Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Resurrection of Jesus There is scarcely another fact' in the Christian Faith that has caused so much difficulty to the belief of the modern man as that of the Resurrection of Jesus. The advance of science in our days seems to leave no room for miracle, especially for such a miracle as the resurrection of the dead to a new bodily life. And yet the question here is not of a miracle which could be put aside as unhistorical, without essential deduction from the apostolic Gospel. The church has always considered the resurrection of Jesus as a principal part of her message. The apostle Paul occasionally describes Christian saving faith in the words: Thou believest in thine heart that God hath raised Jesus from the dead (rom. 10. 9) and he also says directly: If Christ be not risen then is our preaching vain ye are yet in your sins. Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished (1 Cor. 15. I4, 17, In like manner among all other New Testament writers, the resurrec. Book excerpt: Excerpt from May I Believe?: Or the Warrant of Faith While I have learned that, in such cases, nothing but the illumination and sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit can give deliverance yet I have also learned that the Spirit works through the truth, and that only as we learn and appreciate the truth of God's word, can we arrive at clear, settled, cheerful hopes of mercy through Jesus Christ. Should any one therefore ask why I venture to publish a book of this character, I have but one answer to make. A desire to aid all persons subjected to such darkness of mind, to find the immediate and perfect relief which the gospel of the grace of God gives, has suggested the work and urged its preparation. Better is William Arnot's "Laws from Heaven for Life on Earth," which, however, does not deal with the whole work. Dr. David Thomas has an exposition called "The Practical Philosopher." Delitzsch's critical commentary is the best. Ecclesiastes. There are suggestive works on this book by Plumptre, S. Cox, and T. C. Finlayson, and an exhaustive commentary by Dr. C. H. H. Wright. Dr. James Hamilton's "Royal Preacher" is well known. Song Of Solomon. Moody Stuart and Littledale represent the spiritual interpretation from very different points of view. By interpreters of other schools the book has been somewhat avoided. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Jesus Christ did not die on the cross so you and I could have a nice day. Ministers and teachers who water down the gospel of Christ in order to make it more popular and appealing may be leading their fun-loving audiences down the road to eternal punishment. This book is John MacArthur's unflinching, unapologetic treatise on the modern tendency to alter the true message of Christianity in order to meet the whims and desires of a culture hoping for nonconfrontational messages, easy answers, and superficial commitments. Too many people just want a Madison Avenue Jesus to make them well, make them happy, and make them prosperous. But Jesus Christ isn't a personal genie. He is the Savior. He died in agony to satisfy the wrath of a holy God and to forgive the sins of humankind. Faith in Him demands a willingness to make any sacrifice He asks. The hard truth about Christianity is that the cost is high, but the rewards are priceless: abundant and eternal life that comes only from faithfully follwing Christ.

His historical romances of frontier and Indian life in the early American days created a unique form of American literature. Before embarking on his career as a writer, Cooper served in the U.S. Navy as a Midshipman, which greatly influenced many of his novels and other writings. The novel that launched his career was The Spy, a tale about counterespionage set during the Revolutionary War. He also wrote numerous sea stories, and his best-known works are five historical novels of the frontier period known as the Leatherstocking Tales. Among his most famous works is the Romantic novel The Last of the Mohicans, often regarded as his masterpiece.
