Book Synopsis On the Edge of the River Sar by : Rosalía de Castro
Download or read book On the Edge of the River Sar written by Rosalía de Castro and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-10-16 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the first feminist translation of Rosalía de Castro’s seminal poetic anthology En las orillas del Sar [On the Edge of the River Sar] (1884). Rosalía de Castro (1837–1885) was an artist of vast poetic vision. Her understanding of human nature and her deep sensitivity to the injustices suffered by women and by such marginalized peoples as those of her native region, Galicia, are manifest in verses of universal yet rarely translated significance. An outspoken proponent of both women’s rights and her region’s cultural and political autonomy, Castro used her poetry as a vehicle through which to decry the crushing hardships both groups endured as Spain vaulted between progressive liberal and conservative reactionary political forces throughout the nineteenth century. Depending upon what faction held sway in the nation at any given time during Castro’s truncated literary career, her works were either revered as revolutionary or reviled as heretical for the views they espoused. Long after her death by uterine cancer in 1885, Castro was excluded from the pantheon of Spanish literature by Restoration society for her unorthodox views. Compellingly, the poet’s conceptualization of the individual and the national self as informed by gender, ethnicity, class, and language echoes contemporary scholars of cultural studies who seek to broaden present-day definitions of national identity through the incorporation of precisely these same phenomena. Thanks to the most recent works in Rosalian and Galician studies, we are now able to recuperate and reevaluate Rosalía de Castro’s poems in their original languages for the more radical symbolism and themes they foreground related to gender, sexuality, race and class as they inform individual and national identities. However, although Castro’s poetic corpus is widely accessible in its original languages, these important features of her verses have yet to be given voice in the small number of English translations of only a sub-set of her works that have been produced in the last century. As a result, our understanding of Castro’s potential contributions to contemporary world poetries, gender studies, Galician and more broadly cultural studies is woefully incomplete. An English translation of Castro’s works that is specifically feminist in its methodological orientation offers a unique and thought-provoking means by which to fill this void.

This book was released on 2022-09-02 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nature presents humankind with a set of opportunities and risks which vary greatly in their spatial distribution. Earthquakes are the most feared natural hazards, as they occur without any recognizable warning, are unpredictable in space and time and inflict heavy losses in less than a minute duration. This book deals with the Earthquake vulnerability assessment of Srinagar city in Jammu and Kashmir, India. Vulnerability assessment with respect to natural hazards is a complex process that must consider multiple dimensions of vulnerability, including both physical and social factors. Socially created vulnerabilities are largely ignored, mainly due to the difficulty in quantifying them. This book gives a detailed vulnerability analysis of Srinagar city with respect to earthquakes by taking into consideration the physical, structural and non-structural parameters.

Book Synopsis Modelling Approaches to Understand Salinity Variations in a Highly Dynamic Tidal River by : Ali Dinar Abdullah
Download or read book Modelling Approaches to Understand Salinity Variations in a Highly Dynamic Tidal River written by Ali Dinar Abdullah and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-03-16 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reports the first systematic monitoring and modelling study on water availability, water quality and seawater intrusion of the Shatt al-Arab River (SAR) on the border of Iraq and Iran, where causes and concentration levels of salinity have not yet been fully understood, let alone addressed, leading to conflicting perceptions of its origin (external or internal), the natural conditions and the practices that can explain the current critical conditions. Current scientific knowledge on the SAR salinity problem is deficient, partially due to the complex and dynamic interaction between marine and terrestrial salinity sources, including return flows by water users of the different water sectors in the Euphrates and Tigris rivers upstream of the SAR. The development of a new series of monitoring stations and various modelling approaches helped to better understand the interactions between these different sources. The comprehensive and detailed dataset formed the basis for a validated analytical model that can predict the extent of seawater relative to other salinity sources in an estuary, and for a hydrodynamic model that can predict salinity changes. The adaptability of the models to changing conditions makes them directly applicable by water managers. The procedure can be applied to other comparable systems.
