Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agent Zigzag and Operation Mincemeat, two thrilling accounts of World War II espionage, are available together as an ebook—with an excerpt from the New York Times bestseller Double Cross. “Not since Ian Fleming and John le Carré has a spy writer so captivated readers.”—The Hollywood Reporter AGENT ZIGZAG • “Wildly improbably but entirely true . . . [a] compellingly cinematic spy thriller with verve.”—Entertainment Weekly Eddie Chapman was a charming criminal, a con man, and a philanderer. He was also one of the most remarkable double agents Britain has ever produced. Inside the traitor was a man of loyalty; inside the villain was a hero. The problem for Chapman, his spymasters, and his lovers was to know where one persona ended and the other began. Based on recently declassified files, Agent Zigzag tells Chapman’s full story for the first time. It’s a gripping tale of loyalty, love, treachery, espionage, and the thin and shifting line between fidelity and betrayal. OPERATION MINCEMEANT • “Brilliant and almost absurdly entertaining.”—The New Yorker Near the end of World War II, two British naval officers came up with a brilliant and slightly mad scheme to mislead the Nazi armies about where the Allies would attack southern Europe. To carry out the plan, they would have to rely on the most unlikely of secret agents: a dead man. Ben Macintyre’s dazzling, critically acclaimed bestseller chronicles the extraordinary story of what happened after British officials planted this dead body—outfitted in a British military uniform with a briefcase containing false intelligence documents—in Nazi territory, and how this secret mission fooled Hitler into changing military positioning, paving the way for the Allies to overtake the Nazis.

Download or read book Ben Macintyre's Espionage Files written by Ben Macintyre and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2012-11-18 with total page 1549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agent Zigzag: One December night in 1942, a Nazi parachutist landed in a Cambridgeshire field. His mission: to sabotage the British war effort. His name was Eddie Chapman, but he would shortly become MI5's Agent Zigzag. Dashing and louche, courageous and unpredictable, inside the traitor was a hero, inside the villain, a man of conscience: the problem for Chapman, his many lovers and his spymasters, was knowing where one ended and the other began. Ben Macintyre weaves together diaries, letters, photographs, memories and top-secret MI5 files to create the exhilarating account of Britain's most sensational double agent. Operation Mincemeat: One overcast April morning in 1943, a fisherman notices a corpse floating in the sea off the coast of Spain. When the body is brought ashore, he is identified as a British soldier, Major William Martin of the Royal Marines. A leather attaché case, secured to his belt, reveals an intelligence goldmine: top-secret documents Allied invasion plans. But Major William Martin never existed. The body is that of a dead Welsh tramp and every single document is fake. Operation Mincemeat is the incredible true story of the most extraordinary deception ever planned by Churchill's spies - an outrageous lie that travelled from a Whitehall basement, all the way to Hitler's desk. Double Cross: D-Day, 6 June 1944, the turning point of the Second World War, was a victory of arms. But it was also a triumph for a different kind of operation: one of deceit... At the heart of the deception was the 'Double Cross System', a team of double agents whose bravery, treachery, greed and inspiration succeeded in convincing the Nazis that Calais and Norway, not Normandy, were the targets of the 150,000-strong Allied invasion force. These were not conventional warriors, but their masterpiece of deceit saved thousands of lives. Their codenames were Bronx, Brutus, Treasure, Tricycle and Garbo. This is their story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As European security structures are undergoing transformation in the 1990s it is crucial to examine their origins and rationale: NATO secured peace and facilitated economic and political co-operation, while also becoming the vehicle of national rivalry. This book examines why and how NATO came into existence, and what its strengths and weaknesses were during its formative years. It draws conclusions from these experiences relevant to the reforms of Western security structures in the 1990s.
Book Synopsis Normative Power Europe Meets Israel by : Sharon Pardo
Download or read book Normative Power Europe Meets Israel written by Sharon Pardo and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2015-08-21 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book draws on some of the scholarship in perception studies and “Normative Power Europe” theory. The study of perceptions, although dating back to the mid-1970s, is gaining renewed currency in recent years both in international relations, in general, and in European Union studies, in particular. And yet, despite the significance of external perceptions of the European Union, there is still a lack of theoretical forays into this area as well as an absence of empirical investigations of actual external role conceptions. These lacunae in scholarly work are significant, since how the European Union is perceived outside its borders, and what factors shape these perceptions, are crucial for deepening the theory of “Normative Power Europe.” The book analyzes Israeli perceptions towards “Normative Power Europe,” the European Union, and NATO through five themes that, the book argues, underscore different dimensions of key Israeli conceptions of “Normative Power Europe” and NATO. The book seeks to contribute to the existing research on the European Union’s role as a “normative power,” the Union’s external representations, and on Israeli-European Union relations more broadly.

Download or read book The Family File written by Mark Aarons and published by Black Inc.. This book was released on 2010-06-30 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In early 1965 at age thirteen, Mark Aarons came under the ‘adverse notice’ of ASIO, which opened volume one of his nine-volume security file. Mark was following in the footsteps of his father, Laurie Aarons, whose 85-volume file commenced in the early 1930s when he was fourteen. For four generations the Aarons family were ‘subversive revolutionaries’, avowed communists who challenged the established constitutional order. Having obtained access to his family’s ASIO files – the largest collection in the nation’s history – Mark Aarons combines their meticulous chronicles with his family’s own accounts to tell a political tale of revolution and dissent, idealism and intrigue. It is also an intimate story of life under surveillance, a reflection on communism and its legacy, and on what it was to be a radical in Australia in eventful times. ‘A wonderful book, a dextrous and enormously readable blend of memoir and politics...a valuable and important contribution to Australian history.’ —Weekend Australian ‘A great story’ —Australian Book Review ‘Compelling.’ —Herald Sun ‘The Family File is a fascinating tale of love and passion, courage and perfidy, ambition and progressive politics, told against a background of world and national events. There are lots of surprises, including the discovery of an unexpected supporter amongst Australian spy-catchers and a near-death confession of human love with the admission that much of the struggle involved the ‘self-delusion of revolutionary heroism’. For every page that discloses the autocratic rule of Moscow and the despotism of its minions, there are many more stories of progressive politics in Australia: workers’ rights, anti-apartheid, indigenous entitlements, feminism, opposition to the Vietnam War, green bans, East Timor independence, and Australian nationalism.’ —The Hon. Michael Kirby, Past Justice of the High Court of Australia

Niko saw it first. “MiG’s on our tail.” “Thanks for that.” Matt put the small aircraft into a dive. Tasha’s stomach dove with it. Matt flew as close to the ground as he could, staying just high enough to miss the trees. If they were shot down, at least they wouldn’t have far to crash. Not flying in a straight line, Matt weaved in and out the top branches of the trees, up and down, using military strafing maneuvers. Tasha felt like she was on a roller-coaster. The MiG, flying at a speed much faster than the small plane, flew over them. “Dave send those coordinates yet?” Matt asked. Tasha checked her phone. “No, not yet.” Now, the MiG was now coming straight at them. “Let’s play chicken,” Tasha suggested. “Crazy woman.” Matt shook his head. “But smart. Hang on.” He pulled back on the yoke and the airplane rose at an alarming rate, pressing Tasha back into her seat. “Um . . . I was just joking. You know my sense of humor.” The plane kept gaining altitude until the MiG was directly in their line of sight. “Matt. Sarcasm. It was only sarcasm. I wasn’t serious. If the pilot gets over the shock, he’s going to blow us out of the sky.” Tasha could imagine bullets ripping through the windshield. “He’s got to get over the shock first,” Matt said. He didn’t waiver, but flew steadily toward the MiG. Little plane facing off with big bad-ass military jet. Tasha couldn’t imagine a scarier sight. “What the hell? Are you going to wait until you can see the white of his eyes?” Matt laughed, crazily enough seeming to enjoy himself. Flashbacks from his military days, perhaps? “Going down.” He put the plane into another sharp dive. Down, down, down. He was so focused his face looked like a granite statue. The MiG shot over the top and disappeared behind them. Only trouble was, Tasha’s stomach was still going up, up, up. It was possible she was going to lose the food she’d eaten earlier. “How the hell do you do this for a living?” “What happened to my tough woman?” “Your woman? I’m sure I’ll need to analyze that when I’m not about to barf.” She held onto her head, took deep lung-expanding breaths through her nose. He tossed her a glance. “You are looking a little green, baby.” She only managed a sideways glance. “Call me baby again, and I’ll cut out your tongue.” **** Will Tasha cut out Matt's tongue?
