Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bessie and Her Friends Almost time, Jennie, answered Mrs. Richards, looking up from the face of the baby upon her lap to the clock upon the man tel-piece. A very pale, tiny face it was; so tiny that Sergeant Richards used to say he had to look twice to be sure there was any face there; and that of the mother which bent above it was almost as pale, sick, anxious, and worn but it brightened, as she answered Jennie. It is five minutes before six; he will be here very soon now. Away ran Jennie to the corner, where stood a cane-seated rocking-chair, and after a good deal of pushing and pulling, succeeded in drawing it up in front of the stove; then to a closet, from which she brought a pair of car pet slippers, which were placed before the chair. I wish I was big enough to reach farber's coat and put it over his chair, like you used to, morber. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Whenever they came to a very steep place, the boys and all the gentlemen, except Colonel Rush, would jump out and walk, so as to lighten the load. Aunt Annie and Aunt Bessie, who was really Aunt Bessie now, for she was Uncle Ruthven's wife, also tried this; but they soon tired, and were glad to take their seats in the wagon again. Maggie thought she must take her turn too, and asked papa to lift her out. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bessie Gray: And Our Stepmother Bessie Grey. Our little red house stands upon the hill; The path runs down between the elms and pines Until it stops before my father's mill, That sits upon the brook, o'erhung with vines, And willows, which the clematis entwines, And silver-leaf, that stoops beneath the stream To dip its radiant forehead till it shines, Reburnished, in the little waves that gleam. My mother sleeps within the church-yard nigh; The sickly yarrow and the golden-rod Are waving in the wan and pallid grass: They stare on me ungently as I pass, And, weary in their loneliness, they nod. I will not see the yellow mounds, near by, Where thin and sallow weeds their station keep, To make a feeble mock at those who sleep; I plant blush-roses 'mong the poplar-trees, And think upon the fields of heaven, not these. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bessie Boston, 1927 This is a Mariposa in a decorative form. The first. flowers were a pinkish lavender and we won dered if it would be pink in the East, for while Mariposa is usually pink with us, customers in the East write us, it is lavender. We have bushes which bear only pink flowers and some bushes which carry flowers of the lavender tones. Beau Ideal was distinctly lavender at first and then pink flowers began to develop. At the time of this writing, the middle of October, the plants are laden with great big flowers of both colors. The two colors blend harmoniously. The bushes grow tall and luxuriantly, and from early season, produce masses of long stemmed, immense blooms. This 18 one of the varieties which helped us win the prize for undisseminated seedlings two years before we are marketing it, and it was called by people who saw it, the decorative Mariposa. The lavender blooms soften to white, shaded lavender at the centre, and the pink flowers show a deeper pink at the centre. Stems are long and stiff and carry the flowers out of the foliage. To his right lay the allotment gardens just begin ning to be alive with figures, and the voices of men. And children. Beyond them, far ahead, rose the square tower of the church; to his left was the hill, and straight in front of him' the village, with its veils of smoke lightly brushed over the trees, and its lines of cottages climbing the chalk steeps behind it. His eye as he walked took in a number of such facts as life had trained it to notice. Once he stopped to bend over a fence.
