British attempts to drive the Americans out of the land and hostilities with the Cherokees put a tremendous strain upon the inhabitants. Nathaniel "Fox" Carter, part-Cherokee, finds himself caught in the region's increasing unrest. When he decides to explore his ancestry, he is befriended by Hannah Spencer, who tries to help him discover who he is and where he belongs. Little does he know that forces from both sides of his heritage are conspiring toward his destruction. Will Hannah be able to convince Carter that working for the cause of war is not the right path to follow?

Book excerpt: The Price of Freedom, which is part one honorable Marine/Veteran's memoir of a riveting wartime experience in Iraq and other part political commentary, offers a clarion call to freedom loving people in the world, in particular Americans, Iraqis and Nigerians. With candor The Price of Freedom sheds light on the Superman myth of the U.S. Marine, and why for some in the armed services it has become awkward to open up and share battle scars. Kingsley Uzukwu, has crafted a powerful cathartic work, which honors fallen soldiers and promises to be balm for some loved ones, for others an unleash of salty tears and yet for another an aha moment or even still a battle cry. He offers an authentic voice, crying in the wilderness. He speaks in plain terms of how Iraqi Freedom has impacted us all to become "casualties," He paints with broad strokes the tender lives of World Trade Center casualties, the uncensored lives of Marines and delicate blossoms of friendship and love. He weaves an unforgettable account, sometimes hauntingly eerie. He fittingly portrays Marines as responsible leaders and salutes his Marine comrades in penning The Price of Freedom. He showcases the full complement/leadership skill set, including intelligence, communication, technology, decision making and problem solving in tactical environments, possessed by Marines. With surgical precision he describes our troops and their rigorous training to adhere to appropriate rule of engagement and escalation of force. The author addresses moral and ethical dilemmas (e.g. What difference, if any, exists between killing and murder in war?) coupled with leadership beyond national boundaries, though he points out a U.S. visa to be at a premium in Nigeria and highlights the prize that full U.S. citizenship holds for others in the world.

Henry Clay Barnabee, once called the funniest man of his time, brought his crew here for relaxing lakeside summers to rest up their vocal cords around the turn of the century. Discover the story behind a stolen Chinese statue that might just be responsible for a string of curses in Naples and misfortune on the shores of Long Lake. Marilyn Weymouth Seguin explores the unusual, the mysterious and the sometimes weird layers of regional history that have remained hidden--until now.

Book excerpt: Wings of Freedom by Papia Ray is a collection of poems written in different verse forms on varied subjects, objective and subjective.Nature, man, war, life, death, all find wings through the poet’s pen. Something as light as the ‘Bumble Bee’ or the mixed feelings of nostalgia in ‘The House’ or, the traumatic realization of ‘– the death of mighty Death’ in ‘Tread Softly’, or the bold and angry outburst in ‘Betrayal’, awakens a variety of emotions.Wings of Freedom has Nature’s inspirational presence throughout. As the book progresses from one poem to the next, the reader’s mind will flow like a meandering river, move to the rhythm of a flight where the bird perches for a second on a swaying branch before taking off again, or, sometimes, rise high like an oceanwave or, fall gently like a leaf to rest in the warmth of night’s ‘sweet embrace’.

Book excerpt: In the turbulent backdrop of India’s struggle for freedom in British India, destiny brings together Raju, a young Indian aspiring to be a revolutionary and Eileen, the teenage daughter of a British officer. Will their relationship survive the societal pressures, cultural divide, and the political turmoil? It is the year 1911. King George the Fifth is due in Delhi for his coronation celebration. A devastating fire in the royal camp gives rise to speculations of sabotage and an assassination attempt by the Indian revolutionaries. In the aftermath of this sensational event, Raju, a college student, struggling to establish his identity in the charged atmosphere of India’s freedom struggle, is caught up in the vortex of violent passions, as two of his innocent friends are made scapegoats for the blaze, by the police and murdered. Raju’s relentless journey against colonial rule and the economic exploitation of India begins. An effervescent romance with Eileen keeps Raju inspired in their roller-coaster ride through the backdrop of British imperialism, turbulent political conflicts, and the fury of the freedom revolution. “Wings of Freedom” is a novel about British India, with a difference, as an Indian author, Ratan Kaul, brings out this tumultuous era from an Indian point of view.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the wars for independence in Spanish South America (1808-1826), thousands of slaves enlisted under the promise of personal freedom and, in some cases, freedom for other family members. Blacks were recruited by opposing sides in these conflicts and their loyalties rested with whomever they believed would emerge victorious. The prospect of freedom was worth risking one's life for, and wars against Spain presented unprecedented opportunities to attain it.Much hedging over the slavery issue continued, however, even after the patriots came to power. The prospect of abolition threatened existing political, economic, and social structures, and the new leaders would not encroach upon what were still considered the property rights of powerful slave owners. The patriots attacked the institution of slavery in their rhetoric, yet maintained the status quo in the new nations. It was not until a generation later that slavery would be declared illegal in all of Spain's former mainland colonies.Through extensive archival research, Blanchard assembles an accessible, comprehensive, and broadly based study to investigate this issue from the perspectives of Royalists, patriots, and slaves. He examines the wartime political, ideological, and social dynamics that led to slave recruitment, and the subsequent repercussions in the immediate postindependence era. Under the Flags of Freedom sheds new light on the vital contribution of slaves to the wars for Latin American independence, which, up until now, has been largely ignored in the histories and collective memories of these nations.

Book excerpt: When Joseph and Phebe Fessenden came to the peaceful village of South Bridgton, Maine to serve the newly founded Congregational church in 1829, they soon found themselves embroiled in controversy over the abolition of slavery and the evils of "demon rum." Tempers ran high and Parson Joe often found himself running counter to public opinion. Mobs threatened him with tar and feathers, cannonballs, and kidnapping. Still, he stood tall and fought tirelessly for the rights of all those who lived in chains beneath freedom's wing.

Book excerpt: In the 1970s the USMC bought the AV-8A Harrier from the UK whose VTOL capabilities allowed it to serve as a tactical aircraft that could deploy with Marine forces on amphibious assault ships and provide air cover and close air support from large deck aircraft carriers. Third in a trilogy on US Marine Corps Harrier IIs in combat, it will be the first volume to cover the whole story of the AV-8B's service employment during peacekeeping operations and then in Afghanistan. With profile artwork for all frontline AV-8B units detailing the unique colours and markings applied by each squadron, this volume presents the widest variety of first-hand accounts of AV-8B air operations and missions by pilots and ground forces involved in Operation Enduring Freedom published to date.
