Book excerpt: Let’s be realistic here. Ordinary K-12 educators don’t know what "cybersecurity" is and could probably care less about incorporating it into their lesson plans. Yet, teaching cybersecurity is a critical national priority. So, this book aims to cut through the usual roadblocks of confusing technical jargon and industry stovepipes and give you, the classroom teacher, a unified understanding of what must be taught. That advice is based on a single authoritative definition of the field. In 2017, the three societies that write the standards for computing, software engineering, and information systems came together to define a single model of the field of cybersecurity. It is based on eight building blocks. That definition is presented here. However, we also understand that secondary school teachers are not experts in arcane subjects like software, component, human, or societal security. Therefore, this book explains cybersecurity through a simple story rather than diving into execution details. Tom, a high school teacher, and Lucy, a middle school teacher, are tasked by their district to develop a cybersecurity course for students in their respective schools. They are aided in this by "the Doc," an odd fellow but an expert in the field. Together they work their way through the content of each topic area, helping each other to understand what the student at each level in the educational process has to learn. The explanations are simple, easy to understand, and geared toward the teaching aspect rather than the actual performance of cybersecurity work. Each chapter is a self-contained explanation of the cybersecurity content in that area geared to teaching both middle and high school audiences. The eight component areas are standalone in that they can be taught separately. But the real value lies in the comprehensive but easy-to-understand picture that the reader will get of a complicated field.

Book excerpt: "Most survey results agree that there is a current and ongoing shortage of skilled cybersecurity workers that places our privacy, infrastructure, and nation at risk. Estimates for the global Cybersecurity Workforce Gap range from 2.72 million (ISC2, 2021) to 3.5 million (Cyber Academy, 2021) for 2021 and the United States estimates range from 465,000 (Brooks, 2021) to over 769,000 (Cyber Seek, 2022) open jobs as of November 2022. The most optimistic estimates still demonstrate a critical issue. As cybersecurity threats continue to grow in sophistication, scope, and scale, the ability to secure the United States from these threats lies in the ability to develop cybersecurity professionals with the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to accomplish the tasks associated with their cyber roles. The ability to supply qualified cybersecurity professionals is outpaced by the growing demand as previously outlined. This study proposes that conducting a case study of existing cybersecurity programs at secondary education institutions can identify the critical elements of these programs. These elements can be codified into program profiles and further refined into a comprehensive cybersecurity education framework for secondary education institutions. This framework can be used by school districts throughout Arizona to develop cybersecurity programs and ultimately develop qualified and competent cybersecurity professionals to overcome the cybersecurity workforce gap." --Abstract (leaf iv)

Book excerpt: This book collects state-of-the-art curriculum development considerations, training methods, techniques, and best practices, as well as cybersecurity lab requirements and aspects to take into account when setting up new labs, all based on hands-on experience in teaching cybersecurity in higher education. In parallel with the increasing number and impact of cyberattacks, there is a growing demand for cybersecurity courses in higher education. More and more educational institutions offer cybersecurity courses, which come with unique and constantly evolving challenges not known in other disciplines. For example, step-by-step guides may not work for some of the students if the configuration of a computing environment is not identical or similar enough to the one the workshop material is based on, which can be a huge problem for blended and online delivery modes. Using nested virtualization in a cloud infrastructure might not be authentic for all kinds of exercises, because some of its characteristics can be vastly different from an enterprise network environment that would be the most important to demonstrate to students. The availability of cybersecurity datasets for training and educational purposes can be limited, and the publicly available datasets might not suit a large share of training materials, because they are often excessively documented, but not only by authoritative websites, which render these inappropriate for assignments and can be misleading for online students following training workshops and looking for online resources about datasets such as the Boss of the SOC (BOTS) datasets. The constant changes of Kali Linux make it necessary to regularly update training materials, because commands might not run the same way they did a couple of months ago. The many challenges of cybersecurity education are further complicated by the continuous evolution of networking and cloud computing, hardware and software, which shapes student expectations: what is acceptable and respected today might be obsolete or even laughable tomorrow.
