Book Synopsis Efficacy of In-school Suspension Practices in Selected Texas Schools with Character Education Programs by : Mark Randall McDonald

This book was released on 2014 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In-school suspension (ISS) is widely used in schools, but its efficacy in deterring future misbehavior has long been suspect. Early writings on ISS indicate that the programs were expected to have a character-building aspect to them, but such aspects appear to be missing from current ISS programs. Concurrently, an increased emphasis in character education appears evident. This study questioned the extent to which ISS at schools that practice some form of character education promotes the social and academic success of students. To gauge that effectiveness, a qualitative multiple-case study was conducted. Interviews and site visits were conducted at three West Texas schools during the spring semester of the 2013-14 school year. Administrators, teachers, parents, and students were interviewed to determine their perceptions of ISS and its efficacy. Observations and descriptions of the programs as given by participants were compared to those of early writers, including a specific description given by Hayes Mizell (1978), to determine whether ISS was being practiced according to its earlier ideals. The study found that ISS in schools where character education was practiced was moderately effective in promoting the social success of assigned students, but was ineffective in promoting their academic success. Schools in this study were found to partially adhered to the principles espoused by Mizell (1978). Various affective and functional factors could have an impact on ISS efficacy as a punitive measure. Participants were divided on their assessment of ISS. Almost all participants supportive of character education efforts, but many recognized the importance of consistent expectations and reinforcement.

This book was released on 2009-04-01 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will be a guide to assisting disruptive students who are constantly being placed in IN School; Suspension without a road map paved for them to be successful. As a school teacher and administrator for the past 24 years, I have noticed students being placed in ISS Programs without any form of therapeutic treatment designed to assist them. This book reveals research study by various authors who have worked in the education setting through out the United States. The book will be a guide for students who are labeled as repeaters in the ISSP, that the their behaviors can be modified using the counseling handbook. As we try to improve our form of educating young people in America, schools have to cope with classroom behaviors, and violence to make sure no child is left behind in receiving an optimal level of education in the 21st century. The book uses an approach that keeps students in schools and keeps them from receiving OSS as an alternative punishment. Students see OSS as a way of being out of the education setting and being at home without any form of education taking place. This book will assist school officials to guide ISS repeaters in the right direction and prevent obstacles from causing them to excel.
Download or read book Race Manners written by Bruce A. Jacobs and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2011-08-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a plane, a black passenger nervously scrutinizes an Arab–American passenger. In front of a store, a white woman clutches her purse as a black man walks by. In conversation, the topic of race comes up and both people wonder what they are willing to say—and what they are not. Each scenario reveals that how we act and react to each other on a daily basis stems from racial assumptions, biases, and misunderstandings. Some we acknowledge, others we overlook. In the wake of 9/11, confronting race relations in America is as daunting as it is necessary. Race Manners shows us how we can begin a civilized, meaningful dialogue—not with evasive abstractions, but with practicality and candor. Bruce A. Jacobs, a tireless speaker, has traveled the country over the past six years, learning and listening as people reacted to the first edition of this book and told him their own stories. In this newest edition, here is a candid assessment of and guide to improving race relations that offers honest clarity on fear of crime and terrorism, the role of “rage talk media,” the problem with tolerance, race in pop music from Elvis to Eminem and beyond, the “N-word,” and much more.
Book Synopsis LONG-TERM SUSPENSIONS: EFFECTIVE STRATEGIES TO KEEP STUDENTS ENGAGED IN SCHOOLING. by : Andre Smith
Download or read book LONG-TERM SUSPENSIONS: EFFECTIVE STRATEGIES TO KEEP STUDENTS ENGAGED IN SCHOOLING. written by Andre Smith and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the current study was to determine educational leaders' perceptions of effective strategies for keeping long-term suspended students engaged in learning. As school districts struggle with best practices to reduce dropouts and increase graduation rates, they look to ensure that suspended students remain focused on education. A Q-Sort methodology was employed that allowed 40 participants, each a principal of a school district, to sort cards that contained a list of effective strategies. The study involved an investigation of the best practices to keep students engaged while serving a long-term suspension, practices that were developed from the literature as well as from practicing school educators. A set of working strategies was generated for further examination. Educators "sorted" these strategies for quantitative analysis, and a selection was interviewed for qualitative analysis. Finally, data was collected and analyzed from educators regarding their perceptions and experiences of the effective strategies. Findings revealed four emergent factors from the participants' understanding of the most effective strategies for keeping long-term suspended students engaged. Participants valued the importance of a strategy that places students in a separate physical site while serving their suspension, as well as programs that individually support each student to meet their unique needs (Factor One). Additionally, the principals in the study believed that placing an emphasis on building positive adult and peer relationships is an effective strategy to keep long-term suspended students engaged in school, including utilizing outside agencies, social workers, and counselors as needed (Factor Two). Strategies that allow the long-term suspended student to keep pace with their coursework were also believed by the participants to be effective (Factor Three) in allowing for on-time graduation. Finally, principals felt strongly about not giving up their efforts to redirect long-term suspended students' behavior and address individual needs, and were supportive of strategies that remove the long-term suspended student from their base school while maintaining consistent communication with the student, school, and family (Factor Four). Implications and recommendations for practice, policy, and research that emerged from the study are discussed.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Classroom Management by : Carolyn M. Evertson
Download or read book Handbook of Classroom Management written by Carolyn M. Evertson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 1357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classroom management is a topic of enduring concern for teachers, administrators, and the public. It consistently ranks as the first or second most serious educational problem in the eyes of the general public, and beginning teachers consistently rank it as their most pressing concern during their early teaching years. Management problems continue to be a major cause of teacher burnout and job dissatisfaction. Strangely, despite this enduring concern on the part of educators and the public, few researchers have chosen to focus on classroom management or to identify themselves with this critical field. The Handbook of Classroom Management has four primary goals: 1) to clarify the term classroom management; 2) to demonstrate to scholars and practitioners that there is a distinct body of knowledge that directly addresses teachers’ managerial tasks; 3) to bring together disparate lines of research and encourage conversations across different areas of inquiry; and 4) to promote a vigorous agenda for future research in this area. To this end, 47 chapters have been organized into 10 sections, each chapter written by a recognized expert in that area. Cutting across the sections and chapters are the following themes: *First, positive teacher-student relationships are seen as the very core of effective classroom management. *Second, classroom management is viewed as a social and moral curriculum. *Third, external reward and punishment strategies are not seen as optimal for promoting academic and social-emotional growth and self-regulated behavior. *Fourth, to create orderly, productive environments teachers must take into account student characteristics such as age, developmental level, race, ethnicity, cultural background, socioeconomic status, and ableness. Like other research handbooks, the Handbook of Classroom Management provides an indispensable reference volume for scholars, teacher educators, in-service practitioners, and the academic libraries serving these audiences. It is also appropriate for graduate courses wholly or partly devoted to the study of classroom management.

Book Synopsis Reimagining School Discipline for the 21st Century Student by : John A. Williams III
Download or read book Reimagining School Discipline for the 21st Century Student written by John A. Williams III and published by IAP. This book was released on 2022-01-01 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regularly, schools and their personnel enact school disciplinary practices without considering how to harness the engagement of students, practitioners, and communities to enact transformative changes that reduce if not eliminate punitive school discipline approaches. Reimagining School Discipline for the 21st Century centralizes the assets and strengths of historically marginalized students and the professional knowledge of school personnel as possible avenues to implement solutions to eliminate school discipline disproportionality. Rather than redressing the issues of school discipline disproportionality overall, this book examines the existence of school on student groups who, according to research and national and state reports, are afflicted the most: African American, Latinx, Native American, and LGBTQ+ population. A confluence of these identities can exacerbate such disproportionality, which based on the literature decreases the academic growth of students. However, situated within these disparities are opportunities to better and critically engage students based on their cultural, racial/ethnic, and social emotional learning assets. The significant feature of this book lies in its purpose and audience reach. Each chapter was written based on the scholar’s affinity to that student group or practitioner’s affiliation to that specific profession. This provides a genuine perspective and knowledge based on first hand experiences concerning school discipline and applicable approaches to remedy such issues. Additionally, all the chapters articulate the pressing issue of school discipline according to their group, and explicates best-practices to best serve the assets of students in K-12 school settings. As this book is situated, the intended audience is for the following stakeholders, policy makers, social workers, school counselors, school administrators, teachers, and community organizers who want to make impactful and socially-just changes in their school(s) immediately.
Book Synopsis An effective in-school suspension program by : Eduardo Carlos Garcia
Download or read book An effective in-school suspension program written by Eduardo Carlos Garcia and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teachers are often times faced with students that make poor choices. In some cases these students may be suspended from school. Some schools have implemented an in-school suspension program for some of the less severe offences. This allows the student to stay at school so they do not miss any of their school work while maintaining the student in an isolated area. However some ISS programs have not addressed the issue of students repeating their poor behavior. This program is designed to help students make better choices through self-reflection and counseling. At the end of the year the data will analyzed so that further adjustments may be made to deter students from returning to ISS.
