Queen Mothers from Ghanaian tradition are revered as the leaders of their matrilineal families and the teachers of the high chiefs (Müller, 2013; Stoeltje, 1997). Conversely, the influence of the British Queen Mother on Black women in the Americas translates as a powerless title of (dis)courtesy. Characterized as a deviant figure by colonialists, the Black Queen Mother’s role as disruptive agent was created by White domination of Black life (Masenya, 2014) and this branding persists among contemporary perceptions of Black women who function as the mother, teacher, or leader figure in various spaces. Nevertheless, Black women as cultural anomalies were suitable to mother others for centuries in their roles as chattel and domestic servants in the United States. Dill (2014), Lawson (2000), Lewis (1977) and Rodriguez (2016) provide explorations of the devaluation of Black women in roles of power with these effects wide-ranging from economic and family security, professional and business development, healthcare maintenance, political representation, spiritual enlightenment and educational achievement. This text interrogates contexts where Black women function as Queen Mothers and contests the trivialization of their manifold contributions. The contributed chapters explore: The myriad experiences of Black women mothering, teaching and leading their children, families and communities; how spirituality has influenced the leadership styles of Black women as mothers and teachers; and how Black women are uniquely positioned to mother, teach, and lead in personal and professional spaces.

This exploratory study contributes to our understanding of motivating and constraining factors that influenced a Black woman leader in academia. By examining the historical antecedents of slavery, racism, and sexism through the lenses of the lived experiences of an African American woman chief executive officer in a community college setting, aspiring young Black women will gain insight into factors that may enhance their ability to achieve the CEO status. Black feminist thought and critical social theory offered a framework for interpreting the perceptions of this phenomenal Black woman. The researcher employed the art of listening and the in-depth interview for data collection. These tools allowed the informant to use her own voice to tell her story. Relationships, the value of education, construction of a positive self-identity, leadership, and the ability to adapt to adversity/resiliency were the five major themes that emerged through thoughtful analysis. This woman embodies moral leadership, a leadership model that includes the ethics of caring and personal accountability. The findings illuminate a model of leadership for the 21st century.

Book excerpt: This study examines the structural, institutional, and representational barriers and challenges of African American women college and university presidents at baccalaureate institutions and the personal and professional coping strategies they use to persist. The analysis distinguishes between barriers faced on route to the presidency and challenges faced while serving as president in order to fill an empirical gap in the literature regarding challenges faced by African American women presidents. This study uses the method of counterstories to uplift the voices of these leaders and to disrupt the dominant narratives about the lack of African American women leadership in colleges and universities. These counterstories draw from in-depth semi structured virtual interviews with a purposeful sample of nine African American women college and university presidents. The presidents' counterstories are analyzed through frameworks of Black Feminist Thought (BFT) and Intersectionality. An intersectional analysis revealed these presidents encounter interlocking racialized and gendered barriers ascending to the presidency and challenges during their presidencies that 1) communicate others' beliefs that African American women cannot or should not be college presidents, 2) affect their self-perception about their ability and interest in being college presidents, and 3) overtly limit their ascendency to the role and efficacy once in the role. This study also found coping strategies of resiliency and responsibility that allow them to stay in their presidencies. The resiliency and effectiveness of these presidents shines through in their counterstories as proof of their ability to lead. Results from this study provide insight into African American women's leadership in higher education and can inspire African American female students and administrators to seek higher education leadership. In addition, results may inform search firms and can provide trustees and board members with insights to experiences African American women have as president as they consider them as leaders for their institutions.

Book excerpt: Gender role beliefs of African American women in the United States should be investigated in a manner that considers their unique experiences and the distinct background of her cultural sharing group. In this study, gender role beliefs of African American women were examined by addressing the research question: What are the gender role beliefs of African American women for African American men and women? Eight focus groups comprising 44 African American women were conducted. Women were diverse in terms of age, religion, and socio-economic status. An ethnographic phenomenological approach was used to explore views related to gender roles among African American women. Nvivo 8, a qualitative data analysis software program, was utilized to code transcribed focus group data. Eight themes and 11 subthemes emerged from the data and were divided into three categories: gender role beliefs for women, gender role beliefs for men, and relevant contextual factors. Themes for gender role beliefs about women were 1) Having Multiple Roles, 2) Dedication to Care of Others, 3) Perceived Social Inferiority, and 4) Strength. Themes for gender role beliefs about men were 5) Lack of Commitment, 6) Strength, and 7) Mental and Emotional Immaturity. The theme that captured related contextual factors of gender roles was 8) Personal and Socio-historical Experiences of African Americans. Knowledge of gender role views can help provide a better understanding of human behavior and assist in the development of culturally specific interventions.
