Book excerpt: Heritage represents the meanings and representations conveyed in the present day upon artifacts, landscapes, mythologies, memories and traditions from the past. It is a key element in the shaping of identities, particularly in the context of increasingly multicultural societies. This Research Companion brings together an international team of authors to discuss the concepts, ideas and practices that inform the entwining of heritage and identity. They have assembled a wide geographical range of examples and interpret them through a number of disciplinary lenses that include geography, history, museum and heritage studies, archaeology, art history, history, anthropology and media studies. This outstanding companion offers scholars and graduate students a thoroughly up-to-date guide to current thinking and a comprehensive reference to this growing field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Completed just weeks before his death, the lectures in this volume mark a critical juncture in the career of Roland Barthes, in which he declared the intention, deeply felt, to write a novel. Unfolding over the course of two years, Barthes engaged in a unique pedagogical experiment: he combined teaching and writing to "simulate" the trial of novel-writing, exploring every step of the creative process along the way. Barthes's lectures move from the desire to write to the actual decision making, planning, and material act of producing a novel. He meets the difficulty of transitioning from short, concise notations (exemplified by his favorite literary form, haiku) to longer, uninterrupted flows of narrative, and he encounters a number of setbacks. Barthes takes solace in a diverse group of writers, including Dante, whose La Vita Nuova was similarly inspired by the death of a loved one, and he turns to classical philosophy, Taoism, and the works of François-René Chateaubriand, Gustave Flaubert, Franz Kafka, and Marcel Proust. This book uniquely includes eight elliptical plans for Barthes's unwritten novel, which he titled Vita Nova, and lecture notes that sketch the critic's views on photography. Following on The Neutral: Lecture Course at the Collège de France (1977-1978) and a third forthcoming collection of Barthes lectures, this volume provides an intensely personal account of the labor and love of writing.

Book excerpt: In 1992, Dana Lixenberg travelled to South Central Los Angeles for a magazine story on the riots that erupted following the verdict in the Rodney King trial. What she encountered inspired her to revisit the area, and led her to the community of the Imperial Courts housing project in Watts. Returning countless times over the following twenty-two years, Lixenberg gradually created a collaborative portrait of the changing face of this community. Over the years, some in the community were killed, while others disappeared or went to jail, and others, once children in early photographs, grew up and had children of their own. In this way, Imperial Courts constitutes a complex and evocative record of the passage of time in an underserved community.

Book excerpt: With an erotic softness and quiet confidence, the young,fully-nude subjects in I Heart Boyexhibit a willingness to becelebrated by all for their beauty and openness. Posing inthe intimacy of their own homes, often in studio apartmentsin Manhattan's East Village and Lower East Side, and Williamsburg and Downtown Brooklyn, lanky, hairless bodies are posed sensually against the minimalistbackgrounds of naturally lit rooms with sparse furnishings. It's an aestheticwith nods to Larry Clark and the 80s underground musicscene, and appreciated by the likes of designer HediSlimane, American Apparel, and the most popular indiebands from New York, L.A., London, Paris, and Berlin.Yatrofsky's waif-like men-merely boys just a few years ago, bordering on androgynous, with an occasional tattoo and abit of punk swagger to match their youthful naivete-hardlyresemble even the shadow of the beefcake of generationspast. This is the undressed and carefree look of today'surban trendsetter-whose style trickles out of the young, creative circles in cities, only to be copied elsewheretomorrow. With each photograph, these sexually charged images ofmale bodies invite the viewer to dwell upon the welcometenderness of warm skin. Ultimately I Heart Boy is a series ofnudity in the purest sense; of being simply bared as humanbefore the world.

The British Survey was originally classified and is published here for the first time. By combining the original Report and an analysis of its strengths and weaknesses, together with a short history of the genesis of the British Survey, this work is an important contribution to the continuing historical debate over the effects of the strategic bombing offensive in the Second World War.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of the buildings erected during the era of National Socialism are still standing in downtown Berlin today. In this architecture guide Matthias Donath, building and art historian, presents thirty typical examples of Third Reich architecture. Almost all of the buildings from this period are preserved except for the Reich Chancellery where only traces remain. In addition to ministries, administration centers and embassies, the author describes bunkers, office buildings and a house of the Hitler Youth. The Tempelhof Airport and Olympic grounds are well-known even outside of Berlin. The buildings presented in the book show how diverse the architecture was during these years. The author explains their different functions as well as their intended political message and how they were used for propaganda. Historical photos show the original buildings. Visitors to Berlin and Berlin residents curious about their city’s history will find this book illuminating. The sites are easy to find with the help of a map. Thirty buildings from Berlin’s inner districts are described in this architecture guide, including traces of the Reich Chancellery, various ministries, the Reich National Bank, air-raid and anti-aircraft bunkers, embassies, the Tempelhof Airport, the exhibition and convention grounds, business offices, a model house for the Hitler Youth, the Reich Sports Field (Olympic stadium) and the ensemble at Fehrbelliner Platz.
