Download or read book Global Tourism written by Sarah M. Lyon and published by Rowman Altamira. This book was released on 2012-03-15 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global tourism is perhaps the largest scale movement of goods, services, and people in history. Consequently, it is a significant catalyst for economic development and sociopolitical change. While tourism increasingly accounts for ever greater segments of national economies, the consequences of this growth for intercultural interaction are diverse and uncertain. The proliferation of tourists also challenges classic theoretical descriptions of just what an economy is. What are the commodities being consumed? What is the division of labor between producers and clients in creating the value of tourist exchanges? How do culture, power, and history shape these interactions? What are the prospects for sustainable tourism? How is cultural heritage being shaped by tourists around the world? These critical questions inspired this volume in which the contributors explore the connections among economy, sustainability, heritage, and identity that tourism and related processes makes explicit. The volume moves beyond the limits of place-specific discussions, case studies, and best practice examples. Accordingly, it is organized according to three overarching themes: exploring dimensions of cultural heritage, the multi-faceted impacts of tourism on both hosts and guests, and the nature of touristic encounters. Based on ethnographic and archaeological research conducted in distinct locations, the contributors’ conclusions and theoretical arguments reach far beyond the limits of isolated case studies. Together, they contribute to a new synthesis for the anthropology of tourism while simultaneously demonstrating how emerging theories of the economics of tourism can lead to the rethinking of traditionally non-touristic enterprises—from farming to medical occupations.

Book Synopsis From Global Policy to Local Reality at a World Heritage Site by : Daniela Niemeier
Download or read book From Global Policy to Local Reality at a World Heritage Site written by Daniela Niemeier and published by diplom.de. This book was released on 2019-03-27 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines existing challenges to the implementation of global United Nations policy guidelines on issues of outreach and adult education, as contained in the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), on the local level, using the Laughing Bird Caye National Park, a World Heritage Site co-managed by the Friends of Nature organization, as an example. For this analysis of conservational and educational issues, central categories such as livelihood, empowerment, community participation and community education, which are included in the new paradigm of protected areas management, compose the contextual backbone of the research. By use of Niklas Luhmann’s system theory a dimensional theoretic embedding allows for the determination of communication processes between organizations of different levels and shapes. In the Caribbean region examined, the offshore reef and also the livelihood of the inhabitants of the coastal area are threatened. Information on local living conditions in social and economic terms, as well as their impact on and interactions with the natural environment is provided. The cross-cutting issues covered by the framework of the CBD, as listed under Article 13, target Communication, Education and Public Awareness (CEPA). The case analysed in this paper is schematically positioned according to its provisions in terms of space and habitats as pertaining to programmatic domains of the CBD. A multi-level analysis of the systemic interrelation between global policy and local reality is conducted. Problems that hinder conservationally sound and time-efficient communication processes are identified by means of a case study on the local organization and found to be primarily caused by insufficient management. Further obstructive influences from the national and global levels are identified. And include a lack of coordination and collaboration. Findings of the thesis indicate a need for increased networking and more transparency regarding decision making, these are strongly recommended for better practices on site and improvements for systemic communication development and information exchange worldwide.

Book Synopsis Governing Maya Communities and Lands in Belize by : Laurie Kroshus Medina
Download or read book Governing Maya Communities and Lands in Belize written by Laurie Kroshus Medina and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2024-05-17 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Confronting a debt crisis, the Belizean government has strategized to maximize revenues from lands designated as state property, privatizing lands for cash crop production and granting concessions for timber and oil extraction. Meanwhile, conservation NGOs have lobbied to establish protected areas on these lands to address a global biodiversity crisis. They promoted ecotourism as a market-based mechanism to fund both conservation and debt repayment; ecotourism also became a mechanism for governing lands and people—even state actors themselves—through the market. Mopan and Q’eqchi’ Maya communities, dispossessed of lands and livelihoods through these efforts, pursued claims for Indigenous rights to their traditional lands through Inter-American and Belizean judicial systems. This book examines the interplay of conflicting forms of governance that emerged as these strategies intersected: state performances of sovereignty over lands and people, neoliberal rule through the market, and Indigenous rights-claiming, which challenged both market logics and practices of sovereignty.
