The same is true of the comparative completeness with which the principles of syntax are treated. In fact a place was found for some points of construction that were not taken up in the earlier book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Initia Latina: A Latin Book for Beginners This book is in tended to supply the needful grammar, translation, and exercises for a boy beginning Latin, either at home or at a preparatory school. It covers the same ground and employs the same vocabulary as the first 26 exercises of the writer's Exercises in Latin. Prose, and is designed to meet the wishes of some teachers who have felt that this earliest stage requires fuller treatment. It is assumed that the beginner will have first learnt to tell the parts of Speech in his own language, and the book deals with the Latin Simple Sentence and with Accidence to the end of the Regular Verbs. A suitable portion of grammar is printed with each lesson, and the whole of the Accidence used is summarised in clear print on a few pages at the end of the book. The special vocabularies given in the lessons are intended to be learnt, and the exercises to be written without further help. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beginning Latin: An Introduction, by Way of English, to the Latin Language Why American Boys and Girls Should Study Latin. The study of Latin is an intensive study of English. Besides its impor tance for a mastery of French, Spanish, and Italian, the study of Latin fosters habits of persistence, thoroughness, and accuracy; it cultivates the power to understand the thoughts of others and to express one's own. Translating is labors tory work in literature, admirable exercise in expression, ih suring steadily increasing power in the use of a varied and rich vocabulary as the great authors, Caesar, Cicero, and Vergil, are successively read. This Book Emphasizes the Relation of Latin to English. The value most nearly at hand in studying Latin and the most practical of all reasons for its study is the help given by Latin in understanding and using the English language. This book, therefore, lays special emphasis upon the relation of Latin to English. Related English words, with the Latin element typo graphically emphasized, are placed in the vocabularies, beside the Latin. Thus familiar and unfamiliar English words are illuminated by the Latin. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beginning Latin In the translation exercises, english-latin sentences have been unhesitatingly and freely introduced from the first. Here, as elsewhere, experience has been the guide, but a word of explanation may not be amiss. In the first place, the assumption that english-latin exercises are inherently more difficult than latin-english would seem to involve a fallacy. An english-latin exercise which is primarily an exercise on the practical use of forms, and which does not contain difficult and complicated syntax, presents to the pupil the same problems as a latin-english exercise - the problem of terminations. But it has, for the young pupil, a distinct advantage over the latin-english exercise - it is an exercise to be written and written work for the study hour secures the best concentration and the surest results. Following the Lessons intended to be assigned for prep aration are supplementary Exercises for Class Drill. These involve the same principles and vocabulary as the Les sons which correspond to them in number. While it is not intended that their preparation should be required in advance, those members of a class Whose study time permits may well look them over, and test their preparation by means of the questions which are in many cases appended. Here the ratio of Latin to English exercises is much increased, in order that in his translation work the pupil may benefit by the teacher's instant correction of bad English and his suggestions regarding methods of attacking the Latin. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Latin Latin seem alive; to give the first year study a value for gen eral culture; to minimize the difficulties of beginning Latin; to prepare thoroughly for the second year work. To carry further the first two aims of the book, the number of illustrations has been nearly doubled, and a description in English is attached to each. These descriptions taken together give a general idea of the life and customs of the Romans. To minimize the difficulties of beginning Latin, the early lessons have been divided and made shorter, so that the ap proach to the subject is much more gradual in the new edition than in the old. The first ten lessons of the former edition make twenty in the new book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Latin Reader With the Primer previously published, this Reader pro vides for a course of study leading up to Caesar or some other author of like difficulty. Students who are to give five years or more to preparatory Latin would normally devote a year each to the Primer and the Reader; but the maturer pupils in the four-year course will cover easily in their first year the work outlined in both books. It is hoped too, that, aside from use in this regular sequence, the Reader will be found to meet the needs of many teachers who are looking for a carefully graded text for supplementary reading or for translation at sight. The plan for beginning Latin embodied in Primer and Reader differs from others most fundamentally, per haps, in that it concentrates so definitely upon the problem of developing the student's power to read Latin; and it is quite in harmony with that general design that this second book is called a Reader, and that in it the latin-english exercises are massed at one point, with notes at the foot of the page.
