Much research has been conducted over the last two decades to evaluate the use of Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRPs) in concrete structures. Structural engineering researchers have been testing FRP to determine their usability instead of steel for strengthening existing reinforced concrete structures, reinforcing new concrete members, and for prestressed concrete applications. The high strength-to-weight ratio of FRP materials, especially Carbon FRP (CFRP), and their non-corrosive nature are probably the most attractive features of FRPs. In this study, an experimental program was conducted to investigate the flexural behavior of prestressed concrete beams pre-tensioned with CFRP strands. The bond characteristics were examined by means of experimentally measuring transfer length, flexural bond length, and bond stress profiles. A total of four rectangular beams pre-tensioned with one 0.5-in. diameter CFRP strand were fabricated and tested under cyclic loading for five cycles, followed by a monotonically increasing load until failure. In investigating bond properties, the experimental results were compared to the equations available in the literature. The results from the four flexural tests showed that the main problem of CFRP strands, in addition to their liner-elastic tensile behavior, was lack of adequate bonding between FRP and concrete. Poor bonding resulted in early failure due to slippage between FRPs and concrete. As a result, a new technique was developed in order to solve the bonding issues and improve the flexural response of CFRP prestressed concrete beams. The new technique involved anchoring the CFRP strands at the ends of the concrete beams using a new "steel tube" anchorage system. It was concluded that the new technique solved the bond problem and improved the flexural capacity by about 46%. A computer model was created to predict the behavior of prestressed beams pre-tensioned with CFRP. The predicted behavior was compared to the experimental results. Finally, the experimental results were compared to the behavior of prestressed concrete beams pre-tensioned with steel strands as generated by the computer model. The CFRP beams showed higher strength but lower ductility.

Book excerpt: Fibre-reinforced polymers (FRPs) are becoming increasingly accepted in structural engineering applications. In particular, Carbon-FRP (CFRP) tendons are proving to be promising as prestressing reinforcement for concrete structures. While several studies have been conducted on CFRP-prestressed concrete beams, very little attention has been given to their long-term behaviour at low temperatures. This thesis investigates the behaviour of CFRP prestressed concrete beams in two studies: (a) under sustained loading at low temperature, and (b) under high-cycle fatigue at low temperature. Seven 13 year old, 4.4 m long precast concrete T beams were tested, of which five were prestressed to various levels with CFRP tendons and two with conventional steel strands. In the first study, three beams were exposed to -27 °C while being subjected to a sustained load of 25% of their flexural capacity for 163 days. The sustained load produced cracking in two beams with lower prestress levels. Results were compared to those obtained from three similar beams subjected to the same sustained load at room temperature. Deflection increase under sustained load at low temperature was generally small and similar to that at room temperature. Prestressing strain had a direct relationship with temperature in the CFRP prestressed beams. After being subjected to sustained loading, all seven beams were tested in the second study. Only three of the five CFRP prestressed beams were subjected to cyclic loading, one at -28 °C and two at room temperature, while only one of the two steel prestressed beams was subjected to cyclic loading, at -28 °C. Cyclic loading consisted of 3 million cycles at a frequency of 0.85 Hz. The load range represented 21 to 42% of the flexural capacity of the CFRP prestressed beams and 30 to 60% of that of the steel-prestressed beam. Monotonic tests were run every 1 million cycles. Finally, all seven beams were monotonically loaded to failure. All CFRP prestressed beams survived the 3 million cycles but the steel prestressed beam failed after 185,000 cycles. However, the CFRP concrete bond was weakened by high prestress levels, cyclic loading, and low temperature during sustained loading and loading to failure. This resulted in bond failure at loads ranging from 69 to 91% of the full flexural capacity. Stiffness and camber gradually decreased during cyclic loading.

Book excerpt: Currently, degradation of pretensioned prestressed reinforced concrete (PRC) bridge structures is a serious problem in the United States of America. Since 2000, the use of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) is well studied and has become an accepted method to rehabilitate concrete bridges. Design engineers use the ACI 440.2R-17 to determine strength requirements. Additionally, evaluating the deflection of strengthened PRC members is required during the restoration/strengthening design. ACI 440.2R-17 relies on ACI 318-19 for deflection calculations and limits prestressing from yielding under service load levels. This dissertation examines the application of the effective moment of inertia equation given in ACI 318-19 for the determination of deflection after cracking of PRC beams externally strengthened with carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP). The results reported in this dissertation deal with the behavior of partially prestressed concrete beams strengthened with high strength composites. The three major parts discussed are experimental work, analytical investigations, and a parametric study. Experimental results obtained by other researchers were used to verify the results of the analytical procedures developed. The parametric study provides information on the moment-curvature and load-deflection behavior of strengthened pretensioned prestressed concrete flexural members externally strengthened with fiber-reinforced polymers that can be obtained for various concrete strengths, reinforcement ratios, and varying cross-sections. An analytical model was developed to predict the flexural rigidity of pretensioned, partially prestressed concrete beams that are externally strengthened with high strength composites. CFRP sheets were used for the derivation of equations. The proposed model is based on principles of mechanics and the sectional equations available for the analysis of partially prestressed beams. The model is applicable to the full range of prestressed concrete members covering partially and fully prestressed concrete, straight or harped strands, with or without supplemental mild-reinforcing steel, and varying loading conditions. The procedure can be used to generate the entire load-deflection response and through performing the moment-curvature analysis and estimation of stresses and strains in addition to computing the effective flexural stiffness of the strengthened prestressed member. Comparisons of experimental and analytical results show that deflection can be predicted with good accuracy using the developed modified effective moment of inertia equation. The parametric investigation was conducted on the effect of the basic variables namely, cross-section, concrete compressive strength, prestressing steel ratio, amount of carbon fibers, modulus of elasticity of prestressing steel-to-modulus of elasticity of CFRP ratio, modulus of elasticity of carbon fiber composite, spans, and shear span-to-span ratios. The goal of this investigation was conducted to understand the effect of CFRP strengthening to the flexural stiffness. Rectangular cross-sections with straight bonded prestressing tendons strengthened with 1 to 5 layers of unidirectional carbon sheets were analyzed in the parametric study. Lastly, the application of the proposed effective moment of inertia equation to bonded, pretensioned prestressed members, with harped strands depressed at midspan, externally strengthened with CFRP is examined in comparison with the experimental and analytical response curves.

Book excerpt: This research involves an experimental investigation into the effects of thermal characteristics of different types of FRP on the development of thermal stresses and on the control of thermal cracking in reinforced concrete (RC) and partially prestressed concrete (PPC) beams. A total of eleven RC and PPC beams using FRP rebars were tested. The test program consisted of two series; RC series and PPC series. The eleven beams had the same concrete cross-section dimensions. The RC series consisted of six beams. Three of the beams were reinforced with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) rods of different amounts. The other three beams were reinforced with glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) grids known as NEFMAC. Different locations of the grid were used in the three beams. The PPC series consisted of two pretensioned beams and two post-tensioned beams using Leadline rods, in addition to one beam post-tensioned with prestressing steel strand. The Leadline rods and the steel strand were prestressed with the same force but were located at different eccentricities from the cross-section centroid.

Book excerpt: The use of unbonded tendons in prestressed concrete beams has been widely utilized in bridges, parking structures, and residential buildings for strengthening, rehabilitation or repair of such members. With the growth of live load and the increase of damaged concrete members, there is a need to develop and utilize new techniques for more efficient and improved designs in prestressed concrete members. This research presents an experimental and analytical investigation for the use of combination of bonded and unbonded tendons in the same concrete members. With the availability of high strength concrete, as well as the development of new prestressing technologies, the process can be easily performed at the site for repair or capacity upgrading resulting in longer spans for the same section depth or shallower sections. There is a knowledge gap on the behavior of concrete beams prestressed with hybrid tendons and a need to fully understand their overall behavior under full service loads. The hybrid technique introduces unbonded CFRP tendons, which is resistant to corrosion. In addition, CFRP tendons exhibit linear stress-strain relationship resulting in more accurate predictions for the tendon stress at ultimate. This hybrid system presents a challenge in developing an analytical model that could predict their behavior since the unbonded tendon is not bonded with the concrete. This investigation included the testing of 15 High Strength Concrete (HSC) beams prestressed with hybrid tendons. Results from the experimental study included number of cracks, load-deflection behavior, and strains in prestressing strand, reinforcing steel, and concrete. This study emphasizes the prediction of the ultimate stress of the unbonded tendon (fps) in unbonded or hybrid system for computing the ultimate moment resistance. Finite element modeling and analysis of various beams is performed. Based on a comparison of equations available in the literature as well as code provisions with the experimental results, a simplified prediction equation for predicting the stress in the unbonded tendons at ultimate is recommended.
