This book was released on 2019-05-14 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central point that this volume makes is that much of what happened in Jammu & Kashmir in the critical first few years (1947-53) needs a more careful reassessment. It is argued that there were little voices of ordinary people that should have been heard but were ignored. The political discourse that took centre stage even as it appeared more assertive and representative of mass public opinion was, however, as is now clear only a clever and misleading political move. Much of the source material upon which the author has based his study has till now remained unstudied and uncited – rare hard to find books, pamphlets, articles in journals, magazines and newspapers, official and party reports and so on. The volume takes the reader back in time to a kind of ring side seat. Kashmir’s cultural and historical legacy, the invasion, the issue of the plebiscite, the United Nations and the ceasefire, the Praja Parishad and most important of all the political scene and its key players – Prime Minister Nehru, Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee and Sheikh Abdullah. Based on the nature of its sources the volume breaks free of a stereotyped approach to understanding the origin of what we commonly term today as the ‘Kashmir problem’. The volume argues that contemporary views recorded as they are in the heat of the moment with natural spontaneity often contain hidden lines and new light. Not surprisingly contemporary versions tell us a story very different from mainstream conventional writings on Jammu & Kashmir. This timely volume will radically influence the existing discourse on Jammu & Kashmir. Please note: Taylor & Francis does not sell or distribute the Hardback in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka

Book excerpt: "A short review cannot do justice to the richness of this, or to the problems posed by its analytical framework...This is a thought-provoking, problematic even troubling volume with many excellent chapters." - The Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute "This book's strength is two-fold. First, as an edited volume it was delightfully cohesive, with each author considering the same set of basic questions, and utilizing the three grammars as a frame for examining identity in their various contexts...The second core strength for me is the fluid treatment of both structural and agentic aspects of identity...I found this a stimulating volume and think it has much to offer for readers interested in better understanding identity processes." - Anthropology and Education Quarterly Issues of the construction of Self and Other, normally in the context of social exclusion of those perceived as different, have assumed a new urgency. This collection offers a fresh perspective on the ongoing debates on these questions in the social sciences and the humanities by focusing specifically on one theoretical proposition, namely, that the seemingly universal processes of identity formation and exclusion of the 'other' can be differentiated according to three modalities. All contributors directly engage with rigorous empirical testing and theoretical cross-examination of this proposition. Their results have direct implications not only for a more differentiated understanding of collective identities, but also for a better understanding of extreme collective violence and genocide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After 1945, the face of Indian State of J&K was allowed to be painted by some to the benefit of external and internal disruptive elements. Not only this, questions like delayed accession of Indian State of Jammu and Kashmir, ‘conditional’ accession, Article 370 of Constitution of India, dual ‘citizenship’ for subjects of Jammu & Kashmir and ‘commitments’ made with Kashmiries have not been adequately addressed even by Government of India for six decades. Even Art370 of Constitution of India has been pushed into unfair controversies. Affairs concerning the Indian state of J&K have been the victim of mishandling. Local J&K political leadership has been resting her stakes more only on local governance. In 1950s the school children in J&K were told stories about one Maqbool Sherwani (a 19 yr youth who stood against ‘Pakistani’ invaders in October 1947) where as in 2014 one would hear more of Maqbool Bhat (founder of JKLF who was sentenced to death in 1968, who allegedly also masterminded hijacking of Indian aeroplane in 1971 to Lahore) who was hanged in Tihar Jail on 11th February 1984. All these years focus has remained more on Kashmir Valley only (just 10% of whole area), still common man there has been no less a sufferer, one would ask ‘Why’?

Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive and up-to-date analysis of the complex conflict situation in Kashmir. Through an internal perspective, it charts the shift in the Kashmiri response towards the Centre and offers a detailed examination of the background in which separatist politics took roots in Kashmir, and the way it changed its nature in the militancy and post-militancy period. The volume shows how separatism and armed militancy, as manifest in the Valley in the late 1980s, (though augmented by external factors) have been internal responses to the changing nature of Kashmiri identity politics. It explores how the ideas central to Indian nationalist politics — especially democracy and secularism — echoed in Kashmir and were instrumental in dismantling the feudal structure and negotiating an autonomous space within the framework of asymmetrical federalism. Seamlessly blending facts and incisive analyses, this book raises new questions about the nature of conflict and contestation in the region. It will be of great interest to researchers and scholars of Indian politics, especially on Jammu and Kashmir, and sociology, as well as government bodies, think tanks and the interested general reader.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book re-examines the multifaceted reality of the Kashmir problem. The state of Jammu and Kashmir had acceded to India soon after India’s partition. Pakistan laid claim to it waged wars with India to wrest it. The various decisions taken by the USA and Britain in conjunction with India and Pakistan as to how Kashmir should be governed are discussed. Studying the spread of communism, the book makes extensive use of primary resources available in India and the UK. The principal object of the author is to locate conflict in Kashmir within the international politics of the time, during the Cold War, and especially in the context of India’s relationship with the UK. The narratives of the discourse throw light on the varied and salient features of the problem. These have been enriched by an in-depth analysis based on the writings, notes and correspondence of distinguished British and Indian politicians and statesmen. The author has also consulted public documents on US foreign relations as well as other studies. This study explores myths about the Kashmir problem, reinforcing known and unknown truths.
