Book excerpt: I've waited all these years, expecting some one or another would give a full and true account of it all; but little thinking it would ever come to be my task. For it's not in my way; but seeing how much has been said about other parts and other people's sufferings; while ours never so much as came in for a line of newspaper, I can't think it's fair; and as fairness is what I always did like, I set to, very much against my will; while, on account of my empty sleeve, the paper keeps slipping and sliding about, so that I can only hold it quiet by putting the lead inkstand on one corner, and my tobacco-jar on the other. You see, I'm not much at home at this sort of thing; and though, if you put a pipe and a glass of something before me, I could tell you all about it, taking my time, like, it seems that won't do. I said, "Why don't you write it down as I tell it, so as other people could read all about it?" But "No," he says; "I could do it in my fashion, but I want it to be in your simple unadorned style; so set to and do it."

Many of his novels were written with young adults in mind. His final book was his biography of a fellow writer for juveniles, George Alfred Henty. Fenn was largely self-educated, teaching himself French, German and Italian. After studying at Battersea Training College for Teachers (1851-1854), he became the master of a national school at Alford, Lincolnshire. He later became a printer, editor and publisher of some short-lived periodicals. Fenn's first story for boys, Hollowdell Grange, appeared in 1867. It was followed by a succession of other novels for juveniles and adults. He also wrote for the theatre and authored many historical fiction novels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Begumbagh" is an adventurous and traditionally substantial novel written through George Manville Fenn. Set in colonial India at some stage in the Indian Mutiny of 1857, the book tells the gripping story of a small organization of British officials and their households who find themselves besieged via rebellion forces inside the fictional town of Begumbagh. Fenn's narrative vividly portrays the harrowing and hard situations confronted through the British residents as they try to shield themselves in opposition to the relentless onslaught of the mutineers. The characters are drawn with depth, and their struggles monitor the human components of worry, braveness, and survival all through a time of intense conflict. As the siege intensifies, the book explores the private and collective trials of the people trapped inside Begumbagh. It also delves into the relationships and camaraderie that expand many of the characters, showcasing the energy of human bonds within the face of adversity. "Begumbagh" is remarkable for its historic accuracy and the way it captures the surroundings of the Indian Mutiny, providing readers with a detailed glimpse into the activities and situations of that tumultuous length in India's records. George Manville Fenn's writing in "Begumbagh" skillfully combines adventure, ancient fiction, and individual-pushed storytelling, making it an interesting and educational examine.

Book excerpt: Excerpt: ...if even now, after losing so many men, and with so many more half disabled, if the enemy had made a bold assault now, they would have won the place dearly, though win it they must. That did not seem their way, though they wanted the place for the sake of the great store of arms and ammunition it contained, but all the same they wanted to buy it cheap. I found Captain Dyer ready enough to listen to my plan, though he shook his head, and said it was desperate. But after a little thought, he said:

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Begumbagh a Tale of the Indian Mutiny, and Other Stories I daresay a good many of you know me - seen me often in Bond Street, at Facet's door - Facet's, you know, the great Jeweller, where I stand and open carriages, or take messages, or small parcels with no end of valuables in them, for I'm trusted. Smith, my name is, Isaac Smith; and I 'm that tallish, grisly fellow with the seam down one side of my face, my left sleeve looped up to my button, and not a speck to be seen on that commissionaire's uniform, upon whose breast I've got three medals. I was standing one day, waiting patiently for something to do, when a tallish gentleman came up, nodded as if he knew me well, and I saluted.
