Abstract: This thesis presents both experimental and theoretical studies on the structural behaviour of externally confined concrete-filled-steel-tube (CFST) short columns under uni-axial compression. External confinement in the form of tie bars, steel rings, spirals and jackets is proposed. From the study, it can be concluded that the external confinement is highly effective in improving the uni-axial behaviour of CFST columns by improving confining stress and suppressing inelastic local buckling. The first part of the thesis covers the experimental behaviour of concentrically loaded confined CFST columns. The experimental programme involved testing a total of 208 specimens that consisted of 46 hollow-steel-tube columns with or without external confinement and CFST columns: 28 unconfined, 25 tie-confined, 77 ring-confined, 24 spiral-confined and 8 jacket-confined columns. The test results are summarized and discussed. From analysing the obtained experimental results, a better understanding of the structural behaviours, such as steel-concrete interface bonding, stress state of steel tube, behaviour of core concrete of CFST columns can be obtained. Besides, the test results obtained are useful for deriving and verifying theoretical models in this study. In the second part of the thesis, a theoretical stress-strain model is proposed based on the obtained test results. This model is obtained through a four-step procedure. As the first crucial step, a new and accurate hoop strain equation is proposed and verified based on experimental results. Having validated the assumption of stress path independence of the core concrete in CFST columns under monotonic uni-axial compression, an actively confined concrete constitutive model is adopted to predict the axial stress-strain response of the core concrete. Next, with the aid of Generalized Hooke's Law and Prandtl-Reuss theory, the complicated stress-state of steel tube is accurately modelled. Lastly, by using the newly proposed hoop strain equation together with the interaction models among the core concrete, steel tube and external confinement, the uni-axial behaviours of CFST columns can be predicted. The validity of this model is subsequently verified with the author's and published experimental results of CFST columns and FRP-confined concrete. Finally, a parametric study using the proposed model is conducted in this thesis, involving a wide range of parameters, i.e. steel tube yield strength, concrete compressive strength, steel ratio (steel tube outer diameter / thickness) and external confinement (types and arrangements). From the parametric study, two sets of critical steel ratios based on two levels of ductility at different steel yield and concrete compressive strengths are established. Moreover, the maximum column strengths of CFST columns obtained from the model and previous experimental studies are compared with the design strengths calculated using different design codes and the results indicate that the design codes cannot give reasonably accurate predictions. Therefore, new design equations are proposed in this thesis to predict the maximum strength of the CFST columns. Subjects: Concrete-filled tubes

Abstract: For the past twenty years, more and more attention has been drawn to the "performance-based design" of structures due to the concerns of earthquakes, dynamic impact, wind loads and so on. As a result, the ductility of a building has become an important aspect on par with its strength. As far as construction material is concerned, concrete structures have been the most prevalent in these years. As a matter of fact, the ductility of concrete structures is inferior to that of steel structures. However, recent studies have proved that the confinement effect will improve the strength and the ductility of concrete. In traditional concrete construction, confinement is provided by transverse steel hoops placed inside the concrete members with certain spacings, i.e. discontinuously. New forms of concrete structures, such as concrete columns confined by fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) and concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns, are therefore proposed to enhance the efficiency of confinement, since the concrete in these structures is confined continuously. The mechanisms of uniform and isotropic confinement effect in FRP-confined concrete columns and CFST columns have been well studied, and the existing theoretical models can be applied to those typical load cases, such as FRP-confined circular concrete columns and circular CFST columns under axial compression. But the research on the mechanisms of non-uniform and anisotropic confinement effect is still evolving, in order to predict the behaviour of confined concrete columns with sections of various shapes under combined axial loads and bending moments. Usually finite element (FE) method is used to analyse such complicated problems. However, in a lot of current studies using FE method, the dilation angle of plastic flow of concrete is often treated as a constant, which does not reflect the observed behaviour of concrete regarding the variation of volumetric strain under triaxial compression. In reality, the volume of concrete will eventually expand due to the propagation of splitting cracks, and the true dilatancy of concrete should be non-linear. In this study, a new FE model is developed through Fortran 90 to account for the nonlinearity of the dilatancy of concrete, and verified against several load cases with non-uniform and anisotropic confinement effect, i.e. eccentrically loaded FRP-confined circular concrete columns, axially loaded FRP-confined rectangular concrete columns and eccentrically loaded CFST columns. Moreover, a simplified method is also proposed to provide quick estimations on the behaviour of circular CFST columns under eccentric compression. Subjects: Columns, Concrete - Testing

Book excerpt: Global warming, caused by a significant increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases (GHGs) such as CO2, has become a concern all over the world. The whole process carbon emissions of the civil engineering industry account for nearly 40% of global energy and process-related CO2 emissions, more than half of which come from the process of producing, using, constructing and dismantling in civil engineering materials and structures, resulting in the embodied carbon emissions. With the acceleration of global warming, warmer and uncertain climates will make engineering materials and structures subject to more severe environmental conditions. A series of durability issues will occur more frequently, such as the significant variations of humidity in air, the chloride-induced corrosion caused by the severe chloride ingress, concrete cracking caused by the expansion of rusts, and more severe carbonation of concrete structures due to the increase in CO2 concentration. The adoption of positive measures to address climate change has become a global consensus, as global warming has led to serious threats and challenges to the survival and development of humankind.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A new type of composite structural system has been proposed in terms of FRP-concrete-steel double-skin tubular columns (DSTCs). This composite system consists of a steel tube inside, an FRP tube outside with concrete in between, and it combines the advantages of all three materials to achieve a high-performance structural member. This thesis is aimed at developing an improved understanding of the axial compressive behavior of DSTCs. To this end, six experimental studies were undertaken at the University of Adelaide. In each of these studies, the key parameters that influence the axial compressive behavior of DSTCs were identified and investigated. The results of these experimental studies indicate that concrete in a DSTC system is confined effectively by FRP and steel tubes. Both the normal-and high-strength concrete DSTCs exhibited a highly ductile compressive behavior under monotonic and cyclic axial compression. However, it is found that, for a given nominal confinement ratio, an increase in the concrete strength results in a decrease in the ultimate axial strain of DSTCs. The results also indicate that increasing the inner steel tube diameter leads to an increase in the ultimate axial stress and strain of concrete in DSTCs. It is observed that the concrete-filling of the inner steel tubes of DSTCs results in an increase in the compressive strength and a slight decrease in the ultimate axial strain of concrete in DSTCs, compared to the values observed in companion specimens with hollow inner steel tubes. It is also observed that cyclically loaded normal-strength concrete (NSC) DSTCs developed similar strength and strain enhancement ratios to those of monotonically loaded NSC DSTCs. The results also show that concrete in hollow DSTCs manufactured with square inner steel tubes develops significantly lower ultimate axial stresses and strains than those of concrete in companion hollow DSTCs with circular inner steel tubes. It is found, however, that the performance of these specimens improves dramatically when the square inner steel tube is filled with concrete. Apart from these experimental studies, this thesis also presents analytical models that were developed to predict the compressive strength and ultimate axial strain of concrete in DSTCs. The first of these models was developed to predict the compressive strength and ultimate axial strain of concrete in hollow circular DSTCs. After undertaking additional studies to expand the test database of square and concrete-filled DSTCs a second model that is applicale both circular and square and hollow and concrete-filled DSTCs was proposed. Comparison with experimental test results show that of the proposed models are in close agreement with the test results, and the models provide improved accuracy compared to the existing models." -- abstract, pages vii-viii.
