Book excerpt: Fibre-reinforced polymers (FRPs) are becoming increasingly accepted in structural engineering applications. In particular, Carbon-FRP (CFRP) tendons are proving to be promising as prestressing reinforcement for concrete structures. While several studies have been conducted on CFRP-prestressed concrete beams, very little attention has been given to their long-term behaviour at low temperatures. This thesis investigates the behaviour of CFRP prestressed concrete beams in two studies: (a) under sustained loading at low temperature, and (b) under high-cycle fatigue at low temperature. Seven 13 year old, 4.4 m long precast concrete T beams were tested, of which five were prestressed to various levels with CFRP tendons and two with conventional steel strands. In the first study, three beams were exposed to -27 °C while being subjected to a sustained load of 25% of their flexural capacity for 163 days. The sustained load produced cracking in two beams with lower prestress levels. Results were compared to those obtained from three similar beams subjected to the same sustained load at room temperature. Deflection increase under sustained load at low temperature was generally small and similar to that at room temperature. Prestressing strain had a direct relationship with temperature in the CFRP prestressed beams. After being subjected to sustained loading, all seven beams were tested in the second study. Only three of the five CFRP prestressed beams were subjected to cyclic loading, one at -28 °C and two at room temperature, while only one of the two steel prestressed beams was subjected to cyclic loading, at -28 °C. Cyclic loading consisted of 3 million cycles at a frequency of 0.85 Hz. The load range represented 21 to 42% of the flexural capacity of the CFRP prestressed beams and 30 to 60% of that of the steel-prestressed beam. Monotonic tests were run every 1 million cycles. Finally, all seven beams were monotonically loaded to failure. All CFRP prestressed beams survived the 3 million cycles but the steel prestressed beam failed after 185,000 cycles. However, the CFRP concrete bond was weakened by high prestress levels, cyclic loading, and low temperature during sustained loading and loading to failure. This resulted in bond failure at loads ranging from 69 to 91% of the full flexural capacity. Stiffness and camber gradually decreased during cyclic loading.

Much research has been conducted over the last two decades to evaluate the use of Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRPs) in concrete structures. Structural engineering researchers have been testing FRP to determine their usability instead of steel for strengthening existing reinforced concrete structures, reinforcing new concrete members, and for prestressed concrete applications. The high strength-to-weight ratio of FRP materials, especially Carbon FRP (CFRP), and their non-corrosive nature are probably the most attractive features of FRPs. In this study, an experimental program was conducted to investigate the flexural behavior of prestressed concrete beams pre-tensioned with CFRP strands. The bond characteristics were examined by means of experimentally measuring transfer length, flexural bond length, and bond stress profiles. A total of four rectangular beams pre-tensioned with one 0.5-in. diameter CFRP strand were fabricated and tested under cyclic loading for five cycles, followed by a monotonically increasing load until failure. In investigating bond properties, the experimental results were compared to the equations available in the literature. The results from the four flexural tests showed that the main problem of CFRP strands, in addition to their liner-elastic tensile behavior, was lack of adequate bonding between FRP and concrete. Poor bonding resulted in early failure due to slippage between FRPs and concrete. As a result, a new technique was developed in order to solve the bonding issues and improve the flexural response of CFRP prestressed concrete beams. The new technique involved anchoring the CFRP strands at the ends of the concrete beams using a new "steel tube" anchorage system. It was concluded that the new technique solved the bond problem and improved the flexural capacity by about 46%. A computer model was created to predict the behavior of prestressed beams pre-tensioned with CFRP. The predicted behavior was compared to the experimental results. Finally, the experimental results were compared to the behavior of prestressed concrete beams pre-tensioned with steel strands as generated by the computer model. The CFRP beams showed higher strength but lower ductility.

This report reprints a collection of studies advancing the knowledge of the effects of fatigue loading on the structural behavior of prestressed concrete flexural members. Each study represents one phase of an extensive research program conducted at Lehigh University and sponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, the Federal Highway Administration, and the Reinforced Concrete Research Council. The four areas of study are: the effect of stress gradient on the probable fatigue life of plain concrete, as related to the compression block of prestressed concrete flexural members; the probable fatigue life of seven-wire prestressing strand under repeated loading of either constant or varied magnitude; the probable fatigue life of prestressed concrete flexural members, as limited by the fatigue failure of the prestressing strand; and the susceptibility of prestressed concrete flexural members to fatigue failure in shear. This report provides guidance to structural engineers faced with the design or analysis of prestressed concrete flexural members and to research engineers who are seeking to extend the knowledge of structural behavior as affected by repeated loading.

Book excerpt: Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) can be effectively utilized in structures as rods, sheets, bars, and tendons due to its high strength-to-weight ratio, non-corrosiveness, non-magnetic properties, and its flexibility. FRPs include carbon fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRPs), aramid fiber-reinforced polymers (AFRPs), and glass fiber-reinforced polymers (GFRPs). Previous studies have investigated these materials under various load conditions and in a variety of structures, including prestressed concrete beams reinforced with CFRP, which has the highest tensile modulus out of all the FRP varieties. The increasing popularity of FRP as a reinforcement particularly as prestressing tendons in concrete structures is prompting research to more accurately predict the behavior of such structures under various types of loading and boundary conditions. Although many studies have investigated the flexural behavior of beams reinforced with FRP, few studies have focused on their complex shear behavior. Design guidelines in the U.S. such as ACI440.4R-04 and AASHTO 2018 have been published to support the design of structures using FRP. The objective of this thesis was to evaluate these guidelines for accuracy in predicting nominal shear capacity using prestressed concrete beams reinforced with CFRP. This study also aimed to offer alternative solutions to improve calculations of nominal shear capacity for prestressed beams reinforced with CFRP tendons.

Book excerpt: Over the past 20 years, the Transport and Road Research Laboratory has carried out a co-ordinated programme of fatigue testing, including work on the fatigue performance of reinforced and pre-stressed concrete beams. The research has led to a better understanding of the fatigue behaviour of plain concrete, the various types of reinforcing bars in air and concrete, continuous welded, lapped and coupled bars, and the effects of corrosion. The work of TRRL and many other organizations is reviewed and a summary of current design rules with recommendations for assessing the fatigue life of new structures in service is given.

Book excerpt: Four specimens were tested to evaluate the shear performance of beams with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates and CFRP anchors under fatigue and sustained loading applications. The specimens consisted of 24-in. deep T-beams that were constructed and tested at Phil M. Ferguson Structural Engineering Laboratory at the University of Texas at Austin. The specimens were strengthened in shear with CFRP laminates anchored with CFRP anchors. One end of each specimen was strengthened using bonded CFRP laminates while the other end was strengthened using unbonded CFRP laminates. Two specimens were used for fatigue testing and two were used for sustained load testing. For each set of tests, one specimen was strengthened using CFRP laminates prior to cracking and one specimen was strengthened using CFRP laminates following the initial cracking of the specimen. The CFRP laminates showed no signs of deteriorations in strength during fatigue testing, with only small increases in strain occurring in the CFRP laminates during testing. After fatigue loading was completed, the specimens were monotonically loaded to failure. The failure loads were 5 to 15% lower than beams that were not subjected to fatigue loading. Sustained load tests were subjected to a constant midpoint load based on service load requirements for a period of 217 days. CFRP laminates performed well during sustained loading. CFRP strains increased slightly throughout testing, but no signs of deterioration were observed. For both types of tests, specimens strengthened using bonded CFRP laminates demonstrated an increased stiffness resulting in smaller crack widths and lower strains in the internal steel. These benefits were not as great in specimens strengthened after the initial cracking of the specimen.

Book excerpt: Improvement in the short-term behavior of deficient reinforced concrete (RC) beams is very well known through extensive testing of reinforced concrete beams strengthened by externally bonded carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) strips. However, long-term performance of such beams needs to be assessed before the method can gain full acceptance. Modeling of the overall system of CFRP strengthened RC beams requires modeling of the individual components that ultimately leads to failure i.e., concrete, CFRP and concrete-CFRP interface. Component elasto-damage constitutive models are developed for concrete crushing, CFRP plate rupture and concrete-CFRP interface failure, calibrated by data from both suitably designed experiments and from experiments reported in literature, and are utilized to investigate the low cycle fatigue behavior of reinforced concrete beams strengthened by CFRP strips. The predictive ability of the models is tested by comparison to data from two different beam strengthening schemes i.e., with end anchorage and without end anchorage.
