Book excerpt: In 1993 won de Leidse beeldhouwer Frans de Wit (1942 - 2004) de Betonprijs van de Nederlandse Betonvereniging. Doorgaans wordt deze tweejaarlijkse prijs voor een bijzondere toepassing van beton uitgereikt aan ingenieurs, dat wil zeggen architecten en technici, of aan bedrijven. In die zin was De Wit als kunstenaar een geval apart. De Wit werd bekroond voor zijn Klimwand en Schijf in grofpuinheuvel in recreatiegebied Spaarnwoude, gelegen tussen Amsterdam, Haarlem en Velsen. De weliswaar kunstzinnig vormgegeven klimwand heeft in de eerste plaats een praktische functie als object voor sportieve vrijetijdsbesteding, de Schijf in grofpuinheuvel is daarentegen bovenal een autonoom kunstobject. De Wit werkte vaker met beton, waarbij hij steeds zocht naar een samengaan van praktisch nut en autonome zeggingskracht. Zo maakte hij tussen 1983 en 1985 een betonnen Windscherm langs het Calandkanaal in Rotterdam en tussen 1994 en 1996 het betonnen Vierkant eiland in de plas, eveneens in Rotterdam, dat het laagste punt van Nederland symboliseert.
