This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fish are extremely successful vertebrates. Because of a long and divergent history they are now found in almost every conceiv able aquatic habitat. This radiation has been accompanied by great diversity in structure, physiology, and behaviour. Despite this variability, fish must solve a number of basic problems that are common to all animals. The most important of these are: (1) to find and ingest appropriate food; (2) to avoid predation; and (3) to reproduce. The main purpose of this book is to describe the variety of behavioural strategies that fish use in coping with these problems. My approach has been to draw together material from both field and laboratory work that is widely scattered in the litera ture. The major emphasis is on field studies, since my main concern is with adaptive solutions to problems, and I believe these are most likely to be correctly perceived by workers who are familiar with the natural ecological setting of their animals. Of course, many details of behaviour cannot be seen and quantified adequately in the field, and therefore I have not ignored laboratory studies. However, even here I have concen trated on work that illustrates the variety of solutions that fish use to solve the three basic problems. Much important work, for instance on causation, development, and learning, is not included.

Book Synopsis Restoring Diversity by : Donald A. Falk
Download or read book Restoring Diversity written by Donald A. Falk and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reintroduction of rare and endangered species to their natural habitat is one of emerging tools of ecosystem management. Yet despite hundreds of ongoing projects, the biological underpinnings of such activity are poorly understood, and important questions remain. Restoring Diversity provides biological, policy, and regulatory foundations for successful restoration of rare plants. Topics considered include the strategic and legal context for rare plant restoration, the biology of restoration, use (and misuse) of mitigation in rare plant conservation, and case studies from across the United States. Restoring Diversity presents model guidelines for the reintroduction of endangered plants - guidelines that incorporate ideas contained in the book's chapters with the wide-ranging experience of experts in the field. It is a pathbreaking work that not only unifies concepts in the field of restoration, but also fills significant technical and policy gaps and provides operational tools for successful restorations.

Book Synopsis Molecular Approaches to the Study of the Ocean by : K.E. Cooksey
Download or read book Molecular Approaches to the Study of the Ocean written by K.E. Cooksey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine biological science is now studied at the molecular level and although research scientists depend on information gained using molecular techniques, there is no book explaining the philosophy of this approach. Molecular Approaches to the Study of the Ocean introduces the reasons why molecular technology is such a powerful tool in the study of the oceans, describing the types of techniques that can be used, why they are useful and gives examples of their application. Molecular biological techniques allow phylogenetic relationships to be explored in a manner that no macroscopic method can; although the book deals with organisms near the base of the marine food web, the ideas can be used in studies of macroorganisms as well as those in freshwater environments.

Book Synopsis Fluctuations in Age Composition and Growth Rate of Cutthroat Trout in Yellowstone Lake by : Ross V. Bulkley
Download or read book Fluctuations in Age Composition and Growth Rate of Cutthroat Trout in Yellowstone Lake written by Ross V. Bulkley and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Age composition, growth rate, and year-class strength of Yellowstone Lake cutthroat trout from collections made in 1948 and from 1950 to 1959 are analyzed to relate total catch changes in age composition and growth rate. An increase in growth rate of fish fully recruited to the fishery and a decrease in percentages of fish belonging to age groups VI and VII are attributed to an increase in fishing pressure. Mean age of the catch varied with year-length of the catch has remained high, suggesting that production is more efficient now than in past years. Maximum equilibrium yield may be near. If the catch continues to increase at the present rate, it may become excessive within the next few years.
