Everyone looks back to the good old days, with their traditions of hospitality, chivalry, and good breeding, when the large plantation houses teemed with a pretty activity - hunting, drinking, children and servants all over the place, the skirts of visiting relatives brushing ceaselessly up, and down the stairs. Kinship was a bond that entitled seventh cousins to room and board for a lifetime. Why not? Labor was plentiful, food was abundant. Book excerpt: Excerpt from All Quiet Along the Potomac: And Other Poems HE poems now collected for the first time have been contributed during several years to various publications - the earlier ones to Harper's Magazine and Weekly, and most of the later ones to the IV. Y. Ledger. Copied by other papers, with due credit given, perhaps, at first, some of them have become nameless waifs floating on the sea of print. The poor Picket, whose unquiet ghost refuses to remain laid All Quiet along the Potomac, where I left him years ago, has several claimants, all with authentic proofs of authorship, and Which shall it Be? Reappears under various titles at regular intervals. So I have gathered, for the friendly hands that care to hold it, this handful of white clover and daisies. I have found Life's poetry and pathos blooming beside its trodden paths and by the doorways of its homes. If some gentle heart shall find within this sheaf some treasured waif or song remembered, or if words yet unfamiliar bring to me one new friend, I have not rhymed in vain. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Under Five Commanders, or a Boy's Experience With the Army of the Potomac George B. Mcclellan, the Organizer and First Commander of that grand body of men - the Army of the Potomac. That, as its Com mander, he was the greatest General of the times, and had he received the support of the authorities at Washington when he entered upon the Peninsular Campaign, the same as was afterwards given to General Grant when he became Commander, the war would have ended long before 'it did. In the fohowing/pages the author has only briefly mentioned 'the names of Generals Richardson, Sumner and Hancock, three of the bravest Generals in the Army of the Potomac. He would have wished to add more to what he has written in reference to those brave and gallant officers under whom he served, but space forbids. And now after the lapse of years, he cannot forget two of his Officers - the brave Colonel Chapman, or that grand fatherly officer, Colonel, afterwardsgeneral, Zook. Both of these officers treated the author like a son, and when death claimed them none mourned or revered their memory more than your humble ser vant. To the Sons of Veterans it is hoped that this book may awaken and rekindle their patriotism and love of country, and that should the occasion arise that they, like their fathers, will be willing to rise in defense of the Stars and Stripes, the colors that never yet turned its back to the foe, or ever was trailed in the dust by its enemies. So with the prayer that this book may accomplish all that the writer intended, and with this view in mind, this book is sent forth with the best wishes of the author. Should the National River be in existence at the time the compact is adopted, it would be managed in harmony with the plans and programs of the Compact Com mission, just as would other public lands within the basin. This coopera tion in basic matters like land conservation and pollution control will have a great deal to do with how well the Potomac can be protected and the ultimate uses to which its waters and shorelands can be put. No, no, ' returned Walker; I grant you they are not such good fellows as we used to meet in Duke's Court; but they are indifferent good in one sense. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geologic Story of Great Falls and the Potomac River Gorge The Great Falls of the Potomac River is the most spectacular landscape feature of the Washington metropolitan area. It has influenced the lives and fortunes of man in the Potomac Valley for centuries. Countless generations of Indians used it as a place to gather, to trade, and to fish. For the early settlers it was a barrier to river navigation, an obstacle that canal builders struggled to overcome. The river above the falls has been the principal source of water for the city of Washington for more than 100 years. In its seaward course, the Potomac River crosses many small rapids and cascades, but these are insignificant in comparison with the foaming fury of Great Falls, where the river drops 12 meters in about 180 meters and is channeled into a narrow rock-walled gorge less than 25 meters wide in places. In the summer the flow may be less than liters a second, but during floods the flow commonly reaches 40 million liters a second. The average flow pouring over the falls is liters of water every second and in a year, more than trillion liters - enough water to flood the entire District of Columbia to a depth of 55 meters, converting the Washington Monument (169 meters high) into a tall lighthouse. During three periods of recent flooding in 1936, again in 1942, and still again in 1972 - water covered the towpath of the Chesapeake and Ohio (c and 0) Canal on the Maryland side of the river and spread across the area of the Visitor Center and parking lots on the Virginia side. Floods of this size are unusual; but about once every 2 years, floodwaters rise to the brink of the gorge at the falls, reaching to within 4 to 6 meters of the trails and overlooks along the cliffs. There have been 20 such floods since 1930. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
