Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People became colonists on newly opened frontier worlds for a wide variety of reasons. Most wanted a new beginning. Some wanted the adventure frontier worlds promised. A few wanted to escape their ugly problems on their home worlds. Potential colonists underwent a thorough background check, including a criminal investigation. They were also forced to pay hundreds of credits as an immigration fee. The Samuel Wiggins Immigration Adventure was different. The colonists were desperate to get away from their current situations. The vast majority of them had fought long, vicious wars before being evacuated from their home worlds. They were sequester in a prison camp on a gray world where its gray, silicon based indigenous life forms had a taste for carbon based life forms. Samuel Wiggins made them an offer that seemed like an answer to prayer. He would transport them to their new world, and provide all of the equipment and supplies they would need. He would also give each one 200 credits they could spend on anything they wanted. Excitement turned to depression early on in their flight to their new world. That was after they learned Samuel Wiggins was a drug lord, and his Immigration Adventure was nothing more that setting up a huge drug manufacturing operation. Worse, their new home world was classified code Blue, unsuitable for human colonization. Things turned downright scary after they arrived at the planet and an overwhelming number of starships attacked the starship transporting their spaceships. The starship jumped back into Hyper flight, flew across the galaxy and down a spiral arm. When the starship reappeared in normal space, it was out in the middle of a dark nowhere without any chance of flying back to civilization. Would the severely damaged starship be able to fly to a star system? Would they find a planet that they could colonize?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early in this volume, David Ehrenfeld describes what prophecy really is. Referring to the biblical prophets, he says they were not the "holy fortunetellers that the word prophet has come to signify....The business of prophecy is not simply foretelling the future; rather it is describing the present with exceptional truthfulness and accuracy." Once this is done, then it can be seen that broad aspects of the future have suddenly become apparent. The twentieth century is drawing to a chaotic close amidst portents of unprecedented change and upheaval. The unravelling of societies and civilizations and the destruction of nature march together--linked--a fact whose enormous significance is often lost. In Beginning Again, David Ehrenfeld has undertaken the difficult task of describing the present clearly enough to reveal the future. Out of his broad vision emerges a glimpse of a new millennium: a vision at once frightening and comforting, a scene of great devastation and great rebuilding. Ehrenfeld ranges far and wide to present a coherent vision of our relationship with Nature--its many aspects and implications--as our century opens into the next millennium. Whether he is writing about the problem of loyalty to organizations, rights versus obligations, our over-managed society, the vanishing of established knowledge, the failure of experts, the triumph of dandelions, Dr. Seuss, Edward Teller, or the future of farming, he is always concerned with the intricate interaction between technology and nature. As in his classic book, The Arrogance of Humanism, Ehrenfeld never loses sight of our fatal love affair with the fantasy of control. We now have no choice, he argues, but to transform the dream of control, of progress, from one of overweening hubris, love of consumption, and the idiot's goal of perpetual growth, to one based on "the inventive imitation of nature," with its honesty, beauty, resilience, and durability. Few American writers and even fewer scientists can describe these timeless, transcendent qualities of nature so well. In "Places," the opening chapter, David Ehrenfeld tells about nightly vigils he spent alone on the moonlit beach of Tortuguero, watching giant sea turtles emerging from the sea to lay their eggs in the black sand where they were born. "I could watch the perfect white spheres falling," he writes. "Falling as they have fallen for a hundred million years, with the same slow cadence, always shielded from the rain or stars by the same massive bulk with the beaked head and the same large, myopic eyes rimmed with crusts of sand washed out by tears. Minutes and hours, days and months dissolve into eons. I am on an Oligocene beach, an Eocene beach, a Cretaceous beach--the scene is the same. It is night, the turtles are coming back, always back; I hear a deep hiss of breath and catch a glint of wet shell as the continents slide and crash, the oceans form and grow."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to become and work as an artist today? What unique challenges do artists face in the twenty-first century, and what skills are required to overcome them? How might art become an expression of spiritual life? In addressing these and other questions, Deborah J. Haynes offers reflections that range from the practical to the deeply philosophical. She explores challenging ideas: impermanence, suffering, and the inevitability of death; the virtues of generosity, kindness, and compassion; and more abstract concepts such as negative capability, groundlessness, and wisdom. Individual chapters are framed by personal stories and images from the artist's work. Beginning Again: Reflections on Art as Spiritual Practice is a personal statement, born from the author's experience as an artist, writer, teacher, and Buddhist practitioner. Haynes writes for artists--and for all exploring the relationship of their creativity to the inner life. For Haynes, making and looking at art can be a form of meditation and prayer, a space for solitude, silence, and living in the present.

Book excerpt: "Mr. Bevard's relationship with the newspaper has been advantageous as his unique style and both the content and the quality of his writing appeals to many of our readers."-Bob Hendrickson, Columnist, & Publisher of the Maysville Ledger-Independent "The road led to a ramshackle tobacco barn on the ridge, then curved up one last little rise before leveling as a slash through thickets of ash and cedar. In his later years after developing a reflective nature, John would form a psychic bond with the unknown dead men who had built the barn and once hauled tobacco to it over the old dug road from fields long gone back to woods. He paused near the barn as day and night stood in perfect balance. In the years ahead, John would watch this interplay of light and darkness many times at the beginnings and endings of untold days. The delicate shades would become to him metaphoric of the forces that move the universe " This passage from John Shoots His First Gobbler typifies Sam Bevard's approach to the outdoor experience in this eclectic collection of stories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: F.W. Watt published It’s Over It’s Beginning in 1986 (The Porcupine’s Quill, Inc.). More than fifty poems were included, capturing what seemed like a whole lifetime of personal experience, in contrasting country and city worlds, poems about gains and losses, successes and failures, living and dying, sorrows and celebrations. Not all the journeys, meditations and discoveries he thought at the time worthy of recording were included in this first collection. As well, there were more years still to live, more poems to be written. It was happening — again: the need to put down in words the moments that cry out to be understood, preserved and shared. Over thirty more poems about loving and losing, about sex, about trees, dogs, cats, horses, about that best kept secret of old age — that the wanting outlives the having. More laughing poems. Death-row joking while doing time in the inescapable prison called “the golden years” by people who aren’t there yet. Together with those previously published poems, they make up this new book called It’s Over It’s Beginning Again.

Book excerpt: Appalachia has been a place of movement and migration—for individuals, families, and entire communities—for centuries. Beginning Again brings together twelve narratives of refugees, migrants, and generations-long residents that explore complex journeys of resettlement. In their stories, Appalachia—despite how it’s popularly portrayed—is not simply a region of poverty and strife populated only by white people. It is a diverse place where belonging and connection are created despite displacement, resource extraction, and inequality. Among the narratives included: Hear from Claudine Katete, a Rwandan asylum seeker raised in refugee camps who graduated college into the chaos of COVID-19. Follow Amal as she and her family fled war-ravaged Syria and navigated mice-infested housing and unresponsive case workers. Listen to Mekyah Davis, born and raised in Big Stone Gap, as he describes the “slow burn” of everyday racism and his efforts to organize Black Appalachian youth to stay in their communities. Taken together, their stories and more collected here present a nuanced look at life in contemporary Appalachia.

Book excerpt: Beginning Again is a sequel to Escape: Adventures of a Loyalist Family, Mary Beacock Fryer's historical novel for ten to fourteen-year-olds. This new work chronicles the lives of the Seamans as they make a new start in Canada. The main theme is the building, by Caleb, the father, and his sons Cade, Sam and Ned, of a huge timber raft. Along the way they have many other adventures - a brush with the supernatural, a visit by a wealthy uncle, a return to the family home on Long Island by Ned and his mother, Martha. The climax is the raft journey to Quebec by Caleb, with Cade, Sam, Ned and Elizabeth as crew, and the sale of their logs. While on a shopping spree in Montreal, Elizabeth is the belle at a ball. The Seamans also get the better of an enemy, to Ned's satisfaction - and that of the many readers of the first Seaman family novel. Even those who have not read Escape will be delighted with this exciting adventure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A practical and spiritual guide to find God during times of health crisis or chronic disease. In 1995 Mary Earle was hospitalized with acute pancreatitis. When she was able to return home, she still faced a long recovery. She had to stay in bed most of the time, and eating was difficult some days. The busy life she had always known was gone, and she had to begin again. Like others who suffer from serious or chronic conditions, Mary Earle found that living with illness can require major adjustments in life. Using St. Benedict's ancient Rule--his way of ordering the life and days of religious communities--Beginning Again teaches readers how to discern a rule of life that helps them with changes in resting and activity levels, with food restrictions, and requirements for medicine or medical treatment. The ancient Benedictine concepts of stability, obedience, and conversion can help anyone living with illness, even those who are dying. Beginning Again is a practical resource, written for those who know little about St. Benedict and his Rule of Life, with exercises to help readers discover how to live with God at the center of their lives and illnesses. It is useful for those living with illness, and for clergy, counselors, and spiritual directors who care for them.

Book excerpt: After a chance meeting in 1981, Lily Fialka confronts the defining time of her life: 1943–45 in Los Alamos, when her physicist husband, Peter, worked on the atomic bomb as part of the Manhattan Project—a time of isolation, hard work, temptation, and loneliness, yet exhilaration and triumph; when great breakthroughs were made, but lives felt narrow; when loyalty was paramount, but the need for secrecy created unbearable tension. At the same time, Lily and her friends are haunted by what is happening to Dietrich Bonhoeffer in the Resistance in Germany, and his story serves as a counterpoint to theirs. In a sweeping historical novel that cuts across continents and reveals a deep knowledge of the science of the making of the bomb, Beginning the World Again offers valuable insights into that fascinating time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As we get closer to the end of times aka last days, we observe more Christians embracing the trends and traps of this world rather than upholding Gods standards of a more excellent way (1 Corinthians 12:31). After teaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ for about forty years, it is evident to me that the spiritual fruit manifested through every believer begins at the root (formative years) of their spiritual foundation. If Christians have been taught to live life with one foot resting on Old Testament practices of the Law and legalism, and the other foot resting on the New Testament principles of grace and liberty, their lives will reflect frustration and ultimate confusion, because double-doctrine teaching neutralizes the effectiveness of the Word of God. Consequently, many Christians continue to struggle with surrendering to the plain, profound, and sound truth that Salvation is based on faith in Jesus Christ (Romans 10:9), alone. It is not earned through academic or theological education, social status, good behavior, penance, or ones financial portfolio! Thus, it is the responsibility of every Gospel Leader to mentor, model, preach and teach the gospel of Jesus Christ without compromise, diminish or downplay the role of the Holy Spirit, nor attempting to dilute Gods pure, potent, powerful and soul-saving Word through personal interpretation! This book is written to encourage new Christians of the importance in remaining faithful to God throughout their life, as well as inspire those who have become frustrated, living a double-minded lifestyle to re-launch their journey in Christ with a renewed mindset, understanding that the Saints are called to standup and standout for the cause of Christ, against all odds!

Book excerpt: Rhett Massey as an administrative professional has managed the offices and provided confidential support to chief executive officers, presidents, and other senior-level executives at hospitals, hospices, social services agencies, and the federal government who saw it as their mission to ameliorate the suffering of those who sought their services. Believing that we have been called to the 'ministry of helps, ' Massey allows the Lord to use his hands in very unique and different ways to brighten the corner in which he lives. He adds this book, To Live Again, A New Beginning to his literary accomplishments. Massey is the writer, producer, and director of a well-received and much-talked about play: If God Is Dead, which touched the hearts and minds of those who attended the performance and caused some to commit and others to recommit their lives to the Lord. In addition, he allowed the Lord to use him while in undergraduate school to create and develop a monthly newsletter, The Watsonite, and served as its editor-in-chief. The mission of the newsletter was to keep students who graduated and moved away abreast of the happenings at the church as well as the membership in general. Since being struck by a debilitating illness that has left him disabled and unable to perform the duties of his profession, Massey continues to believe that God yet has work for him to do and is conscientiously intent on 'occupying until He comes.' To Live Again, A New Beginning is the latest creative endeavor by Massey; but chances are will not be his last.
