Book excerpt: This book examines the Diablo in detail, starting with Ferruccio Lamborghini's objectives for his eponymous supercar company and his diktat that it eschew racing, which would go on to heavily influence the Diablo's design and development, even though the founder had long since left the company. Each of the model variants is examined in detail, as are the socio-politico-economic factors that that made designing and developing the Diablo imperative and unavoidable , and which forced the Sant' Agata works into making evolutionary modifications as well as introducing radical innovations over the course of the Diablo's long reign. Written by two passionate and deeply knowledgeable owners who for over two decades have run two wedge shaped, spaceframe, Bizzarrini-engined Lamborghini flagships, this book also delves into pre-purchase considerations, the Diablo's known foibles and the value of a pre-purchase inspection, before discussing the buying process, the trials and tribulations of periodic servicing, preventative maintenance, and garaging, after which it shares the sheer elation and exhilaration of actually piloting a Diablo.

Book excerpt: The story of the Diablo, the heir to the Countach, the Lamborghini supercar par excellence of the 1990s. This car took the company from an artisan dimension to one verging on the industrial, so much so as to be the company's first model available in two bodywork variants. This was the car that single-handedly made it through the marque's darkest periods, succeeding in sustaining the company and keeping it alive. This was also the car that was born out of the inventiveness of Luigi Marmiroli and the art of Marcello Gandini, a car that was refined over time so that it always remained close to the changing tastes of its clientele. This book traces the model's technical and industrial genesis, giving voice to several of the protagonists of the time, while also presenting the road tests dedicated to the Diablo by the Italian monthly Quattroruote.
Book Synopsis Washing the Brain Metaphor and Hidden Ideology by : Andrew Goatly
Download or read book Washing the Brain Metaphor and Hidden Ideology written by Andrew Goatly and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2007-01-17 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary metaphor theory has recently begun to address the relation between metaphor, culture and ideology. In this wide-ranging book, Andrew Goatly, using lexical data from his database Metalude, investigates how conceptual metaphor themes construct our thinking and social behaviour in fields as diverse as architecture, engineering, education, genetics, ecology, economics, politics, industrial time-management, medicine, immigration, race, and sex. He argues that metaphor themes are created not only through the universal body but also through cultural experience, so that an apparently universal metaphor such as event-structure as realized in English grammar is, in fact, culturally relative, compared with e.g. the construal of 'cause and effect' in the Algonquin language Blackfoot. Moreover, event-structure as a model is both scientifically reactionary and, as the basis for technological mega-projects, has proved environmentally harmful. Furthermore, the ideologies of early capitalism created or exploited a selection of metaphor themes historically traceable through Hobbes, Hume, Smith, Malthus and Darwin. These metaphorical concepts support neo-Darwinian and neo-conservative ideologies apparent at the beginning of the 21st century, ideologies underpinning our social and environmental crises. The conclusion therefore recommends skepticism of metaphor’s reductionist tendencies.

Book excerpt: For 40 years, Lamborghini has been one of the world's most flamboyant and exotic car marques. Written by a long-term Lamborghini insider, the book tells, for the first time, the real story of the men who kept the Italian company alive, making cars bought by wealthy business executives, show business celebrities, and sports stars. Custodians of Lamborghini have included Chrysler and businessmen in Switzerland and Asia. Now Lamborghini sits alongside Bugatti at Audi, part of the Volkswagen Group. Previous Lamborghini books have been little more than collections of pictures of the cars and technical descriptions, but this one describes the character of the men whose passion for Lamborghini kept the company alive. The book is published in 2004 as the all-new Lamborghini Gallardo goes on sale, 41 years after the original 350GTV burst onto the scene at the Turin auto show.
