In October 1999, Pam Warren's life was turned on its head when she sustained horrific injuries in the Paddington rail crash. The casualties numbered thirty-one dead and over five hundred injured. Pam underwent scores of operations to rebuild her burnt body, and had to wear a plastic mask over her face for twenty-three hours a day over an eighteen-month period. Unwittingly, she became the public face of the disaster. Over a decade on from that terrible event, From Behind the Mask charts the true inside story of Pam's journey from victim to survivor and campaigner. Following the crash she became the UK's leading spokesperson for improving rail safety, battling with rail management executives and the government - and winning. She was branded a troublemaker, but Pam and fellow members of the Paddington Survivors' Group helped bring about great improvements on our railways. For years Pam remained focused on that campaign. Now, for the first time, she can tell us all what really happened. It is an inspirational story of determination and courage.

Book excerpt: Deeply involved in London's wartime black market, gangland lawyer Mark Abrahams worries for his life. Operating on both sides of the law he is desperate for a way out. His chance comes during a daytime raid in 1943. Returning from the bank he finds his building blitzed and his staff buried under three floors of smoking rubble and with them his partner Richard Ellis. But who is to say who died, he or Ellis? With GBP15000 in his suitcase he sees his chance to flee from London with another man's identity. By the spring of 1944 the reborn Richard Ellis has become an established solicitor in a small port on the Cornish coast but it is the affairs of the local gentry that awakens his interest. Silas Trevelyan, a miserly recluse is sitting on a family fortune. His vast estate of property and watermills dominates the river valley down to Creakside Manor. Next in line for succession is Bill Ives. Widowed with a small child, he marries Rachel, a flighty conscript from London. To cut her out of his fortunes, Silas alters his will, leaving everything to Bill's daughter, Charlotte. But when Bill is killed during the D-Day celebrations, Ellis realises that with some clever forgery, he can steer Silas' money his way. However, he underestimates both the Trevelyan cunning and the gutsy young Charlotte. Neither does he expect his past to catch up with him as it does when a schooner sails into the harbour in 1953. Its owner, U.S. naval officer Jack Lavelle is there to uncover the truth. Ellis, driven to murderous lengths to avoid disclosure, takes risk after risk to save his dream. But there is something else, triggered off by Ellis's own evil, that brings about the horrific ending none of them could have foreseen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the interwar period cinema and literature seemed to be at odds with each other, part of the continuing struggle between mass and elite culture which so worried writers such as Aldous Huxley, T.S. Eliot and the Leavises. And this cultural divide appeared to be sharp evidence of a deeper struggle for control of the nation’s consciousness, not only between dominant and oppositional elements within Britain, but between British and American vales as well. On the one hand, films like Sing As We Go, Proud Valley, and The Stars Look Down consolidated the assumptions about the existence of a national rather than separate class identities. On the other hand, working-class literature such as Love on the Dole articulated working-class experience in a manner intended to bridge the gap between the ‘Two Englands’. This book, originally published in 1987, examines how two of the most significant cultural forms in Britain contributed indirectly to the stability of Britain in the interwar crisis, helping to construct a new class alliance. A major element in the investigation is an analysis of the mechanics of the development of a national cultural identity, alongside separate working-class culture, the development of the lower-middle class and the implications of the intrusion of Hollywood culture. The treatment throughout is thematic rather than text-oriented – works of Graham Greene, George Orwell, Bert Coombes, Evelyn Waugh, the British Documentary Film Movement and Michael Balcon are included in the wide range of material covered.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late nineties, Wales (is) the centre for guitar bands in the UK so says John Robb in THE NINETIES and with bands as strikingly fresh and individual as Catatonia Welsh denomination looks assured. It has taken Catatonia eight years of hard work and persistance to gain the recognition and adulation that they so richly deserve, but finally Cerys' searing vocals and lilting guitar pop have made the breakthrough. Hardly surprisingly really, considering the wealth of talent that is Catatonia and the crest of the Welsh wave they are so assuredly riding. But as anyone will tell you, what makes Catatonia different from the rest, the Manic Street Preachers, Stereophonics and others, is Cerys. Cerys Matthews is fast becoming an icon in herself - a combination of sweetness and South Walesian toughness that is proving to be so endearing to her legion of fans. Often likened to Blondie, Cerys has graced more magazine covers than you care to mention, yet she is the sort of pop star who still sends away for free tights. This book will be the first to chart the rise and yet further rise of Catatonia, from Cerys busking outside Debenhams in Cardiff to their new found fame.

Book excerpt: Presenting a new approach to the study of youth culture and popular music, Beyond Subculture re-examines the link between music and subcultures and asks the question; in an ageing world, can pop music still be an automatic metaphor for youth culture? Using case studies and first-hand interviews with consumer and producers including Noel Gallagher and Talvin Singh, Rupa Huq investigates a series of musically-centred global youth cultures including hip-hop, electronic dance music and bhangra. With ‘Generation X’ becoming an increasingly redundant term, this book will help students redefine their ideas of youth culture and will be an invaluable addition to their studies.

The author salvages what relatively little is left. There are chapters on metaphysics, theory of knowledge, logic, language and ethics. It also briefly examines philosophy’s fractured history, it’s defects of method, some of the appalling influences it has had on history, politics and culture, as well as evaluating it’s worth and providing pointers to a truncated future. The book is accessible to the intelligent layman with no previous knowledge of philosophy, whereas most philosophy these days is written in technical language by university academics detailing small refinements to unprovable theories.

Book excerpt: Presenting a coherent interpretation of the development of economic and social policy in Britain since 1945, this book analyses the political assumptions underlying post-war economic policy. It traces these assumptions through the classic texts of Keynes and Beveridge, the architects of limited, non-socialist state intervention to secure the welfare state and full employment. Topics covered include: * 'Private saving' versus company pensions * The level and composition of employment in Britain
