Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychopharmacology, Volume 2: Preclinical Psychopharmacology presents the mechanism of action of antidepressant drugs and neuroleptics. This book discusses the significance of the interaction between various neurotransmitter system in both biochemical and functional consequences of repeated drug administration. Organized into 12 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the effects of antidepressant drugs on norepinephrine metabolism. This text then discusses the different aspects of monoamine oxidase and its inhibitors. Other chapters consider the mechanism of action of lithium, which requires consideration of some of the general characteristics of periodic behavior. This book discusses as well the preclinical aspects of tranquilizers, particularly those dealing with benzodiazepines and non-benzodiazepines acting through the benzodiazepine receptor. The final chapter deals with the various behavioral and electrophysiological effects of cocaine in animals, which presumably reflect both local anesthetic properties and action on monoamine mechanisms. This book is a valuable resource for neuropharmacologists and practicing psychiatrists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behavioural models in psychopharmacology are used for different purposes. The main concern of industrial psychopharmacologists is specifically to develop new and improved drugs for the treatment of mental disorders, while basic scientists use animal models to investigate the underlying nature of such conditions. The important distinction between these different perspectives is made explicit for the first time in this book. By considering such conditions as anxiety, depression, mania and schizophrenia, feeding disorders, dementia, and drug dependence, this book provides a comprehensive and critical review of the adequacy of the behavioural procedures used by psychopharmacologists to model psychiatric disorders. Graduate students and research workers in pscyhopharmacology, from both academic and industrial spheres, as well as clinicians, will find this book of considerable interest.

Book excerpt: Behavioral pharmacology studies the biological bases of behavior and the pharmacological effects of natural or synthetic drugs through behavioral analysis, with the identification of substances that could contribute to improvement of the quality of life for humans. Through behavioral pharmacology, it is possible to generate knowledge about pharmacological bases that influence the normal or altered behavior from a multidisciplinary point of view, and which includes diverse areas of science. The purpose of this book “Behavioral Pharmacology- From Basic to Clinical Research” is to show some of the advances in the identification of pharmacological properties of natural and synthetic molecules that may be used in the development of pharmacological therapies destined for the treatment of illness and disorders that affect the wellness of humans.

Examples of drugs within this group include LSD, psilocybin, and mescaline. Despite their structural differences, these compounds produce remarkably similar experiences in humans and share a common mechanism of action. Commonalities among the substances in this family are addressed both at the clinical and phenomenological level and at the basic neurobiological mechanism level. To the extent possible, contributions relate the clinical and preclinical findings to one another across species. The volume addresses both the risks associated with the use of these drugs and the potential medical benefits that might be associated with these and related compounds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of drugs on behavior are of inherent interest and psycho pharmacology has provided a focus for research activity for many years. Until recently, however, it could be claimed that the contribution of pharmacology was more obvious than that of psychology in the de velopment of what should surely prove to be a matter for interdis ciplinary endeavor. Pharmacological analyses of drug action have frequently been expressed in terms of dose-response functions, for ex ample, with the dependent variable taking the form of patterns of be havior whose controlling influences were but poorly understood. The introduction of operant conditioning techniques has transformed psy chopharmacology in this respect. Operant analyses have traditionally emphasized the environmental determinants of behavior and have ex plored the behavioral outcomes of many different experimental ar rangements. These different behavioral repertoires have quickly proved to be of great importance in influencing the behavioral effects of drugs, and so psychologists have begun to playa role which better balances that of the pharmacologist in experimental psychophar macology. To reflect the development of these interdisciplinary studies, several excellent books have been published in recent years. These 1 have included introductory texts, collections of important experi mental reports which had appeared in learnedjournals,2 and authorita 3 tive handbooks which survey the current scene.
