutions fail to devote the same attention to retaining college professors. We’ve learned through many studies that it’s far less expensive to retain a student you have than to recruit a new one. Why is this lesson not also applied to the college faculty? This book addresses why higher education currently has a faculty retention problem and then explores the strategies needed to address that problem. But now all faculty members are alike. Minority faculty members have their own retention challenges, as do highly competitive researchers, part-time and temporary faculty members who excel at teaching, and other ley groups. The best ways to retain the junior faculty are not necessarily the best ways to retain mid-career and senior faculty. By examining best practices currently in place in higher education, and then combining those insights with research conducted in the corporate world, the book encourages colleges and universities to develop a culture of retention that applies to students and faculty members alike.

Book excerpt: [This book] provides tools and insights for university and college administrators to use when evaluating changes in retirement policy, and it presents valuable information in the form of case studies concerning changes in retention policies and retirement policies. Lisa M. Dickson, Industrial and Labor Relations Review This volume, a collection of papers presented at the 2004 TIAA-CREF Institute conference on higher education, contains many excellent chapters. John Heuer, Journal of Pension Economics and Finance This book enlightens the reader about two important policy issues, health care provision and retirement plans, by addressing both broad macro issues and specific concerns of higher education administrators. Such content is both valuable and practical for the concerned higher education researcher and administrator. Marc Kaulisch, The Review of Higher Education Attracting and retaining highly qualified faculty is essential to maintaining productivity at institutions of higher education. Colleges and universities are at a critical juncture in their history as they attempt to achieve their teaching and research goals. This volume examines some of the most pressing employment and compensation issues confronting academic administrators. Contributors discuss topics such as: ageing of faculty, changing economic conditions and shifts in faculty employment patterns, rapid increases in health care costs and trends in retiree health insurance, and adoption of phased and early retirement programs. The volume also includes a series of case studies on how individual universities are confronting these challenges. Institutions in these case studies include: Syracuse University, the University of North Carolina, the University of California, institutions in the Association of New American Colleges, and other colleges and universities included in several surveys and research projects. This timely volume will appeal to academic administrators at colleges and universities in the US and internationally as they face the common challenges of rising employment costs, faculty aging and global competition. Researchers interested in the future of higher education, economics, and the academic labor market in general will find this a valuable addition to their library.

Book excerpt: This book explores the rich history and current state of the Latina, Latino, Latinx, Latine, Hispanic, or of Spanish Origin+ (LHS+) community’s representation, activism, and leadership within American medicine. It meets the demand for a reference that highlights both the underrepresentation and growth of the LHS+ community in medicine, especially as the LHS+ population now represents the largest non-white ethnic group in the United States. It examines the LHS+ community’s unique health issues and disparities, its ongoing efforts to address such health issues, and its approaches and challenges to developing generations of physicians and healthcare leaders. An Open-Access reference and Sustainable Development Goals Series volume, this book serves as an informative and inspirational resource for educational programming, drafting of policies and procedures, and institutional strategic planning. Across 16 chapters, LHS+ community members and leaders share their unique experiences in pursuing medical careers, using compelling narratives crafted to inspire more LHS+-identified college students to become healthcare professionals and leaders themselves. Additionally, chapters describe several ways in which non-LHS+ identified colleagues can better prepare themselves and their respective institutions to advance health equity for LHS+ communities, support LHS+ learners at all stages of medical education, and bolster current and future LHS+ faculty and senior academic leaders. Latino, Hispanic, or of Spanish Origin+ Identified Student Leaders in Medicine: Recognizing More Than 50 Years of Presence, Activism, and Leadership is a unique and timely book meant to unite and empower current and future physicians through service, mentorship, and education for the benefit of historically underserved communities in the U.S. and beyond.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This IAMSE Manual, Mentoring Across the Continuum, is a product of its co-editors' and authors’ lifetime work in mentoring faculty and studying the impact of this mentoring. The book defines the field of academic medicine as highly dependent on finding and relating to mentors at virtually every stage of a doctor's career. It describes and analyzes successful mentor/mentee relationships, examining the authors' personal experiences, as well as a data-driven approach, to explore the many different roles and perspectives on mentoring relationships and ultimately the mentoring culture. The editors look at the data with respect to the success of different strategies in mentoring, as well as different structures of diverse mentoring programs. As well, proven ways to deliver these programs successfully for all professionals who lead mentoring programs or are active participants as mentees. There is a special emphasis on the mentoring of medical educators. However, the themes explored in this book are generalizable beyond the medical educator to include diverse academic roles across the continuum. In particular, enumerating the many specific roles of a mentor beyond just the traditional concepts adds breadth and depth to understanding what can be gained from mentor-mentee relationships. This Manual is a valuable resource for clinicians, educators, and trainees in addition to anyone involved in medical education and progressing through the stages of practicing, teaching, and learning in medicine. This Manual represents a meaningful addition to the literature on this most important professional subject.
