This book was released on 2000-08-31 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph consists of two volumes and provides a unified, comprehensive presentation of the important topics pertaining to the understanding and determination of the mechanical behaviour of engineering materials under different regimes of loading. The large subject area is separated into eighteen chapters and four appendices, all self-contained, which give a complete picture and allow a thorough understanding of the current status and future direction of individual topics. Volume I contains eight chapters and three appendices, and concerns itself with the basic concepts pertaining to the entire monograph, together with the response behaviour of engineering materials under static and quasi-static loading. Thus, Volume I is dedicated to the introduction, the basic concepts and principles of the mechanical response of engineering materials, together with the relevant analysis of elastic, elastic-plastic, and viscoelastic behaviour. Volume II consists of ten chapters and one appendix, and concerns itself with the mechanical behaviour of various classes of materials under dynamic loading, together with the effects of local and microstructural phenomena on the response behaviour of the material. Volume II also contains selected topics concerning intelligent material systems, and pattern recognition and classification methodology for the characterization of material response states. The monograph contains a large number of illustrations, numerical examples and solved problems. The majority of chapters also contain a large number of review problems to challenge the reader. The monograph can be used as a textbook in science and engineering, for third and fourth undergraduate levels, as well as for the graduate levels. It is also a definitive reference work for scientists and engineers involved in the production, processing and applications of engineering materials, as well as for other professionals who are involved in the engineering design process.

Book excerpt: An adequate physical and mathematical description of material be havior is basic to all engineering applications. Fortunately, many prob lems may be treated entirely within the framework of elastic material response. While even these problems may become yuite complex be cause of geometrical and loading conditions, the linearity, reversibility, and rate independence generally applicable to elastic material descrip tion certainly eases the task of the analyst. Today, however, we are in creasingly confronted with practical problems which involve material response which is inelastic, hysteretic and rate dependent combined with loading which is transient in nature. These problems include, for instance, structural response to moving or impulsive loads, all the areas of ballistics (internal, external and terminal), contact stresses under high speed bearings, high speed machining, rolling and other metal working processes, explosive and impact forming, shock attenuation structures, seismic wave propagation, and many others of equal im portance. As these problems were encountered, it became increasingly evident that we did not have at hand the physical or mathematical description of the behavior of materials necessary to produce realistic solutions. Thus, during the last ten years particularly, there has been considerable effort expended toward the generation of both experi mental data on the dynamic mechanical response of materials as well as the formulation of realistic constitutive theories. It was the purpose of the Symposium at which the articles in this book were presented to discuss and review recent developments in this field.

Book excerpt: Dynamic Failure of Materials and Structures discusses the topic of dynamic loadings and their effect on material and structural failure. Since dynamic loading problems are very difficult as compared to their static counterpart, very little information is currently available about dynamic behavior of materials and structures. Topics covered include the response of both metallic as well as polymeric composite materials to blast loading and shock loadings, impact loadings and failure of novel materials under more controlled dynamic loads. These include response of soft materials that are important in practical use but have very limited information available on their dynamic response. Dynamic fragmentation, which has re-emerged in recent years has also been included. Both experimental as well as numerical aspects of material and structural response to dynamic loads are discussed. Written by several key experts in the field, Dynamic Failure of Materials and Structures will appeal to graduate students and researchers studying dynamic loadings within mechanical and civil engineering, as well as in physics and materials science.

Book excerpt: This book presents the results of experimental and theoretical studies of the destruction of solids under impact, explosion, high pressures, and strain rates. The content identifies the basic laws of the destruction of bodies under dynamic loads. The results of numerical studies were obtained using numerical methods on the Lagrangian, Euler, and ALE approaches to the description of the motion of continuous media. Numerical methods and mathematical models have been tested by comparison with experimental data and well-known analytical solutions (for instance, Rankin–Hugoniot laws). Experimental studies were performed on unique ballistic installations with the registration of fast processes (high-speed shooting). The results are used as new tests to verify the developing modeling methods. The research objects were metal multilayer plates, functionally graded materials, advanced, smart, and natural materials, etc. The book is interesting to specialists in the field of mathematical modeling and experimental methods for studying fast processes under dynamic loading.
