Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about my kidnap thriller, The Locked Door. It is my second of four novels and none are really novels at all but something far more sinister. The idea was confinement. Why, I didn’t know; I just felt a need to express it. Naturally, I made it into a kidnap thriller. During my writing, I connected with this ‘strand’. This strand grew addictive, compulsive, shameful, deathly and creepy. Little did I realize the source of this strand. Not until the age of 51 when I learned something truly terrible about myself. The précis to The Locked Door reads: “This hostage has a secret. “Gemma would appear to have everything: money, a devoted husband, a lively son, and a fulfilling career. But her life takes a nasty turn when she is kidnapped and trapped in an upstairs room by three thugs demanding a huge ransom from her rich father. “In a bid to escape, she cuts a hole in the bedroom floor. From there, Gemma spies on her kidnappers below. That's when their hostage starts playing games with them. That’s when her spying pulls her into a treacherous psychological game that endangers her sanity.” As the story progressed, the captive’s life began to feel as real as mine. She became like an avatar that I would enter when I craved escapism from my otherwise mundane life. With the terrible truth now known, I have analysed The Locked Door. I am appalled at what I have found. This novel appears to possess a shadow novel beneath the apparent one. During the writing, I was completely oblivious to it. In order to convey the intensity of my other world, I have included illustrations and diary excerpts within this account.

Book excerpt: This book shares how you can recover from abuse by those you trusted within the church. It speaks to those who are wounded and feel they have no one to turn to for help. It also speaks to those that have been the cause of deep wounds inflected on the people of God. Behind Closed Doors was inspired by God through the pain of one of his daughters. She has been given the assignment to tear down the devils kingdom through prayer and exposure. I say to each of you take your rightful place in the kingdom. You are a citizen of the kingdom of God and with your citizenship you have certain rights. It is time to walk in the authority that has been given to you by the king.

Fear had been spread so far and so wide; there wasnt much hope left. But Karabeing so young and so shelteredwasnt completely aware. She knew only mere outlines and shadows of what was going on. She lived her comfortable, wealthy life with no worries at all. She knew he was dangerous. She knew there was something horribly wrong with him. So Kara ran. Death isnt something you can run from, however, as she soon learns. She cannot escape and is doomed. Except . . . even as she learns his horrid secret and lives with his lies and pain, she lives on. Kara grows comfortable with the life she never wanted and lives for much longer than anyone thought she would. Theodore is Death, nonetheless, and she dies at his mercy. Gone forever, she can only pray that her son doesnt meet the same fate. Her spirit lives, survives the countless ages, and tells her storyall of it. The story of innocence . . . of despair; of loss, love, and finally . . . her death. Skeletons dont stay behind locked doors for long. They come out, and when they do, things never go the way we may want them to. But even as Kara and so many others becomes just another skeleton locked behind Deaths doors, despair may reign but hope lingers still. Theodore never wanted any of it. All he had ever wanted was to grow old and watch his children and grandchildren grow up. He loved his wife and was very happy. That is until a horrible evil wrenches its way into Theodores happiness. Now immortal, his life shattered and torn, Theodore waits, wanting revenge. Time flies by, and he doesnt change. After so many lives hes taken, after so many losses hes suffered, the past still haunts him. The evil still lurks, and the world is powerless. Theodore is powerless. He has no peace, and all that he loves is stolen. Stolen by the ancient evil that he serves. The worst horror of all is yet to happen for him, and when it does, it brings about a powerful change. Whether the change is good or bad, Theodore has no idea. But he will soon find out.

I LOVE THIS BOOK' LEMN SISSAY 'A MUST-READ BOOK' JACQUELINE WILSON 'EXTRAORDINARY' OLIVER BULLOUGH 'EVERYONE SHOULD READ THIS BOOK' HILARY COTTAM Meet the mother whose children were taken away, and the father who fought for his son. Listen to the radical social worker, the judge, the lawyer. See inside the homes of foster carers, adoptive parents and children in care. Because behind closed doors, a scandal is ongoing. We now remove more children from their parents than ever before, more than any other western country. Not because of a rise in physical or sexual abuse, but because of complex factors that are overlooked and misunderstood. Children's Care is a system where fathers are ignored, and mothers are punished for experiencing abuse. Rife with prejudices about race, ableism and class, determined by a postcode lottery. Blind to poverty and its effects on family life. And, at its very worst, an exercise in social engineering that can never replace parental love. This is not a soft issue. Not a 'women and children' problem. It is a prism through which we can understand the deepest issues at play in politics, economics and society today, and it is happening behind closed doors. Because of legal restrictions against reporting in family courts, the uneasy work of social care and the shame poured on parents, these problems remain out of our sight. They are the subject of horror headlines or stale statistics. But family life is at the heart of who we are as people, and it is they who can help us understand. From North to South, rich and poor, Black and white, these are the people who know, first-hand, what is going wrong - and how we can fix it. These are their stories. Book excerpt: Since 1600, whenever a Pope dies, the Cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church convene in Rome to elect a successor. The Papal Conclave is an event like no other. Highly secret and conducted behind the locked doors of the Sistine Chapel, it happens about eight times every century. It is an event that has evolved over the centuries and is always filled with high drama: cardinals meeting en masse in their scarlet robes, throngs of the faithful standing watch in St. Peter's Square, the black or white smoke billowing from the chimney signalling the election of a new Pontiff Since secrecy was not heavily invoked until the twentieth century, there is a vast store of rich material to work from and Fred Baumgartner uses it to its utmost detailing the bickering and blatant politicking that goes on behind the locked doors of the Sistine Chapel in this important and timely book.

Book excerpt: What others in the trenches say about The Pragmatic Programmer... “The cool thing about this book is that it’s great for keeping the programming process fresh. The book helps you to continue to grow and clearly comes from people who have been there.” — Kent Beck, author of Extreme Programming Explained: Embrace Change “I found this book to be a great mix of solid advice and wonderful analogies!” — Martin Fowler, author of Refactoring and UML Distilled “I would buy a copy, read it twice, then tell all my colleagues to run out and grab a copy. This is a book I would never loan because I would worry about it being lost.” — Kevin Ruland, Management Science, MSG-Logistics “The wisdom and practical experience of the authors is obvious. The topics presented are relevant and useful.... By far its greatest strength for me has been the outstanding analogies—tracer bullets, broken windows, and the fabulous helicopter-based explanation of the need for orthogonality, especially in a crisis situation. I have little doubt that this book will eventually become an excellent source of useful information for journeymen programmers and expert mentors alike.” — John Lakos, author of Large-Scale C++ Software Design “This is the sort of book I will buy a dozen copies of when it comes out so I can give it to my clients.” — Eric Vought, Software Engineer “Most modern books on software development fail to cover the basics of what makes a great software developer, instead spending their time on syntax or technology where in reality the greatest leverage possible for any software team is in having talented developers who really know their craft well. An excellent book.” — Pete McBreen, Independent Consultant “Since reading this book, I have implemented many of the practical suggestions and tips it contains. Across the board, they have saved my company time and money while helping me get my job done quicker! This should be a desktop reference for everyone who works with code for a living.” — Jared Richardson, Senior Software Developer, iRenaissance, Inc. “I would like to see this issued to every new employee at my company....” — Chris Cleeland, Senior Software Engineer, Object Computing, Inc. “If I’m putting together a project, it’s the authors of this book that I want. . . . And failing that I’d settle for people who’ve read their book.” — Ward Cunningham Straight from the programming trenches, The Pragmatic Programmer cuts through the increasing specialization and technicalities of modern software development to examine the core process--taking a requirement and producing working, maintainable code that delights its users. It covers topics ranging from personal responsibility and career development to architectural techniques for keeping your code flexible and easy to adapt and reuse. Read this book, and you'll learn how to Fight software rot; Avoid the trap of duplicating knowledge; Write flexible, dynamic, and adaptable code; Avoid programming by coincidence; Bullet-proof your code with contracts, assertions, and exceptions; Capture real requirements; Test ruthlessly and effectively; Delight your users; Build teams of pragmatic programmers; and Make your developments more precise with automation. Written as a series of self-contained sections and filled with entertaining anecdotes, thoughtful examples, and interesting analogies, The Pragmatic Programmer illustrates the best practices and major pitfalls of many different aspects of software development. Whether you're a new coder, an experienced programmer, or a manager responsible for software projects, use these lessons daily, and you'll quickly see improvements in personal productivity, accuracy, and job satisfaction. You'll learn skills and develop habits and attitudes that form the foundation for long-term success in your career. You'll become a Pragmatic Programmer.

Raine Cameron is something different. Night after night, Seth watches her on a dozen different video screens. Her vulnerable beauty haunts him and her fresh innocence stirs a white-hot passion that he can barely control. Raine is pure temptation, but Seth has something more important to take care of first. He's convinced that his boss, Victor Lazar, is responsible for his half-brother's murder. He cannot put his secret investigation at risk, but he can't stop wanting her--craving her--and soon he knows he can't let Victor have her. For Raine may be Victor's next victim. . . Every Breath You Take Raine knows she's being watched--but no one can see the secrets in her heart. She has reasons of her own to seek revenge on Victor Lazar, and she will, despite her fear--and the distracting presence of Seth Mackey. Though Raine has little experience with men, Seth's fiercely masculine good looks and animal sensuality stir her most erotic fantasies when she's along. . .and lead her to a bold plan. Offering her body to him, surrendering totally to his ruthless desire might well push her beyond all emotional limits--and beyond fear itself.
