Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bee-Keeping in War-Time If there are weak stocks in the spring, the same method can be followed to unite weak ones which would otherwise spend all the summer in gaining sufficient strength, and stores to winter on, instead of giving surplus. By uniting and making one strong lot out of each two weak ones, surplus will be obtained. The next care will be to see that all stocks are headed by young vigorous queens. Those having failing mothers should be te-queened by young ones, reared and introduced as ex plained in the chapter on Queen Rearing and Introduction. Book Synopsis Dadant System of Beekeeping (Classic Reprint) by : Camille Pierre Dadant
Download or read book Dadant System of Beekeeping (Classic Reprint) written by Camille Pierre Dadant and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dadant System of Beekeeping The worker bees hatch from the egg in 21 days, in ordinary circumstances. They do duty about the inside for a week, before attempting a flight outside. About the seventh day, in the after noon, they take their first flight, coming back home after having made the acquaintance of the surroundings, and remaining another week indoors. It is therefore only after 2 weeks of insect life, 5 weeks from the laying of the egg, that the worker becomes a field bee and begins to harvest honey. This is im portant to know, if we wish to get our force of honey harvesters at the right time. The worker does not live long in the busy season. Previous to the introduction of the Italian bee in apiaries of common bees, it was difficult, if not impossible to ascertain how long a worker lives. The introduction of Italian bees has helped solve this problem in a positive manner. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The photos show his sky scraper hives filled with fancy and No. 1 comb honey - hives that have cast no swarms, but have gone on storing honey in the supers uninterruptedly. Whether others will be able to do as well; whether they will find this system cheaper to apply than the ordinary methods of shaking swarms as described in our standard text-books, remains to be seen. Download or read book Bad Beekeeping written by Ron Miksha and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A million pounds of honey. Produced by a billion bees! This memoir reconstructs the life of a young man from Pennsylvania as he drops into the bald prairie badlands of southern Saskatchewan. He buys a honey ranch and keeps the bees that make the honey. But he also spends winters in Florida swamps, nurse-maid to ten thousand dainty queen bees. From the dusty Canadian prairie to the thick palmetto swamps of the American south, the reader meets with simple folks who shape the protagonist's character - including a Cree rancher with three sons playing NHL hockey, a Hutterite preacher who yearns to roam the globe, a reclusive bee-eating homesteader, and a grey-headed widow who grows grapefruit, plays a nasty game of scrabble, and lives with four vicious dogs. Encompassing a ten-year period, this true story evolves from the earnest inexperience of the young man as he learns an art and builds a business. Carefully researched natural biology runs counterpoint to human social activities. Bee craft serves as the setting for expositions that contrast American and Canadian lifestyles, while exemplifying the harsh reality of a man working with and against the physical environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bee-Keeping in Victoria Italian is the Golden Italian which was secured by select breeding for colour, or by crossing with Cyprians. It has five yellow bands instead of three - practically the whole of the abdomen is yellow. Bees of this variety are more susceptible to cold and wet than the three banded Italians and rather predisposed to bee-paralysis. Italians, when pure, do not cap their combs so white as black bees do, and are therefore less suitable for the production of comb honey. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bees Sir: I have the honor to transmit herewith a manuscript entitled "Bees," by E. F. Phillips, Ph. D., in charge of bee culture in this bureau. This paper will supersede Farmers' Bulletins 59 and 397, A few new illustrations which add greatly to the value of the paper and some minor alterations in the text are the only changes in this from Farmers Bulletin 397; but since it is not now the policy of the department to issue revised editions, it is recommended that this bulletin be issued under a new serial number. In the preparation of this paper the aim has been to give briefly such information as is needed by persons engaged in the keeping of bees, and to answer inquiries such as are frequently received from correspondents of the department. No attempt has been made to include discussions of bee anatomy, honey plants, or the more special manipulations sometimes practiced, such as queen rearing. The discussion of apparatus is necessarily brief. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Italian System of Bee Keeping Having been asked to edit the following notes during their original publication in the columns of the Field newspaper and their republication in the present form, I have had much pleasure in acceding to the request. The principle of the Giotto hive is not new, it being a slight modification of the leaf hive designed by Huber. Its merit lies in its simplicity and cheapness, and in the admirable manner in which it is capable of being worked with the inexpensive honey extractor or smielatore. Probably no other pursuit is calculated to bring one into intimate touch with nature at so many points as is beekeeping. To the gardener, the fruit-grower especially, bees are an absolute necessity.
