It uses a gravity model of economic flows to compare actual import, export and investment levels to those predicted by the model. This shows that, in the period 2003-2006, Canada was under-performing in terms of all bilateral economic flows except its outward foreign direct investment to China. In comparison with other G7 countries and Australia, Canada has under-weighed China as an international partner except in its imports from that country. The predicted values for all bilateral economic variables suggest that China should be Canada's second most important partner in terms of all bilateral economic flows, except for those with the United States.

Book excerpt: This brief urges Canadian policy makers to actively and directly engage with the Chinese as the process unfolds, to help alleviate structural weaknesses for the benefit of both economies. [...] In addition to bolstering the Chinese economy as it moves up the development curve, such a move is crucial to Canada's long- term prosperity in a next phase of globalization that is likely to be less U. [...] As a recent report notes, Canada's trade with China increased by more than 350 percent from 1998 to 2007, while its trade with the rest of the world expanded at the more pedestrian pace of 33 percent (Tiagi and Zhou 2009). [...] With decades of close trade ties, the composition of trade between Canada and the U. [...] By fostering and strengthening direct trade and investment linkages with China and other emerging markets, and by developing a flexible and pragmatic set of hedging strategies, Canada can successfully navigate the turbulent times ahead and address the structural weaknesses of its own economy by deftly leveraging China's development ambitions in its own favour.

Book excerpt: It does so by quantifying Canada's economic relations with China in terms of Canada's merchandise trade with China, its trade in services with China, inward and outward foreign direct investment between the two countries, and the presence of Chinese immigrants in Canada. [...] In 1973, the governments of the two countries signed a trade agreement that was fol- lowed by the establishment of the Canada-China Trade Council (based in Toronto) in 1978. [...] In addition, we look at foreign direct investment between the two countries and document the Chinese community in Canada, using the most recent data.6 Quantifying Canada's economic relationship with China would help identify the extent of Canada's economic linkage with China along the above dimensions. [...] For example, the World Bank ranks China 83rd (from a list of 178 countries) in its ranking of countries based on the ease of doing business.13 The Fraser Institute's index of economic freedom shows that China has made progress towards a more open economy but stil has a considerable distance to go to match other Asian countries and the most advanced economies in the world. [...] For example, from 1998 to 2007, trade with China has increased by more than 350% while trade with the world, excluding China, has grown at a much slower pace of 33% (figure 5.4).20 China's share in overall Canadian trade has grown The percentage of overall trade that Canada has with a certain trading partner, tells us how important that trade partner is in the overall trade profile of the Canadian.

Book excerpt: With the U.S. economy stalled and the Eurozone ensnared in sovereign debt crisis, there are increasing calls for Canada to engage more deeply with China to counterbalance the weakness evidenced in those traditional trading partners. Indeed, two-way trade and investment flows between the two countries have been growing rapidly, albeit from a low base. If Canada is to benefit, however, from booming mainland demand not just for energy commodities, but more value-added products and services, a shift in economic strategy will be in order.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Americans are generally aware of China's ambitions as a global economic and military superpower, few understand just how deeply and assertively that country has already sought to influence American society. As the authors of this volume write, it is time for a wake-up call. In documenting the extent of Beijing's expanding influence operations inside the United States, they aim to raise awareness of China's efforts to penetrate and sway a range of American institutions: state and local governments, academic institutions, think tanks, media, and businesses. And they highlight other aspects of the propagandistic “discourse war” waged by the Chinese government and Communist Party leaders that are less expected and more alarming, such as their view of Chinese Americans as members of a worldwide Chinese diaspora that owes undefined allegiance to the so-called Motherland.Featuring ideas and policy proposals from leading China specialists, China's Influence and American Interests argues that a successful future relationship requires a rebalancing toward greater transparency, reciprocity, and fairness. Throughout, the authors also strongly state the importance of avoiding casting aspersions on Chinese and on Chinese Americans, who constitute a vital portion of American society. But if the United States is to fare well in this increasingly adversarial relationship with China, Americans must have a far better sense of that country's ambitions and methods than they do now.

Book excerpt: "The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic marks the most significant, singular global disruption since World War II, with health, economic, political, and security implications that will ripple for years to come." -Global Trends 2040 (2021) Global Trends 2040-A More Contested World (2021), released by the US National Intelligence Council, is the latest report in its series of reports starting in 1997 about megatrends and the world's future. This report, strongly influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic, paints a bleak picture of the future and describes a contested, fragmented and turbulent world. It specifically discusses the four main trends that will shape tomorrow's world: - Demographics-by 2040, 1.4 billion people will be added mostly in Africa and South Asia. - Economics-increased government debt and concentrated economic power will escalate problems for the poor and middleclass. - Climate-a hotter world will increase water, food, and health insecurity. - Technology-the emergence of new technologies could both solve and cause problems for human life. Students of trends, policymakers, entrepreneurs, academics, journalists and anyone eager for a glimpse into the next decades, will find this report, with colored graphs, essential reading.
