It presents a quantitative approach to study the relationship between first-time, full-time student veterans and their non-veteran student counterparts in the area of transition to college life and academic success in the first-year of college. Transition to college life is measured through variables that represent pre-entry attributes, skills gained or lost, and student involvement. The results of the study contribute to the efforts of campus professionals to coordinate services and direct resources in order to better serve and increase the academic success of this population. Using secondary data, the study examines financial stress, prior learning experience, psychological/physical health, skills gained or lost, and student involvement in relationship to academic success. Additionally, the study compares first-year student veterans with comparison groups: traditional first-year students, first-generation first-year students, and non-traditional first-year students. Finally, the study identifies what forms of student involvement work best for student veteran academic success and what pre-entry attribute or skill most influences academic success. The study also explores differences between student veterans from public/private institution types and commuter/residential status.

The purpose of this research study was to explore the college experience of student veterans and identify ways to help them succeed academically. More specifically, this study sought to identify factors that predict the academic success of veterans in their first year of college. The researcher examined veterans’ experiences in college, inside and outside the classroom, in order to identify which engagement activities, if any, influenced their first-term cumulative GPA. The researcher found the following seven variables to be statistically significant predictors of student veterans’ first-term GPA: (a) race, (b) the number of credit hours taken, (c) talking to faculty members about career aspirations, (d) receiving oral feedback from a faculty member about academic performance, (e) attending events on campus, (f) exercising or participating in physical activities, and (g) time spent commuting to class. Increased veteran enrollment has merited examination of the challenges student veterans have encountered at higher education institutions. This study adds to the limited body of knowledge on this topic and contributes to a future plan for the successful education of veterans who attend college.

There are a few existing studies on the skills and abilities soldiers gain while in the military, and even fewer studies on how student veterans can translate their acquired military skills into the academic realm. The purpose of this mixed methods study is to advance the research on student veterans in the community college and the perceptions of their college faculty and staff. Because the existing literature primarily focuses on student veterans' needs, this study aims to challenge the existing deficit models and employ a strengths-based model to provide a new framework for veteran serving institutions. This study provides a new lens, for a deeper understanding of the skills veterans, possess and the ways in which those skills can be capitalized upon and transferred to the academic realm to ensure student veteran success. A closed voluntary and anonymous 55-item survey was distributed to student veterans who volunteered to participate in the study, using Qualtrics, to ensure confidentiality and anonymity. Also, student veterans, English faculty members, and Veteran Resource Center directors were given the opportunity to participate in a one-on-one approximate 30-minute interview with the researcher. The goal was to elicit candid responses about the skills and abilities these students possess, how they transfer them into the academic realm and their perceptions of faculty members' and Veteran Resource Center Directors' attitudes towards student veterans. Results of this study indicate that English faculty and Veteran Resource Center directors' perceptions about student veterans and their acquired skills and abilities are positive, yet, preconceived notions and stereotypes continue to cloud their understanding of student veterans. Findings also indicate that student veterans gained multiple skills in the military and currently use those skills and abilities to succeed academically. An examination of the quantitative and qualitative data suggests there is a great need for the implementation and use of a new model which employs a strengths-based perspective. The researcher proposes the Boots to Books Strengths Model, which uses a strength based lens that informs and impacts the incorporation of military experience and socialization of veterans and their military-acquired skills and abilities in the academic setting; resulting in student veterans' overall academic success, self-efficacy, and sense of belonging.

Using Astin's student involvement theory (1984), which posits the more a student is involved at the university, the more likely the students will be retained and graduate from the university. Much of the research over the past 20 years has been limited to study the impact of one form of involvement has on retention and graduation, while this study combines different forms of involvement and how they impact retention and graduation rates. This study occurs with a first-year cohort entering fall 2012 at a public four-year university in the Pacific Northwest. While considering students' entering characteristics, this study uses multiple analyses to explore how first semester student involvement (Greek life, Recreation center use, working on campus, etc.) affects first semester GPA, first-semester and first-year retention, and graduation rates. Overall findings show first semester GPA is still the best predictor of six-year graduation rates. The study also showed certain types of student involvement impacts first semester GPA. This impact led to the creation of a weighted Student Involvement Index in an attempt to predict six-year graduation rates. Book excerpt: Veterans of the United States military have been attending institutions of higher education dating back to World War II and the passage of the first G.I. Bill in 1944. In 2009, the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill was passed, which has offered student veterans significant assistance in the completion of their postsecondary education. Over one million veterans have attended postsecondary institutions using these benefits. With this recent influx of veteran students, campuses have struggled to respond to their needs. Though a great deal of historical research exists about student veterans, this literature cannot cover all of the challenges that today’s student veterans face. Additionally, much of the research is focused on the transition veterans experience when they exit the military and enter college. Though it is undoubtedly a challenging transition, it is not the only challenge they will face in their college careers. Little research exists regarding how to support this nontraditional population of students after they arrive on campus; similarly, many campus resources are focused on support for incoming and graduating students, and less on support for current students. This study examined how campuses can best support student veterans throughout their college careers. The main research question was, “What type of support services are necessary to retain and ensure the success of student veterans during their time on campus?” A needs assessment model was employed, utilizing quantitative research in the form of a survey and qualitative research in the form of one-on-one-interviews. Survey data was collected from over 300 student veterans, and interviews were conducted with five. The results of this needs assessment suggested that a focus on critical services (such as admissions outreach and benefits guidance) while also providing opportunities for students to connect with each other were critical to the success of student veterans at this particular institution. Though these results cannot necessarily be generalized and applied to all institutions or to all student veterans, this study provides a template for other institutions to conduct their own needs assessments.

Although some studies have addressed the transition from military into postsecondary education, more research is needed to improve our knowledge about the experiences of student veterans and how non-profit higher educational institutions, especially student support services, can better help student veterans succeed. Through the lens of university student support staff, as well as student veterans, this qualitative study examines which factors student veterans and support staff perceive in contributing to successful attainment of a baccalaureate degree. For this study, in-depth semi-structured one-on-one interviews were conducted with a diverse group of 12 student support staff and 6 junior and senior undergraduate student veterans at a four-year public university in California. This study applied the Schlossberg Transition Conceptual Model by extending the support factor to include the critical role of four types of student support services: academic, mental health, disability, and career services. Several major overlapping and non-overlapping themes emerged from both student and staff interviews. The most salient theme was the critical role of the Veterans Center. The Center assists student veterans in their transition and adjustment to the university. It plays a central role in providing a physical space, a hub that facilitates connectedness and student engagement on campus and assist with access to vital services and resources on campus, as well as off campus. The assistance of the Veterans Center is critical in ensuring that students receive their financial benefits, as well as verifying their coursework, so they get the courses needed for graduation and meet all GI Bill requirements. Additionally, many of the on-campus services have liaisons between the Veterans Center and their corresponding service department, where identified liaisons help ensure student veterans receive the necessary support when needed. These findings can help inform higher educational institutions, its staff, faculty, and administrators about the best practices in serving the needs of veterans toward successful transition to college, retention, and undergraduate degree attainment, as the number of student veterans in higher education is growing nationally.

Student–veterans are the least engaged group on campuses (McNair & Stielow, 2012). Integration methods and rational choice methods of student–veteran engagement, used together, lead to academic progress during and after military tours of duty. The research question guiding this study asked which factors of engagement impact academic progress for student–veterans. This was a correlational study designed to examine which aspects of rational choice (Downs, 1957) and integration (Tinto, 1975) predict academic progress for students who are also veterans of Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, or Operation New Dawn. A correlational design was used to analyze the relationship between engagement and academic progress in a self-selected sample of 40 undergraduate students who were veterans of these operations. Engagement was operationally defined as a student’s quality of satisfaction, socialization, goals, persistence, and acceptance with school and school-related activities that enhance academic progress (Alrashidi et al., 2016). There were moderate positive relationships between educational engagement and the variables of goals, persistence, social environment, acceptance, and satisfaction. The findings were that there were no relationships between the variables of goals, persistence, social environment, acceptance, and satisfaction and accumulated academic credits. However, there were significant relationships linking persistence and acceptance to GPA. -- From abstract.
