Book excerpt: A comprehensive research project was conducted to investigate the behaviour and design of earthquake resistant normal-strength and high-strength concrete columns. The project included three essential components; testing of full size columns, development of an analytical model, and development of a design procedure. The experimental program consisted of material research and structural testing. The first phase was designed to study mechanical properties of high-strength concrete, which involved testing of a large number of concrete cylinders. The second phase was designed to investigate performance of confined normal and high-strength concrete columns under concentric compression. The experimental program included tests of 46 full size square and circular columns, with concrete strength ranging between 60 MPa and 124 MPa. The parameters considered included; cross-sectional shape (circular and square), volumetric ratio and spacing of transverse reinforcement, distribution of longitudinal reinforcement and resulting tie arrangement, yield strength of transverse reinforcement, concrete compressive strength, influence of longitudinal reinforcement in circular columns, and type of circular reinforcement (continuous spiral and circular hoops). The analytical component of the research program involved development of a mathematical model to represent stress-strain relationship of confined concrete. This was done in two steps. The first step included formulation of the relationship for normal strength concrete, for which extensive test data was available. The second step involved modification of the model for high-strength concrete. An extensive literature survey was first conducted, followed by evaluation of previous test data. This information was used, along with the results of the experimental phase of this investigation to develop a generalized cofinement model for normal-strength and high-strength concrete columns. The analytical and experimental research was used in developing a design procedure for confinement of earthquake resistant concrete columns. The procedure includes all the relevant parameters of confinement that have been observed to be important in column tests, and relates the design variables to deformation capacities. A displacement based design methodology was developed, where the lateral drift demand is a design parameter. This approach leads to different confinement steel requirements for columns with different deformability demands, an approach currently lacking in practice. Furthermore, the reinforcement arrangement is recognized as a design parameter, allowing lower volumetric ratio of confinement reinforcement for efficient arrangements. This may result in significant savings in steel, eliminating the common problem of steel congestion in earthquake resistant columns. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).

Book excerpt: The use of high-strength concrete for bridges and high-rise buildings become popular due to development in concrete technology and availability of various types of mineral and chemical admixtures. High-strength concrete could lead to smaller member sizes for compression members and therefore provide considerable savings associated with material costs and reduction of dead loads. However, Most of the current design codes, such as AASHTO-LRFD Bridge Specifications, are still based on tests conducted using normal-strength concrete. Many studies indicate that the behavior of columns with high-strength concrete is different from that of normal-strength concrete. The experimental phase of this investigation consists of thirty two rectangular and twenty four circular columns subjected to concentric and eccentric loading conditions to investigate the behavior of high-strength concrete columns. The main variables considered in this study were concrete strength ranging from 7.9 to 16.5 ksi, shape of cross section, and longitudinal and transverse reinforcement ratios. Using the test results of this study and other researches in literature, the dissertation provides design equation to predict the capacity of high-strength concrete columns with tie and spiral reinforcements subjected to concentric and eccentric loading conditions up to 18 ksi. The research also proposes a new stress-strain relationship of high-strength concrete confined with spiral reinforcements.

Properties of columns were selected to allow assessment of the importance of confinement parameters for high-strength concrete columns. The specimens were tested under constant axial compression and incrementally increasing lateral deformation reversals, simulating seismic action. The data indicate that high-strength concrete columns can be confined to behave in a ductile manner. The volumetric ratio of confinement reinforcement required for high strength concrete columns is higher than that required for normal-strength concrete columns, although the spacing requirement does not appear to be a function of concrete strength. Columns confined with higher grade lateral reinforcement require lower volumetric ratios of confinement steel. The arrangement of lateral reinforcement plays an important role on improving deformability. Columns confined with well-distributed longitudinal reinforcement, laterally supported by transverse reinforcement show improved deformability. The volumetric ratio and spacing limitations for these columns need not be as stringent as those required for less favourable steel arrangements. Axial compression reduces column ductility. An analytical investigation was also conducted to assess the applicability of conventional analyses techniques used for normal-strength concrete columns to those made with high-strength concrete. The applicability of a confinement model, based on test data under concentric compression, was verified against experimental data. The results indicate that the confinement model can be employed to columns under combined bending and axial load. Furthermore, moment-curvature relationships obtained by plane section analysis, moment-rotation and force-displacement relationships obtained by integration of curvatures and consideration of column plastic hinging region, as usually done for columns with normal-strength concrete, produce fairly accurate representation of experimentally observed force-deformation relationships. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analysis of concrete columns using unconfined concrete models is a well established practice. On the other hand, prediction of the actual ultimate capacity of confined concrete columns requires specialized nonlinear analysis. Modern codes and standards are introducing the need to perform extreme event analysis. There has been a number of studies that focused on the analysis and testing of concentric columns or cylinders. This case has the highest confinement utilization since the entire section is under confined compression. On the other hand, the augmentation of compressive strength and ductility due to full axial confinement is not applicable to pure bending and combined bending and axial load cases simply because the area of effective confined concrete in compression is reduced. The higher eccentricity causes smaller confined concrete region in compression yielding smaller increase in strength and ductility of concrete. Accordingly, the ultimate confined strength is gradually reduced from the fully confined value f[subscript]c[subscript]c (at zero eccentricity) to the unconfined value f[same as f1][subscript]c (at infinite eccentricity) as a function of the compression area to total area ratio. The higher the eccentricity the smaller the confined concrete compression zone. This paradigm is used to implement adaptive eccentric model utilizing the well known Mander Model and Lam and Teng Model. Generalization of the moment of area approach is utilized based on proportional loading, finite layer procedure and the secant stiffness approach, in an iterative incremental numerical model to achieve equilibrium points of P-[epsilon] and M-j response up to failure. This numerical analysis is adaptod to asses the confining effect in circular cross sectional columns confined with FRP and conventional lateral steel together; concrete filled steel tube (CFST) circular columns and rectangular columns confined with conventional lateral steel. This model is validated against experimental data found in literature. The comparison shows good correlation. Finally computer software is developed based on the non-linear numerical analysis. The software is equipped with an elegant graphics interface that assimilates input data, detail drawings, capacity diagrams and demand point mapping in a single sheet. Options for preliminary design, section and reinforcement selection are seamlessly integrated as well. The software generates 2D interaction diagrams for circular columns, 3D failure surface for rectangular columns and allows the user to determine the 2D interaction diagrams for any angle [alpha] between the x-axis and the resultant moment. Improvements to KDOT Bridge Design Manual using this software with reference to AASHTO LRFD are made. This study is limited to stub columns.

Book excerpt: A series of compression tests are conducted on 3 in. by 6 in. cylindrical specimens using a modified testing method that give the complete stress-strain behavior for both plain and fibrous high strength concretes with or without tie confinements. The volume fractions of fiber in the concrete are 0%, 0.5%, 0.75%, and 1.0%, respectively. Empirical equations are proposed herein to represent the complete stress-strain relationships of high strength and high strength fibrous concretes with compressive strength exceeding 10,000 psi. Various parameters are studied and their relationships are experimentally determined. The comparison between the experimental and analytical results shows to have good agreement. The proposed empirical stress-strain equations for high strength and high strength steel fiber concretes are used as material properties to modify the existing computer program of biaxially loaded slender reinforced concrete columns. This computer program evaluates the complete biaxial load-deflection and moment-curvature relationships of slender columns from zero load until failure. A total of nine high strength and five high strength steel fiber slender reinforced concrete columns are tested to compare their experimental load-deformation results with the analytical values derived from the present theoretical studies. A satisfactory agreement is attained for both ascending and descending branches of the load-deformation curves.
